Chapter 179 Standing Up

Why didn't he mention it before?

Maybe they had an agreement. It was the most basic thing not to interfere too much.

He couldn't possibly tell Pearl everything.

Quickly, Pearl withdrew her gaze.

Suddenly, a voice of mediation sounded in her ear. "Mr. Doe, we understand. We didn't mean to say anything bad, but the fact is, Peter is just complaining on your behalf. After all, you're an elder, and you haven't known for long, right? I see that Oscar doesn't respect you either."

Pearl looked at these people, who seemed to be using Oscar as a topic of discussion, not letting it go.

Then Pearl looked at Oscar again and found him remaining silent.

According to his character, he wouldn't let these people speak ill in front of him.

He was probably considering Hunter's status, as these were his close people.

"Oscar, we have no bad intentions. We've been through some very tough times together. No matter how low-key you are, you didn't even inform us about such a big event as your wedding. Does this mean you were unwilling in this marriage?" Peter's lips curled into a mocking smile.

Pearl didn't know why Peter and the others were targeting Oscar.

It was as if Oscar had become their enemy.

Pearl seemed to understand why Oscar hadn't proactively interacted with Hunter before.

Even if Oscar had been around Hunter, it was probably because of these people that he stayed away.

Facing these people, all looking at Oscar, Pearl held Oscar's hand and said calmly, "No, you all misunderstood. Oscar respects me. At my request, he didn't make it public. I work at his company and want to achieve success on my own. Just like Hunter said, we prefer a low-key life."

Pearl's words brought Oscar's attention back.

Oscar stared at Pearl, seemingly surprised that she would speak up for him.

Their attention then shifted to Pearl.

"There's no wife who doesn't need recognition. If you're wronged, tell us. We won't let him get away with it!" Peter added, as if trying to see through their relationship.

Pearl listened to Peter's words, which appeared to be complaints directed at her, but were actually aimed at Oscar.

Pearl smiled gracefully and said, "You're really overthinking. I've heard Oscar talk about his past. He has quite a few scars, probably from his time in the military, where he must have endured a lot and blocked many bullets."

As soon as she finished speaking, Peter's expression changed.

Oscar's eyes darkened, and he pursed his lips tightly together.

Pearl mentioned this just to test if any of Oscar's scars were for them.

After all, Oscar had also been injured for Pearl.

Pearl suddenly understood why Oscar didn't remember her.

Oscar had served in the military, serving the people, and Pearl was just one of them.

Oscar had saved so many people; he couldn't remember everyone.

But Pearl had remembered it for a lifetime.

Pearl also realized that risking his life to save her was just a duty, not for any other reason.

Their connection was just her wishful thinking.

Pearl smiled bitterly. They were even.

Oscar had saved Pearl once, and Pearl had also saved Oscar once. It was fair.

Seeing them all silent, Hunter spoke up for Oscar again, even more seriously, "Oscar brought Pearl here today to introduce her to everyone. You all have no sense of propriety. As punishment, drink three glasses of wine!"

Hunter had spoken, and these people dared not disobey.

After a moment of silence, Peter changed his attitude, personally holding a glass of wine and walking over to Oscar and Pearl. "It's my fault. I apologize."

"Pearl, this glass is for you."

At the same time, Peter handed a glass of wine to Pearl.

Oscar wrapped his arm around her shoulder and took the glass from Peter with the other hand. "She's allergic to alcohol. I'll drink for her."

Oscar quickly downed the glass of wine.

The others started to cheer. "Look at Oscar, always the tough guy from the camp, enduring hardships and full of vigor. Now he's a loving husband!"

"Exactly."

"Oscar, since you've introduced her to us, when will you have the wedding ceremony? You haven't had one yet, right? When the time comes, I'll prepare a big gift for you."

Pearl watched these people laughing.

It was clear that although they had been dissatisfied with Oscar earlier, Hunter's few words had resolved the tension.

Some of them were genuinely sincere.

Pearl maintained her smile.

Oscar said, "We'll let you know as soon as it's confirmed."

"Absolutely! A wedding is a big deal, an important life event. Even if you keep it low-key, don't let Pearl feel wronged."

One of them said.

Oscar smiled without saying anything.

At this moment, a lively voice suddenly called out.

"Grandpa!"

Everyone turned to see a young woman walking over.

"My precious granddaughter is here."

Hunter looked over and immediately smiled happily. He walked towards her with open arms.

Sophia walked up to Hunter and hugged him tightly. "Grandpa, I missed you so much."

Hunter hugged Sophia, his eyes full of affection. "I missed you too."

Pearl was surprised.

This girl looked familiar to Pearl.

Was Sophia Hunter's granddaughter?

It was Sophia who appeared at the ball hosted by Magdalen.

"Oscar."

Sophia broke free from Hunter's embrace and smiled at Oscar.

Oscar nodded at Sophia.

"Grandpa, Oscar is so different now, so cold," Sophia said coquettishly, snuggling into Hunter's arms.

Hunter patted Sophia's head and said with a smile, "Mind your manners. You've grown up and things are different now. Oscar has a wife."

This made Sophia unhappy.

A jealous voice came from the crowd. "Sophia, is Oscar the only one you care?"

"Yes, of course. Ever since Oscar saved her from the black bear, she has been his fan. Whenever Sophia comes to the camp, she's always seeking out Oscar. She doesn't even pay attention to us. Sophia, don't forget who used to hang out with you."

Sophia smiled awkwardly. "I haven't forgotten you. You are all family to me and Grandpa. I just have to greet everyone one by one."

After some teasing, Hunter gestured to Sophia. "Sophia, this is Pearl, Oscar's wife."

"Hello, Pearl," Sophia greeted Pearl.

Pearl responded politely, "Hello."

However, Sophia's gaze never really settled on Pearl.
