Chapter 758 Whose Is It

The doctor called over a nearby nurse. "Hey, can you take this guy to the billing office so he can check on the charges?"

The nurse, who was looking after Benjamin, already felt for Saskia and Benjamin. Seeing Nathaniel, she just assumed he was Benjamin's dad and couldn't help but spill a bit. "She's a single mom, juggling a sick kid and multiple jobs to pay the medical bills. It's really rough on her."

The nurse added, "I even suggested she upgrade to a VIP room with two beds, one for a family member. But she turned it down because it was too pricey."

Nathaniel's heart clenched with every word.

So, this was how tough Saskia's life had been these past few years.

And this kid, who was his dad?

If he was...

No way, impossible.

Saskia left Nathaniel for money back then, so decisively, cutting off all contact. How could she have had his kid?

Soon, Nathaniel got to the billing office. The nurse gave Benjamin's name and room number, and Nathaniel quickly got the medical records.

If Nathaniel had to sum up his feelings in one word, it would be "shocked."

How bad was Benjamin's illness to need so many meds?

"I want to see him," Nathaniel said, closing the medical records and turning to the nurse.

The nurse nodded. "Take a left to the elevator; the room's on the fifth floor. Once you get off, turn right and walk a few steps."

The walk wasn't long, but it felt like forever to Nathaniel.

Finally, he reached the room, his heart pounding as he placed his hand on the doorknob, gently turning it and pushing the door open.

Hearing the door, Benjamin thought it was Saskia and looked up with a smile.

But when he saw Nathaniel, the smile vanished, replaced by a wary look. "Who are you?"

Nathaniel tried to find any resemblance to himself in Benjamin's face.

But he couldn't.

Everyone who saw Benjamin said he looked just like Saskia, especially his nose and mouth, like they were cut from the same mold.

"I'm a friend of your mom's. Where's your dad?" Nathaniel asked carefully.

They say kids don't lie, so if Benjamin spoke, Nathaniel would believe him.

But Benjamin had never seen Nathaniel before and didn't know if he was good or bad, so he didn't answer his questions.

This wasn't the first time something like this had happened.

Saskia, raising Benjamin alone, sometimes had to bring him to work. During those times, bad people tried to trick him, offering candy to get Saskia's contact info or to make Benjamin follow them.

Benjamin wasn't that naive!

Unless Saskia was there, he wouldn't say anything.

"I don't believe you. If you really know my mom, where is she? Don't try to trick me!" Benjamin sat up straight.

Nathaniel looked at Benjamin, like seeing a tiny cactus, covered in thorns.Nathaniel's voice softened even more. "Your mom's downstairs. She'll be up soon."

"Then we'll talk when she gets here," Benjamin said, his wariness only growing.

Nathaniel couldn't help but chuckle.

He suddenly remembered the photos on his phone and showed one to Benjamin. "Is this your mom in the picture?"

Benjamin glanced at the screen and nodded.

"Now do you believe me? I really know your mom," Nathaniel said.

"But photos can be edited. How do I know this one's real?" Benjamin hesitated.

Nathaniel was taken aback.

He couldn't imagine the kind of malice Saskia, a single mom, had faced.

People had tried to trick Benjamin, using his love for his mom to kidnap him, and others had forged photos to threaten Saskia.

With so much experience, Benjamin knew more than other kids his age.

"I have videos too. You can check them out. If they were edited, you'd see signs," Nathaniel said, scrolling through his phone.

Benjamin finally believed him.

Since this guy was Saskia's friend, Benjamin didn't need to be so guarded.

He answered Nathaniel's earlier question. "I don't have a dad."

Nathaniel asked, "Never?"

"Yeah, he didn't want us. Since I was born, it's always been just Mom and me, so I don't want him either. Just having Mom is enough." Benjamin had once wished for a dad, but now he felt differently.

Whenever he mentioned it, Saskia would secretly cry, so he stopped asking.

Saskia loved him and was always there for him, while his dad never showed up. Benjamin didn't even know what his dad looked like.

It was clear his dad never cared about them, so Benjamin didn't want a dad. He only wanted Saskia.

"In all these years, has there been any other man in your mom's life?" Nathaniel asked, eager to know more.

But just then, the door opened again, and Saskia rushed in.

The moment she saw Nathaniel, she felt her blood run cold. How could he be here?

Saskia had planned to keep Benjamin's existence a secret.

If Nathaniel found out Saskia had his child, given how much he hated her, he would surely take Benjamin away.

He might even strip Saskia of custody, ensuring she never saw Benjamin again.

Others might not manage it, but Nathaniel, an excellent lawyer, could.

"Saskia, I really underestimated you. You even had a child," Nathaniel said, stepping closer to her.

He leaned in, whispering in her ear, "Who's the father?"

Speaking in a volume only they could hear was his greatest mercy.

He added, "You better tell me the truth, or I won't hesitate to show your son the photos on my phone, so he knows what kind of person his mom really is."

Saskia had never wronged Nathaniel, nor taken any compromising photos.

But if Nathaniel was threatening her, he must have something, whether edited or forged. She didn't want Benjamin to see such photos.

"Nathaniel, please don't. He's only three, just a child," Saskia pleaded.

Nathaniel's expression hardened.
