Chapter 391 She Feels Uneasy
Pearl heard heavy breathing, then Adrian's voice. "I should be close, but I don't know what'll happen next. I can't take my phone; no one can. If I'm caught, it'll be a disaster. So, if you find this phone, call someone in my contacts and let them know I'm alive. I'm doing this for her and everyone who's been hurt. Thanks!"
That was the end of the message.
'He'll be safe!'
Pearl gripped the phone, trying to convince herself everything would be okay.
She thanked Joshua and hung up, but still felt uneasy.
'Adrian had no idea what was in The Crimson Eclipse Society. If he went in, could he get out? How would I explain this to his parents?'
Pearl wanted to go immediately, but she was in the hospital and hadn't learned self-defense yet. Going there would only make things worse.
Late at night, Oscar came to see Pearl.
He chose a time when she was sound asleep.
He moved quietly, just to check on her.
The curtains were open, and a sliver of moonlight highlighted Pearl's skin.
Oscar stood by the bed, his eyes fixed on her, filled with longing. He stood there for a long time, just watching.
After a while, he reached out to touch her face.
The moment he touched her, Pearl grabbed his hand and opened her eyes.
Oscar was surprised; she wasn't asleep.
"Why are you here at this time?" Pearl asked. "Why have you been standing there so long?"
"I thought you were asleep and didn't want to wake you," Oscar said softly.
Pearl held his hand tightly. "I got a call from Adrian today, but it was a recording. He said he was going to The Crimson Eclipse Society. It's been so long without any news. Could he be in danger?"
She needed someone to tell her Adrian was safe.
Oscar asked, "Can't sleep because you're worried about him?"
Pearl was anxious. "When I close my eyes, I imagine him covered in blood. I can't sleep at all."
Oscar frowned and touched her cold cheek. "Don't be too tense. No news might be good news."
"That's the only thing giving me a bit of hope." But it wasn't enough for her.
She looked at Oscar, helpless. "Do you have any ideas?"
Oscar said, "I've sent people over. I'll let you know if there's any news. Now you should get some sleep."
"You sent people." Pearl tried to reassure herself. "But haven't they found The Crimson Eclipse Society yet? Could there be an undercover agent who can't be revealed to me? Can you find Adrian? I'm really worried. He probably hasn't suffered like this before."
"I know," Oscar said. "You're too tense. Adrian will be fine."
Pearl knew she was too tense, but she couldn't help it.
Adrian was like family to her. If something happened to him, she'd be devastated.
Oscar said again, "Go to sleep."
Pearl grabbed Oscar's sleeve. "Do you have anything else to do? Can you hold me?"
Oscar hesitated, looking at her.
Pearl sensed it and said softly, "I don't know what to do now. I want someone to be with me. Being alone is too lonely. I can't see the baby. I'm really worried."
She was full of expectations, hoping and waiting, but the outcome was uncertain and unknown to her.
She felt lost and needed strength. She wanted Oscar to give her that courage.
Oscar felt her helplessness and softened. He lay beside her, letting her rest in his arms. "Adrian's a good guy."
Pearl felt a bit more at ease. "Of course, he is."
"I also hope someone can be with you," Oscar said softly.
Pearl stiffened and looked up at him. "What do you mean?"
Oscar gently patted her back. "I'm just trying to help you sleep."
Pearl said, "Is this how you lull someone to sleep? You weren't like this before. You've changed recently. You've become distant."
Her words hit Oscar hard, making him unsure whether to distance himself or get closer.
He held her tighter. "I'm afraid you'll be unhappy and hate me."
Pearl realized she had lost many people. Even though they were still around, she felt like no one was by her side.
Putting aside those unhappy thoughts, she really didn't want to lose anyone else.
She hugged Oscar's waist. "What should I do? Am I sick again? I feel something's wrong. Everything is gone, and nothing is by my side."
The baby wasn't with her, Adrian wasn't there, and even Jeffery wasn't around. She felt as if Oscar would leave her too, which made her very uneasy.
Oscar clenched his fist, turned his body, and held her in his arms, his chin resting on her head. "I'm still here. I'll always be here. No matter where I am, my heart will never leave you."
"Really?" Pearl was unsure. She realized Oscar might not always tell the truth.
Oscar told her, "I never intended to lie to you. I just want you to live well."
Pearl buried herself in his arms, almost crying. "When I woke up, I felt strange. I didn't die. Is it God's mercy? I just don't know how long I can live. Will I see the baby again, Oscar?"
"You will see him," Oscar answered firmly. "You will."
"That's great," Pearl said, both crying and laughing. "I just hope everyone I care about is safe and sound."
Time passed slowly. Pearl stayed awake until almost dawn, but eventually, exhaustion overcame her and she finally fell asleep.
Oscar stayed with her until dawn.
He couldn't sleep.
Only when Pearl was in deep sleep did he gently remove her hand from his waist and get out of bed.
After covering her with the blanket, Oscar left with peace of mind.
People were waiting outside.
When he came out, they followed him.
"Mr. Egan called, asking if you still want to find that girl. She might be helpful to you."
Oscar told him, "No need. I already know the answer."
He glanced at Pearl's door, then calmly looked away.
Several days passed, and Pearl couldn't stand it anymore. They said she needed to recover before she could go out.
But she had a strong desire to see the baby.
During this time, no matter how she asked, she couldn't get any news about the baby.
They wouldn't even show her a photo.
She was suspicious but didn't dare to think the worst.
She decided to go out, even if it was just to see the baby from a distance. It would give her peace of mind.
She sneaked out without telling Delilah and followed the directions to where the baby was kept.
She found a glass window through which she could see inside.
Seeing the baby in the incubator, she instinctively smiled with maternal affection.
A nurse doing routine checks came out, and Pearl couldn't help but ask, "Miss, where is my baby? Can you point him out to me? Just tell me the number of the incubator. I'll just look from a distance."
The nurse looked at Pearl and asked, "What's your name?"
"Pearl, my name is Pearl!" Pearl said quickly.
The nurse checked the records and told her, "There's no record of your name here. Your baby shouldn't be here."
