Chapter 178 Mr. Doe's Birthday Party

Pearl walked over and took the dress out of the gift bag.

It was a dark green gown with a large skirt and a strapless design. The fabric felt very comfortable. The fabric was comfortable to wear. Pearl, who had been reading fashion magazines, recognized it as a haute couture piece by a famous designer.

She couldn't remember the name, but Pearl knew that the clothes designed by this designer started at one hundred thousand dollars.

Pearl suddenly remembered Haley's dress, which Oscar had bought for one hundred thousand dollars.

Pearl looked at Oscar and asked, "It must have cost a lot, right?"

Money was just a number to Oscar; what he needed was for Pearl to be happy. "When I saw it, I thought it would suit you."

"And the one you bought for Haley, did it suit her too?" Pearl blurted out without thinking.

After saying it, Pearl regretted it.

Why did she suddenly bring this up? It was making both her and Oscar uncomfortable.

Pearl pursed her lips together, expecting Oscar to blame her for being petty, but she suddenly didn't hear Oscar's voice.

This made Pearl feel puzzled, and she couldn't help but look up at him.

She saw him smiling.

Pearl felt nervous seeing the smile on his face.

"You still remember. This has been bothering you for a long time, hasn't it?" Oscar asked.

Pearl didn't say anything.

She didn't want to admit it.

She remembered a lot of things that she shouldn't have.

Oscar walked over, took Pearl's cold hands, and said calmly, "The money was lent to her. She paid me back when she earned it."

Pearl was shocked. "Lent?"

"Yes," Oscar said. "Did you really think one hundred thousand  dollars is nothing?"

"Of course, I wouldn't mind spending it on you."

Pearl had been bothered by it for a long time, and Haley had exploited it to upset her, making it difficult for her to forget about it.

Now that it was explained, Pearl felt a bit more at ease.

But Oscar's care for Haley and his plans for her future still made Pearl feel uncomfortable.

Forget it.

Pearl had nothing worth worrying about.

She dismissed those thoughts.

However, the dress now looked much more pleasing to her.

"The dress is beautiful." Pearl was very satisfied. No woman would dislike a beautiful dress. She added, "Thank you."

"As long as you like it, it was all worth it."

It took him the whole evening to choose it.

Pearl has fair skin and she looked good in any color, and the dress was just the icing on the cake.

In the evening, they went together to the Doe family.

The Doe family wasn't as far from the Brown family as she had imagined.

The last time she met Hunter at the hospital, Pearl had found it strange to come here..

Since Hunter and David were very close, why didn't Oscar often interact with Hunter?

She still didn't understand.

The Doe family was more elegant and simple than she had imagined.

The overall architecture was classic-style, and she saw a few military vehicles outside.

Judging by the insignia, the rank had to be at least a colonel.

Pearl instantly felt a sense of respect and a little constrained.

Oscar held her hand. "Don't be nervous. It's a family gathering."

Pearl saw that there weren't many cars outside and asked, "Didn't Hunter invite many people?"

"He doesn't like crowds," Oscar said. "And he dislikes the flattery in official circles. He only invited family."

Pearl asked again, "You mentioned before that Hunter only has one granddaughter, right?"

Oscar hesitated for a moment and then said lightly, "People from the military."

Hunter used to be a commander, highly respected, and even in retirement, the military people couldn't forget him.

He only had one granddaughter, so the military people were like his family.

But Pearl still sensed something unusual. Oscar's casual remark seemed a bit cold and carried a hint of helplessness.

Maybe Pearl was overthinking it.

Pearl couldn't change this habit; she always tried to analyze Oscar's emotions from his words.

She cared about his feelings.

Pearl shouldn't worry so much.

As they walked into the house, there were already many people there.

About a dozen or so.

Some were dressed in suits.

Some were in military uniforms, all looking distinguished.

Hunter was wearing formal attire, not new, but rather with a vintage feel.

As Oscar had said, Hunter was a frugal person.

Hunter was happily chatting with those people. When he saw Oscar and Pearl coming, his face lit up with a smile. "Oscar is here, and so is Pearl."

Hunter, leaning on his cane, quickly got up to greet them.

Pearl instinctively walked faster, not wanting Hunter to exert himself. "Mr. Doe!"

"Pearl," Hunter said, looking at her. "You look beautiful today. Oscar finally bought you a pretty dress!"

Hunter's words were teasing.

Pearl smiled and said, "The last two times I saw you, you were working, so I dressed simply. Actually, Oscar bought me many dresses."

She still defended Oscar.

It had become her habit.

Hunter said, "That's good. A man who loves his wife will prosper."

Hunter's gaze at Oscar was also filled with a smile.

"Mr. Doe," Oscar said in a steady voice, "Is you feeling better?"

Hunter replied, "I'm fine now. Don't worry. I've outlived your grandfather by several years already; that's enough!"

Oscar frowned. "You shouldn't say that."

Seeing Oscar's change in expression, Hunter cheerfully said, "Alright, alright, just a joke. Of course, I will live long!"

Pearl looked at Hunter; sometimes he still seemed like a child.

"Oscar is here."

"You haven't attended Mr. Doe's birthday in the past few years. Why did you come today?"

Pearl looked over. Several people in military uniforms were chatting, appearing to be in their thirties or forties.

Oscar glanced at them and spoke indifferently, "The invitation was sent, so naturally, I came."

"So, without an invitation, we couldn't get you to come," the man said with a hint of sarcasm.

Pearl observed Peter Rivera, a man in his forties with neatly combed hair and sharp features. But there was a hint of disdain in his eyes towards Oscar.

"Why did you bring a female companion?" he added. "It's a family gathering; bringing someone else isn't appropriate."

Hunter interrupted him with a tone of authority. "Peter, these are all close people. Pearl is Oscar's wife; you should respect her."

Peter looked at Hunter and said respectfully, "Mr. Doe, we're just chatting casually. Don't be upset."

"But Oscar got married, and we didn't know. We used to be in the same battalion; it's a bit inappropriate."

"Yeah, we didn't know either."

"Is he looking down on us?"

Others chimed in.

Hunter said, "Oscar's personality is like mine, low-key and not one to boast. Besides, he's left the military. It's his private matter. Now that you know, don't say anything negative."

Left the military?

Pearl looked at Oscar, who had a cold expression and was very silent. Had he been in the military before?
