Chapter 135: Behave Yourself
Oscar's eyes flashed with a hint of coldness. "Where did you find her?"
Pearl had found someone so quickly. He knew the next step would be for her to leave him.
Pearl had arranged everything behind his back!
Pearl thought she had offended him in some way, but she didn't expect this.
Pearl pushed him away. "It was a normal recruitment process, Mr. Brown. Don't you appreciate her?"
"If you don't want to work, I'll allow you to resign. You can just stay at home and be my wife," Oscar's said..
With a slight push from his hand, Pearl was forced to look up. At that moment, their eyes met.
Pearl frowned. "Why? Do you really think I'd be fine with not working and just being a housewife? Have you forgotten what you said when we got married? You said I needed to know my place, don't do anything out of line, and after three years, we will get a divorce! Why are you so unwilling to go through with it?"
"Shut up!" Oscar gritted his teeth, trying to hang on to his dwindling patience.
He didn't want to hear the word "divorce" again.
Pearl didn't bother to argue with him, she just did what she had to do. "Alright, Mr. Brown, I have work to do. If there's nothing else, I'll go back to my desk. Also, I haven't been feeling well lately, so if there are any events to attend, you can ask Sarah to go."
Pearl needed to create some distance from him now.
By keeping their interactions minimal, conflicts would be reduced. Once Oscar got used to this setup, he wouldn't see her departure as a problem.
Oscar didn't let Pearl go. A cold smile appeared on his lips. "Should I thank you for arranging everything so well for me?"
Pearl didn't want to argue with him and said, "Mr. Brown, I'm your secretary, it's all part of the job."
"Do you really think I'd bring a newcomer who could potentially embarrass me?" Oscar's brows furrowed, clearly displeased.
Following his lead, Pearl said, "Then I'll take her over to get familiar with the scene. Just tell me, how much time will you give me?"
Oscar replied coldly, "It's not about how much time I need, it's about how much time this person you brought needs to get used to the job."
"Got it."
Pearl responded calmly with a quiet demeanor, no longer causing a scene.
"Get out!"
Oscar released Pearl and turned his back to her.
He was afraid that if he looked at Pearl for a moment longer, he might strangle her.
"Alright," Pearl replied and went outside.
After seeing Pearl come out, Sarah brought two documents to Pearl and quickly understood the situation.
The Hall Group banquet was held at a seven-star hotel in the city.
Guests were dressed in elegant attire, toasting each other and mingling under the shimmering stars.
Oscar was accompanied by Pearl, Harold, and the newcomer Sarah.
As Oscar's trusted assistants, Pearl and Harold were well-known in the circle. Upon seeing Sarah, a new face, some people whispered privately,
"Mr. Brown doesn't usually interact much with the opposite sex. Now that he's brought in another person, he must be grooming a newcomer. Does that mean Pearl is resigning?"
"She has been by Mr. Brown's side for a long time. Could it be that she's Mr. Brown's secret lover and got pregnant?"
"If that's the case, Pearl is truly inspiring. She's quickly moving up the ranks! Between a secretary and a wife, of course, the latter is better. Pearl can secure a wealthy life with a child! Even if they separate, she won't lose out!"
"It might not be as good as you think. Is it possible that Pearl has offended Mr. Brown and is being kicked out? In wealthy families, they always focus on newcomers and ignore the old ones!"
"That makes sense. But with Pearl's face and figure, she's truly a beauty!"
Pearl was unaware that she was being watched.
Following Oscar's instructions, she tried her best to coach Sarah, the newcomer.
Sarah, aware that Pearl wasn't feeling well that day, even helped out by handling the drinks.
Sarah had a good tolerance for alcohol and behaved appropriately.
Since Pearl didn't drink, Sarah could effectively share the workload with Oscar on her behalf.
Sarah was able to address the issues raised by the partners and even earned their admiration, boosting Oscar's image.
"Mr. Brown, where did you find such another gem of a secretary?"
"Mr. Peterson, everything I am is the result of excellent mentors," Sarah said effortlessly.
Sarah's implication was that her excellent abilities were a result of the training provided by Pearl and Oscar, while also encouraging the partner, Andrew Peterson, implying that he could also nurture talent if he wished.
This statement shed a positive light on several individuals.
Pearl had to admit that Sarah was excellent, and she felt it wouldn't be long before Sarah gained Oscar's full approval.
Things were looking up.
Even if Pearl resigned, there were others around Oscar to help with the workload.
Mr. Peterson chuckled, saying, "Mr. Brown, times are changing, the new generation may indeed surpass the old."
In front of Pearl, Mr. Peterson praised Sarah, and while Pearl didn't react much, Oscar subconsciously glanced at her. She remained silent.
Sarah happily engaged in discussions with Andrew about collaborations.
Feeling a bit tired from standing, Pearl realized she wasn't needed and decided to approach Mae Robinson's table. Unexpectedly, someone approached her with a glass of champagne in hand.
"Pearl."
The man across from her was dressed in a silver-gray business suit and wore black-framed glasses.
"Mr. Sullivan."
Pearl nodded at him in acknowledgement.
Pearl had a neutral impression of Ryan Sullivan, who was in the construction industry. Previously, Oscar had a piece of land for a government project and conducted an open tender with several partners, including Ryan.
Out of politeness, Pearl smiled. "Mr. Sullivan, if you have a project to discuss with Mr. Brown today, he's over there with his team. Feel free to talk to him."
Pearl thought she could leave after saying this, but Ryan stood in her way and blocked her path. "Pearl, I'm not here to see Mr. Brown, I'm here to see you."
"Me?" Pearl was puzzled. "Mr. Sullivan, I'm about to resign soon. There's no point in talking to me. The Brown Group has strict rules for its employees, I can't collaborate with you in private."
Before Pearl could finish speaking, Ryan interrupted her and even reached out to grab her hand. "Pearl, I'm not here to discuss collaboration. I've heard what those people said, and you mentioned resigning. Why not come work for me?"
Pearl quickly pulled away. "Mr. Sullivan, you seem to be mistaken. Please don't do this!"
"Mistaken? Pearl, I'm very clear-headed right now. Once you resign from the Brown Group, with your background and experience, no one would dare hire you, but I'm different. If you want, I can help you!" Ryan's eyes were filled with greed.
Pearl tried to avoid him, but Ryan blocked her path.
Just when Pearl thought she couldn't escape…
