Chapter 83
Indebted to Pearl
"Olivia, be mindful of your words. You've caused Evans so much harm, what more do you want?" Kittie was angered by her words.
"Okay, then I'll just come out and say it,"Olivia said. "How did you resolve the two million dollars that you owed us last time? You said you didn't have any money last time and asked us to help figure it out together. Back then, Tom tried every day to come up with money and eventually resolved it all. You even claimed to have repaid the two million dollars and said we didn't need to worry."
Olivia thought, 'There's no way they could have repaid the two million dollars so smoothly. They must have taken money from their parents.'
"Evans, where did you get so much money? Is all of your parents' money in your hands? You've secretly kept the money!"Olivia asked directly.
She had always suspected this.
They must have taken their parents' money without telling them.
It was likely they took more than just that amount of money.
Evans coughed angrily and pointed atOlivia. "Do you have no conscience? How could you suspect me like this?"
He had helped their family so much, yet they doubted him.
Kittie hurriedly comforted Evans, "Don't get upset, your hand is still in a cast."
Seeing how agitated he was,Olivia realized she had gone too far and said, "Evans, I was just asking, no suspicion. Don't be angry."
This was a pain in Evans' heart.
It was no different from selling their daughter.
He had only made this one mistake in his lifetime, selling his daughter to protect the entire family.
He felt indebted to Pearl.
Listening to their argument for so long, Pearl had also come to understandOlivia's character.
She had never likedOlivia, too stingy and jealous of others.
But whenever she faced difficulties, she shamelessly sought help from others.
Kittie had mentioned before that Evans and Tom had a good relationship, but everything changed after Tom marriedOlivia.
Olivia often intentionally caused trouble and was easily angered. As a result, both families began to drift further apart.
Considering their family relationship, Evans tried not to dwell on his inner discomfort and continued engaging with Tom.
But they went even further beyond what he could tolerate.
Pearl had always thought that Evans owed money due to a failed business, but now she knew that a portion of that two million dollars belonged to their family.
She pushed open the door and entered.
Their arguing ceased as they all turned to look.
Olivia quickly wiped away her tears and greeted Pearl with a forced smile. "Pearl, you're here."
Pearl's face didn't look good as she walked over to Evans in the hospital bed and asked, "Dad, how are you doing?"
Evans didn't want her to worry too much and casually said, "It's just a minor fracture, it'll be fine in a while. I told your mom not to call you, but she insisted on calling. Aren't you supposed to be at work now? Don't worry about me. You should go to work quickly."
He didn't want to trouble Pearl.
"You're like this now, and you're still concerned about whether I work or not," Pearl said. "You're getting older, even if your fracture heals, you won't recover like before. You should take care of your health more and not make me worry!"
"I understand, I won't do it again," Evans reassured her, showing that he was still attentive to her concerns.
Olivia thought that Pearl had a good job and had heard others praise her, so she started asking, "Pearl, you've been working for several years, right? It seems like you work at a big company. Your younger sister is about to graduate from college, and she's seeking an internship. Would you consider recommending her?"
Pearl's cousin, Isabelle Wilson, also knew that Pearl's company had good working conditions.
She didn't care about these things before, but she was anxious about finding a job after college. It was only then that she learned that Pearl worked at a leading company in the city.
The prospect of interning there seemed ideal to Isabelle. Not only would it provide valuable experience, but it would also undoubtedly make her classmates envious.
She said, "Cousin Pearl, I will be interning in a month. Can I work at your company? Even if it's just doing odd jobs."
Pearl asked, "Which university did you graduate from?"
Isabelle replied, "A regular university."
"Our company only recruits graduates from prestigious schools. You still have a long way to go," Pearl promptly refused her without hesitation.
Embarrassed, Isabelle blushed but maintained a smile as she remarked, "Aren't you working at that company? With you there, it doesn't matter which school I go to."
Pearl replied coldly, "A good company follows the rules. If everyone likes to rely on connections to get in, the company will go bankrupt in a few years."
Isabelle was unhappy and said, "Cousin Pearl, you just don't want to help me, that's why you say this."
"It's good that you know. You rely on others for everything. If there's no one to help you, you're worse off than a beggar." Pearl's words were sharp.
"If you don't want to help me, then forget it, but you're still insulting me! Mom, look at her attitude!" Isabelle couldn't tolerate being insulted as her eyes reddened with anger.
Olivia couldn't bear to see Isabelle being treated unfairly and said, "Pearl, why do you speak to your sister like this? Why don't you show her any consideration? What's wrong with me asking you to help your sister a little? Your dad and uncle came here like this too. Family should love and support each other, don't think that just because you're grown up, you don't have to take care of anything."
Pearl responded calmly, "I do respect all of you, but you don't appreciate us either, and you've caused my dad to fall ill."
"You..."Olivia was at a loss for words. She continued to sob, saying, "Pearl, you just don't respect me. If you treat me like this, how can I go on living?"
Evans, not wanting to hear her cry, said, "Alright, stop talking about it. Let Tom solve his problems."
"No, Evans, if you don't help us, Tom will die!"Olivia exclaimed.
This time, Evans was very cold and didn't want to be influenced by her anymore.
Seeing his lack of response,Olivia cursed, "You have no conscience, you can't even help your own brother in a time of need. You must have secretly taken our parents' money all these years and pretended in front of us. If Tom is in danger, I will never forgive you in my lifetime!"
"Mom," Isabelle also started crying, "Please stop crying. You ask them for help, but they refuse. If you fall ill, what will I do?" They were causing a commotion in the hospital, airing their grievances.
Finally, Evans saw them for who they were: ingrates.
Angered, Kittie said bluntly, "I never thought after all these years this is how you view our family. Since you feel this way, so be it!"
"Look everyone, how cruel and unreasonable my sister-in-law is!"Olivia sat directly on the ground.
"That's enough, this is a hospital and not the street. If you want to cry, go home and cry." Pearl couldn't stand them anymore. She had seen them behave like this since they were young. They would not rest until they got what they wanted. This had also contributed to their reluctance to change.
Olivia, no longer concerned about her dignity, said, "This is my niece, showing such disrespect toward me. I'd rather die than be ignored, or even worse, marry into the Wilson family without respect." As she spoke, she appeared on the verge of hitting the wall in frustration.
Isabelle stopped her, crying out, "Mom, don't do this. Dad still needs you, don't leave me!"
Evans coughed uncontrollably, too angry to speak. With the door open, gossip about them echoed from both inside and outside. It was truly an opportunity for others to laugh at.
Just as things were chaotic inside, a tall figure stood at the doorway and asked in a deep voice, "What's going on here?"
