Chapter 309 Hurt
Haley was shocked by what she heard. 'Did Oscar not know Pearl was pregnant? Or was there another reason?'
Oscar's face stayed blank, his eyes cold, like Pearl didn't matter anymore.
Pearl still hoped the baby might change his mind.
She was overthinking it.
When Oscar was heartless, a baby meant nothing.
She might as well have kept it to herself.
Pearl's heart was almost numb.
"Oscar, let's go," Haley said, leaning on him, breaking the tension. "Pearl, just let it go. Better to get rid of the baby than face this shame."
Oscar's gaze shifted, his breath a bit shaky, but he said coldly, "Let's go, don't mind her. She'd say anything to remain my wife." Then they walked away without looking back.
As they passed, Haley smugly bumped Pearl's shoulder.
Pearl stumbled, supported by Sophia, who watched them leave. "How can Oscar be so cruel? Haley must've twisted things."
"No need," Pearl cut her off. She felt Oscar had changed too fast and smiled bitterly. "No matter what I say, Oscar will just see me as a liar. He won't believe me."
Sophia was anxious. "Is that it? If we knew, we wouldn't have come out today."
Pearl looked at her, her smile more painful than tears. "Does it matter? This day was bound to come. Better a short pain than a long one."
Pearl didn't want pity.
She wanted to leave; she was too embarrassed, not expecting to be deceived by Oscar twice.
"Pearl," Sophia said, noticing she could barely stand. "Maybe you should rest."
Pearl was heartbroken and dizzy.
"No need," Pearl said, pale. "Call the driver. Let's go home."
Pearl felt lost.
That house was Oscar's; going back meant being kicked out again.
"Okay, I'll call right away." Sophia was worried, thinking it was best to go home.
"I'm not going back," Pearl said, leaning against a pillar, gasping for breath.
Sophia insisted, "You haven't divorced Oscar yet; that's still your home. Even if you divorce, you need to divide the property. You'll get some money. Why shouldn't you go back? Do you want Haley to take over your home?"
Sophia was indignant. 'Why should Haley get her way?'
"Yes, we need to settle this," Pearl thought it best to go back and see what Oscar had to say.
Pearl went back, but it didn't feel like home.
It felt like a cage.
She sat on the couch, not speaking or moving, just waiting for Oscar.
Unfortunately, the Doe family's car came to pick up Sophia.
Sophia didn't want to leave; she was worried about Pearl.
But Hunter insisted she return, not wanting her involved in the couple's issues.
Pearl agreed and let Sophia go.
Sophia left reluctantly, afraid Pearl would get hurt.
But Pearl wasn't afraid anymore.
She had endured the hardest days; she could survive this.
She felt her initial worry was justified; Oscar didn't care about their child.
Even if the baby was born, Oscar wouldn't care.
Raising the child alone was better than having Oscar as a father.
The villa was quiet and cold.
Pearl sat for hours, reflecting on her life—from her early career days when she met Oscar, to becoming his wife. Despite never getting his affection or approval, she endured. She stayed patient and resilient until she finally decided to let go. Even after deciding to set him free to pursue his first love, Oscar still clung to her.
It felt like a cruel joke from God, ending in tragedy.
God never gave her a perfect ending.
This time, they were really getting divorced, right?
But why did she still hope Oscar wouldn't go through with it?
She waited, and finally, late at night, Oscar returned.
He came back in a hurry, as if just to see her briefly.
He sat opposite her immediately, with a lawyer by his side.
Pearl looked at him; he was as cold as when they first married.
Oscar didn't look at her; the lawyer took out a document from his briefcase and placed it on the table, like completing a task. "Ms. Harris, this is your divorce agreement with Mr. Brown. The apartment close to the TV station has been bought for you by Mr. Brown. This house is also yours, and you'll receive twenty million dollars as compensation. Look over the agreement and see if anything needs to be added. You can set any conditions as long as the divorce goes through."
Pearl took the divorce agreement, opened it, and confirmed his signature.
She also confirmed it was his handwriting.
Pearl felt ridiculous, needing to verify the divorce agreement even with him there.
It all felt like a dream.
Pearl calmed down, trying to accept the reality, and didn't want to argue anymore. She just asked, "Why after the proposal? Why didn't you divorce me earlier? What were you waiting for?"
She doubted Oscar's motives.
Before, it was for shares, which had been transferred.
Now, did she have no value?
She could only think that way.
After a while, Oscar's eyes grew colder. He looked at Pearl like a machine without feelings, cruelly saying, "Pearl, you're right. You have no value now. Don't overestimate a man's love. One moment he likes you, the next he doesn't. It's not surprising. You overestimated my feelings for you. A proposal means nothing. I can propose to you or any other woman. Is it that important?"
Upon hearing this, Pearl clenched her fists tightly.
He was Oscar, yet not Oscar.
She hated him.
Pearl was prepared, but her eyes were still wet with tears. She asked, "What about the child? Do you feel nothing for the baby?"
Oscar sneered. "Do you think you can fool me? You betrayed me and still want me to be the child's father? That is impossible."
"The child is yours!" Pearl said. "The child in my belly is yours."
"Pearl," Oscar interrupted her. "I never touched you."
Pearl looked at his cold eyes and he said word by word, "We're getting divorced. Don't use the child to bind me. I asked you to abort it, but you didn't. If you had, I might have considered continuing the marriage. But you refused and used the child as an excuse. I don't want to see this drama anymore. As for the child, doesn't Adrian like you? You can go to him."
Pearl slapped him hard.
