Chapter 389 You Won't Forgive Me
Oscar gazed at her, gently tucking her hair behind her ear. "Pearl, you always surprise me. I'm so happy."
Pearl felt relieved, holding his hand with teary eyes. "Please don't let me down again, okay? The baby and I need a home. I want our child to grow up in a healthy family, which is not too much to ask, right?"
Oscar sighed. "You won't forgive me."
Pearl frowned. "Why wouldn't I? I know you've tried hard for me. Even if things get tough, as long as I understand, I'll believe in you."
"Got it," Oscar said softly. "I'll tell you the truth. I did lock Haley up before, but she's not with me now. Don't worry about any punishment I'll face. I've made her pay for what she did to you."
Oscar smiled, clearly satisfied with his revenge, which made Pearl uneasy.
"What did you do?" she asked.
Oscar patted her head. "Nothing too bad. Haley's still alive. Don't worry."
Pearl felt unsettled. She didn't think Oscar was that cruel.
As she pondered, Oscar spoke again, "It might be a bit boring here. I'll have your friends come over to keep you company. I'll visit whenever I can."
"Okay," Pearl replied. "When can I see the baby?"
Oscar paused. "Only the doctor knows. Maybe in a month."
"Alright," Pearl said. "He's been in my belly for almost ten months, one more month won't hurt. You should share this good news with Magdalen too."
"Okay."
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in," Oscar said.
Barbara poked her head in. "Are you free right now?"
"Sure," Pearl said, surprised. "Why is your hair so short?"
Barbara had cut her hair short. With long hair, she had a feminine charm. Now, with short hair, she looked more professional and intellectual.
Barbara walked in with a slight smile. "Looks good, right?"
Pearl noticed Barbara's style had changed too. She used to dress sexy, showing some skin. Now she was dressed conservatively, with short hair, giving the impression she had changed.
"You look great," Pearl said. "Still beautiful. But why the sudden change?"
Barbara coughed and stood straight, like a soldier. "I'm not an assassin anymore; I'm a soldier!"
Pearl was shocked. "A soldier? I've only been unconscious for a week, how did things change so much? Are you okay?"
Barbara walked over, smiling. "I'm fine now. I have to thank Oscar for giving me a new identity. I'm part of the military now!"
"That's wonderful!" Pearl was happy for her. "Congratulations, Barbara! Now we can see each other often again."
Barbara was also very happy, more excited than anyone. She thought her life was over, either facing death or living as someone else's pawn. But then, she was rescued.
She hugged Pearl, saying joyfully, "Pearl, I owe it all to you. Meeting you has been my greatest fortune."
Pearl was touched. "Meeting you was my luck too!"
Seeing they had a lot to talk about, Oscar said, "Barbara's under my command. Didn't you say you wanted to learn self-defense? Barbara can teach you."
"Really?" Pearl's eyes lit up. "Sure! Once I recover, I definitely want to learn!"
Oscar smiled. Seeing Pearl happy made him happy too. He also wanted her to be able to protect herself.
"You two chat, there's plenty of time," Oscar said.
Pearl looked at him. "Are you leaving?"
Oscar nodded. "I have a lot to handle. I'll come back once I'm done."
"Okay," Pearl said, not wanting to disturb him.
Oscar walked out, gently closing the door.
Outside, Tristan Griffin was waiting, who was a well-groomed man in his fifties, wearing a suit, and he was a butler. Behind him were four strong bodyguards. He bowed respectfully to Oscar.
"Three months is your deadline. I hope you keep your promise."
Oscar's face was cold, his tone indifferent. "I know."
Hearing his firm response, Tristan respectfully said, "Then we'll be leaving."
With that, he and his men left the hospital. Several luxury cars were parked downstairs, with many bodyguards waiting. It was clear Tristan had a powerful background.
Harold stood beside Oscar, who hadn't smiled since their arrival.
"Mr. Brown, what will Ms. Harris do if you leave in three months?" Harold asked, worried, though he knew he shouldn't.
Oscar looked at the door, hearing Pearl and Barbara's laughter inside. She was still very happy. He hoped she would always be happy.
"Don't tell her about this for now. In three months, she might not need me anymore."
Oscar lowered his eyes and continued, "Didn't you say Adrian went to Eldorians? Any news from there?"
"Not yet," Harold said. "Things are unstable abroad. Mr. Egan's disappearance doesn't bode well."
Adrian's whereabouts were Pearl's only concern now.
"Regardless, we need to find him, dead or alive!"
"I'll give the orders."
Back inside, Pearl joked, "You've really come a long way. A change in identity and now you seem much more serious. So, are you joining the military now?"
"What? Was I not serious before? I was just pretending. I'm actually very serious," Barbara said, lying on the bed. "Oscar said I need to teach you self-defense. As for the future, we'll see. I might not need to join the military. It's full of guys, and I might not get used to the smell."
Pearl asked, "Oh, are there no women in the military?"
"I don't know," Barbara said. "But thinking about facing someone like Elijah every day would drive me crazy."
Pearl teased, "You seem to have a lot of interaction with Elijah."
"Interaction? He just annoys me," Barbara said, complaining about him. "He's not very smart and is quite an eyesore. Compared to him, Jeffery is much better—gentle, smart. Men like him are rare."
"Speaking of Jeffery, I wonder why he hasn't come to see me after I gave birth?" Pearl said. "I should call him. He might not know I'm still alive."
Barbara's face changed, and she quickly grabbed her hand. "You better not call him."
