Chapter 323 Don't Make Him the Goal
Rachel was caught off guard by his questions. "I've heard my dad mention it. What's up?"
Adrian pressed, "Can Eldorians always make antidotes for their own poisons?"
Rachel found it odd but answered, "I don't know. My dad's Eldorian, so I'm half, but I'm not familiar with that side. Eldoria's a chaotic small country, split into high and low races."
She pointed to a person in the newspaper. "This guy looks like us but has dark skin. He's from the low race, very low status. My dad's from the high race."
Adrian didn't know much about these people. This small country was poor, backward, still under a monarchy, and he'd never been there. He wasn't familiar with their civilization either.
Adrian decided he wanted to see for himself. Maybe he'd find something useful.
Rachel warned him, "It's dangerous there. Eldorians have low education. Many tourists disappear, maybe even get eaten. You can't go; it's too risky!"
Eldorians only moved to developed places. Rachel worried when Adrian asked these questions. He wanted to go because Eldorians had ties with The Crimson Eclipse Society and were skilled in pharmaceuticals. This was the only place he could find the antidote.
Adrian even asked Jeffery, who had more experience. Jeffery said he'd never been there, only stayed at the border, and advised Adrian not to go. If he went, everything would be uncertain. In a civilized country, things made sense, but outside, the world was terrifying.
Oscar woke up with a splitting headache. He'd never felt this bad before.
"Oscar, you're awake," Elijah said, worried, by his side.
"Have some water," Nicholas offered, pouring a glass.
Oscar saw them looking concerned. He'd had a beautiful dream about Pearl.
"Why are you all here?" Oscar's voice was hoarse. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Oscar, you were hungover. We were worried," Elijah said. "You've been trying to help Ms. Harris. We've sent people to the border and should have news soon."
They tried to comfort Oscar. Seeing him like this, Nicholas and Elijah couldn't bear it, especially seeing him drunk. They worried about his health.
Nicholas and Elijah's words weighed on Oscar's mind. But he felt something was off about them.
Oscar asked, "What did you do behind my back yesterday?"
This stumped Nicholas and Elijah.
"How could we? We didn't do anything!" Elijah said quickly. "We only did things for your good."
"So you did do something," Oscar said coldly.
Nicholas and Elijah shivered.
Nicholas admitted, "When we were protecting Ms. Harris, we saw her having dinner with another man. We were afraid she'd fall for someone else, so we sabotaged it and got caught by Ms. Harris."
They both looked guilty as they spoke.
Oscar leaned against the bed, his face turning somber. "So yesterday wasn't a dream?"
"Ms. Harris did come," Elijah continued. "I thought she'd have another big fight with you, but you were drunk. She looked really sad when she left. It was hard to watch."
Oscar held his forehead, the pain making it hard to remember. He couldn't recall what happened last night. It felt too much like a dream. If Pearl had come, at least he could see her. He couldn't face her looking so disheveled anymore.
"You guys can leave now," Oscar said hoarsely.
"Yes!" Nicholas and Elijah walked out.
Less than ten minutes later, Elijah reported at the door, "Oscar, Ms. Garcia is here!"
Oscar quickly freshened up and changed. Hearing this, he frowned slightly, suppressing his displeasure. "Let her wait downstairs."
Haley was in a good mood. She had landed the lead role in the hottest TV series. This was her chance to become famous. As long as the show became popular, she'd have a firm foothold in the entertainment industry. She came specifically to tell Oscar the good news.
After waiting about twenty minutes, she finally saw Oscar coming down. She immediately went up to him, happily calling, "Oscar."
Oscar's eyes didn't focus on her. "What do you want?"
Ignoring his coldness, Haley took his arm. She knew Oscar wouldn't reject her.
"I got the lead role in 'Echoes of the Enchanted Realm'!" Haley's lips curled up. "Aren't I amazing? With this show, I'll definitely become a hit. Then I can stand by your side. Oscar, everything I do is to be able to stand by your side."
She wanted him to know that everything she did was for him.
Oscar, however, said, "Whatever you become, it's not for me."
Haley's face changed slightly. "You can't say that. Everything I've done was to be worthy of you!"
Oscar glanced at Haley. He wanted to tell her not to do things for him, but he knew she'd still have the same attitude no matter what he said. So he didn't want to say more.
No matter how much Haley talked, Oscar only responded with a few words. He had nothing more to say. He wasn't interested in her matters, and she wanted to share this joy because of him.
Oscar sat on the couch, playing with his phone, and saw the latest news. Eileen was starring in "Glory," a dark-themed modern drama. There weren't many comments below. Compared to Haley's show, it had much less buzz. He clearly saw Pearl's name, who was one of the investors. 'Was she now interested in being an investor?'
Haley, sitting next to him, noticed the news he was reading and couldn't help but smile. "I can't believe Pearl decided to invest in that show. The script is by a rookie director and is quite immature. There's a high risk of failure, and despite being in the news for several days, it hasn't generated any buzz."
She didn't understand why Pearl would take such a risky step. She thought, ‘Even investing in just any random script would be better than this. Eileen even starred in it, and it was like asking for trouble.'
This time, she was sure to make a successful comeback.
Oscar remained silent, but he would support everything Pearl did.
"Let's go. The director is waiting for us. Let's have a meal together. I'll be joining the crew soon," Haley said. "By the way, it seems their crew and ours are in the same location. We might see each other often."
