Chapter 180 Mistakes Come with a Price
Sophia walked directly to Oscar "Last time at Magdalen's ball, we barely had a chance to talk. Stay longer this time, okay?"
Sophia proactively wrapped her arm with Oscar's, leaving Pearl behind.
At the banquet, Sophia didn't act this way because she didn't know what kind of person Pearl was.
Moreover, Sophia had promised Magdalen to help test Oscar. Over the years, Sophia had treated Oscar like a brother and was willing to help.
Now that Oscar had a wife, Sophia should treat her like a sister-in-law and be kind.
But she didn't like Pearl.
Sophia had heard from friends that Pearl was hard to get along with.
At work, she often bully other people due to Oscar's favor!
It was said that Hathaway didn't like Pearl.
Sophia didn't know about Oscar's marriage beforehand.
It might have been better not to know.
Sophia didn't wan to deal with such a unfriendly "sister-in-law" in the future.
She hope they'd get a divorce
"I can't," Oscar said, pushing Sophia's hand away gently. "There are so many people here, be mindful."
Sophia replied, "What's the matter? You're like a brother to me. We were so close when we were young. Does your marriage change that?"
Sophia glanced at Pearl.
Pearl felt that ever since marrying Oscar, she had been targeted by many women.
Pearl naturally noticed Sophia's unfriendly gaze.
It seemed as if Pearl had taken Oscar away from Sophia.
Pearl said nothing.
Hunter noticed the scene. Although he knew Sophia only saw Oscar as a brother, such behavior was inappropriate in front of so many people.
And Hunter knew Sophia's character; she wouldn't act this way suddenly.
"Sophia, come here," Hunter called out to her.
Sophia's father had died on the battlefield early on, and her mother remarried. Sophia had been living with Hunter and listened to him.
When Hunter called her, she immediately let go of Oscar. "Okay, Grandpa."
Sophia walked towards Hunter.
But as she passed Pearl, she suddenly fell to the ground.
Pearl wanted to carry her but it was too late.
Pearl helped Sophia up.
But Sophia started to cry, pushed Pearl away, and looked at her with confusion. "Pearl, why did you trip me?"
Sophia's voice was hoarse and filled with grievance.
Pearl was taken aback.
This was only the second time Pearl and Sophia had met, and they hadn't even spoken before. It didn't make sense for Sophia to want to make things difficult for her.
Pearl pursed her lips and explained, "Miss Doe, I didn't trip you. Maybe you accidentally stepped on my dress."
Today was Hunter's seventieth birthday. Pearl didn't want the focus to be on her and didn't want Hunter's birthday party to be affected because of her.
Most importantly, Pearl didn't want Oscar to become the center of attention because of her.
"So you're saying I wronged you?" Sophia's face turned pale. "I'm bleeding, Pearl. Why would you want to scratch my face? How much do you hate me?"
Sophia had a small scratch on her cheek, with a bit of blood.
But a girl's appearance is very important, and even a little blood is enough to cause concern.
Hunter heard Sophia's cries and became worried. "What's wrong, Sophia?"
Sophia covered her face, crying. "Grandpa, I called her nicely, but she didn't like me, so she pushed me down and scratched my face. She's so malicious!"
Sophia immediately nestled into Hunter's arms, seeking comfort.
Hunter held Sophia's face and examined it carefully. It was just a small scratch, not enough to cause disfigurement. "It's a small wound, it won't be a problem. Sophia, don't cry in front of so many people."
"Grandpa," Sophia sniffled. "you have to avenge me."
Before Hunter could speak, Peter chimed in. "Sophia is hurt. Mr. Doe has never let her suffer any grievances since she was a child. Whoever dares to bully her, I won't let them off easily!"
Pearl looked at Peter, who was very strong. If it came to a physical confrontation, Pearl would definitely be in trouble.
Pearl instinctively felt afraid, but Oscar held her hand and looked at Peter coldly. "Do you think Pearl has no one to back her up?"
Pearl looked at Oscar, somewhat surprised.
No matter what they said about Oscar, he always remained silent and never retorted.
But if anyone bullied Pearl, Oscar would be the first to stand up for her, no matter who it was.
Peter also looked at Oscar, his eyes filled with anger, but he said nothing.
Oscar's gaze was icy, tired of the scene. He said indifferently, "Mr. Doe, since we're not welcome here, we'll leave."
He pulled Pearl, intending to leave.
"Stop," Hunter said, not comforting Sophia this time but frowning. "I haven't even spoken yet, and you're already arguing!"
Hunter looked at Sophia and said sternly, "Sophia, don't do such things. I know what kind of person Pearl is. But you, where did you learn such bad habits? Who taught you to frame others? "
Sophia had been crying, but hearing Hunter's stern voice, she didn't dare to cry anymore and felt a bit guilty. "Grandpa."
Hunter was a bit angry. "Don't call me Grandpa. The Doe family is full of upright people. We won't have a deceitful person. Do you want to be that kind of person? If you want to be bad, then don't call me Grandpa anymore!"
Sophia immediately stopped upon hearing his words. Standing up straight, she apologized, "Grandpa, I'm sorry. I won't misbehave. It's just you and me from the Doe family now. Please forgive me," tugging at Hunter's sleeve as she begged for his forgiveness.
Peter, seeing that Sophia was just pretending, said, "Mr. Doe, Sophia is young and doesn't understand. She won't do it again. Don't be so harsh."
Hunter sighed and looked back at Sophia. "Go apologize to Pearl."
"Okay." Sophia was still sobbing, feeling regretful that her little schemes couldn't escape her grandpa's eyes.
Sophia looked at Pearl, unwilling to apologize to such a bad woman.
But it seemed like Hunter liked Pearl a lot.
Hunter had never scolded Sophia like this before, and now he was doing it for Pearl.
Fine, one day Sophia would get her revenge.
Pearl didn't mind, considering Sophia was still young and out of respect for Hunter. She said, "It's okay, it's not a big deal."
"It's necessary to apologize," Hunter said sternly. "If such behavior is deemed forgivable, it may happen again. Sophia, you need to understand that when you make a mistake, there are consequences to face"
