Chapter 713 Threat

Pearl was about to set down the kitchen knife and head out when Oscar stopped her. "I'll get it."

"It's in my backpack. Just unzip it, and you'll see it," Pearl said, not thinking twice about it.

Oscar left the kitchen and, with Christopher scampering along beside him with the boundless energy of youth, headed to the entryway. "Christopher, want to tell Dad about the singing competition?"

"Sure! Mom was amazing today. Everyone was clapping for her," Christopher said excitedly, sharing all the details.

His mom was not only the prettiest but also super kind. Unlike his friends, who often got scolded, he had never been scolded even once.

Oscar smiled at that. He unzipped the bag and quickly found two red flowers. He handed the flowers to Christopher and casually placed the bag on the rack. As he turned to walk back, Christopher accidentally stepped on a shoe and almost fell.

Oscar quickly caught him, but in the process, he knocked over Pearl's bag, spilling its contents all over the floor.

Hearing the noise, Calliope came over and picked up Christopher. Oscar bent down to gather the scattered items and soon noticed a note lying next to a lipstick.

He didn't mean to invade Pearl's privacy, but the note was already out in the open. As he picked it up, he saw the words written on it. With just one glance, Oscar's face turned serious.

The note was filled with threatening words, signed by some mysterious organization, which was a direct threat!

He needed to find out who was behind this to protect Pearl and the kids.

"Dinner's ready, come and eat," Pearl called out, bringing the dishes to the table.

Christopher ran over happily and, after sitting down, called out to Oscar, "Dad, come and eat!"

"I'm coming," Oscar replied, calmly putting the note away and picking up the scattered items before heading to the dining table.

During dinner, he didn't mention the note at all. He didn't want to ruin the family's mood. As the man of the house, he felt it was his job to handle these things on his own.

Meanwhile, over at Desiree's place.

Since that night, she had locked herself in her downtown apartment, spending most of her time in a daze, only eating when she was really hungry.

She hadn't contacted anyone, except for replying to a few messages from Liam and Tessa. Other than that, she had no communication with anyone.

Until Daryl came knocking.

Desiree least wanted to see him now, so she refused to open the door, pretending not to hear.

But Daryl had checked the surveillance beforehand and knew she hadn't left the apartment for days. So he kept knocking.

The knocking was like a haunting spell, driving Desiree crazy, and even disturbing the neighbors, who came out to scold Daryl. "Are you nuts? A few knocks are enough. You've been at it for almost twenty minutes. If no one's opening the door, it means no one's home. Are you out of your mind?"

"No, someone's definitely home," Daryl insisted, standing his ground. His stubbornness only made the neighbor angrier.

The neighbor's scolding got harsher, "If someone's home but not opening the door, it means they don't want to see you. Can't you call or text? Why do you have to keep knocking? There are neighbors on both sides, not just you!"

Seeing the argument outside getting heated, Desiree had no choice but to give in. She didn't care how long Daryl waited at the door, but she couldn't ignore the neighbors' feelings.

So she quickly opened the door, apologizing to the neighbor, "I'm sorry, I was sleeping too deeply and didn't hear it. I'm really sorry for disturbing your rest."

"Got it, you two can argue inside. Don't let everyone hear about it," the neighbor said, still annoyed but softened by Desiree's sincere apology.

After the neighbor left, Desiree tried to close the door, but Daryl quickly blocked it.

He pleaded, "Let me in. Let's talk inside. If we stay at the door, someone else will come and accuse us of disturbing the peace."

"Your behavior just now was indeed disturbing the peace. Don't blame them for accusing you," Desiree said, pulling the door handle.

Daryl increased his strength as well, and they were at a stalemate. As time passed, Desiree suddenly let go and turned to walk inside, feeling it was all pointless.

"Desiree, you agreed to let me in." Daryl hurriedly followed.

Once inside, he closed the door and walked over to Desiree, starting his usual spiel. The main point was that since they had been intimate, they should get married.

"Daryl, after you brought me back that day, I thought a lot about our relationship. I've made up my mind," Desiree said, looking at him.

In his eyes, she saw determination and possessiveness, but no love or cherishing. Moreover, his relentless pursuit over the past few days had brought her a lot of trouble.

Daryl eagerly asked, "What did you decide? I think the beginning of next month is a good time. We can get the marriage certificate first and then have a wedding. I'll give you a grand wedding."

"But I don't think we're suitable for each other, not even as friends," Desiree said, and Daryl's face turned pale, as he couldn't believe his ears.

After all these days of consideration, shouldn't she let him take responsibility?

Why was she reacting this way?

If they couldn't even be friends, he had no right to be around her, which meant she wanted to completely cut ties.

"No, you can't do this to me." Daryl grabbed her hand. "If there's something I'm not doing well, just tell me, and I'll change. But you can't just decide not to be with me. It's not fair for me!"

"Daryl, there's no fairness in matters of the heart. I know you like me, but no law says that because you like me, I have to reciprocate," Desiree corrected him.

If he truly loved her, he would respect her decision, not just focus on possessing her.
