Chapter 842 Difficulties

Saskia was caught off guard multiple times in just a few sentences. "So, how did Caleb get involved?"

"He's kind of like an adopted son to the Egan family, though not many people know that," Nathaniel said, frowning. It was clear he had been kept in the dark, too.

Robbie's reason for doing this was simply to give Nathaniel some competition.

So, he and Caleb...

Neither of them was winner.

Saskia felt a bit uneasy.

She imagined herself in Nathaniel's shoes. If she had been fighting for so long only to find out it was just to sharpen her competitor, she would be furious too.

Just as Saskia was about to say something comforting, Nathaniel spoke calmly, "If this had happened before, I'd be on my way to confront him right now. But surprisingly, I'm not angry at all."

"Why aren't you angry?" Saskia's heart skipped a beat, and she asked instinctively.

Nathaniel looked at her steadily for a moment, then chuckled softly and looked away. "Because there's no reason to be angry anymore. What I care about has changed."

He used to care about his work as a lawyer, so Robbie's betrayal made him angry.

Now, the only thing he cared about was Saskia.

No matter what Robbie did, it couldn't stir any emotions in him anymore, unless it was aimed at Saskia. But Nathaniel wouldn't give him that chance.

The surroundings fell silent.

It was so quiet that for a moment, it seemed like they could only hear each other's breathing and heartbeat.

Saskia's cheeks warmed up unknowingly, and she opened her mouth.

Nathaniel spoke before she could, "Do you remember what I said to you at the hotel that day? I've given you so much time to think. Don't you think it's time to give me an answer?"

An answer?

To Saskia, it was a foreign concept.

Maybe she had one years ago, but it had been crushed by Jade's ruthless four million dollars and the harsh reality.

But after all these years, the word appeared before her again.

Saskia seemed to lose her ability to speak. "I don't know."

"That's not an answer, Saskia. Whether it's a yes or a no, I just want the most resolute one," Nathaniel said again.

Saskia almost drowned in the depths of his gaze, feeling pressured.

She was extremely flustered and helpless.

She had never felt so awkward in her life.

"I really don't know. If the answer is that important to you, then give me a few more days."

"I've already given you a lot of time."

Nathaniel's eyes showed a hint of persistence. He paused, then sighed when he saw Saskia's expression. "Fine, you're just taking advantage of the fact that I like you. Since I've already given you time, a few more days won't hurt."

As long as Saskia could make up her mind, he was willing to wait as long as it took.

After that, Saskia started avoiding Nathaniel.

Even at the office, she tried to avoid him whenever possible. She used to deliver documents herself, but now she had the teams send them over.

This made Nathaniel's face darken every time.

So, the people who went almost always got scolded by the grumpy Nathaniel.

After a few days, everyone in the office had been yelled at.

"Mr. Egan is a monster."

"Hard to disagree. He made me revise a proposal five times and still wasn't satisfied. What does he want from us?"

Saskia was engrossed in her work and didn't join in the office chatter.

Her typing drew everyone's attention.

A female employee with dark circles under her eyes asked quietly, "Ms. Fuller, haven't you been chewed out yet?"

Saskia answered instinctively, "No."

As soon as she said it, she knew she was in trouble.

Sure enough, everyone's eyes lit up, and they crowded around her, asking for advice. Saskia grabbed her laptop and bolted from the office.

It was too risky.

She couldn't stay in the office anymore.

Saskia still had some data to compile, so she found a guest room to finish her work. As soon as she entered, she saw Nathaniel inside, also with a laptop, looking at her sharply.

She started to back out, "Sorry, wrong room."

Nathaniel called out to her, his eyes intense, "Saskia, have you been avoiding me lately?"

Saskia didn't know what to say.

Because of Nathaniel's words a few days ago, her mind had been in turmoil, and she couldn't figure out how to face him.

Avoiding him seemed like the best option.

But Saskia had been avoiding him long enough. Nathaniel wouldn't let her continue. He stepped forward, "You can reject me, but avoiding me? Do you think I'm a monster?"

Realizing Nathaniel misunderstood, Saskia wanted to explain but was stuck.

She didn't know how to explain.

Because what Nathaniel said seemed true.

In the end, Nathaniel left first, telling her before he left, "I said I'd give you time, so I won't pressure you. But please, don't avoid me."

Saskia felt a pang of guilt and stopped avoiding Nathaniel after that.

She tried to face him with a normal attitude.

The employees felt the change the most.

They had been getting scolded frequently, but after Saskia stopped avoiding Nathaniel, his temper improved a lot. Though he still had a stern face, it was much gentler than before.

Everyone was moved to tears.

Saskia didn't dare mention her role in this.

Soon, she had no time to think about it.

Robbie fell into a coma.

It was initially just high blood pressure, but the coma revealed coronary heart disease and other conditions, listing several illnesses.

Though not life-threatening, he couldn't manage the Egan Group anymore.

Saskia then understood why he was so eager to keep Nathaniel.

Caleb wasn't part of the Egan family.

Robbie only had Nathaniel as his biological son, so he had to ensure the company was handed over before he died, or he wouldn't rest easy.

But she could accept it; Nathaniel might not.

After Robbie fell into a coma, Nathaniel visited him several times, returning each time in silence.

"He seems not entirely wrong, but I still can't forgive him," Nathaniel frowned. For a moment, Saskia saw confusion in his eyes.

She quickly dismissed it.

It couldn't be.

But it wasn't her imagination. Nathaniel was indeed down for two days.

Fortunately, Saskia stayed with him, comforting him, "If you can't figure it out, don't think about it. Since he wants the Egan Group to be well, then manage it well."

She couldn't forgive Robbie's actions either, nor could she understand his mindset of disregarding others' wishes for his own reasons.

But she wanted Nathaniel to be okay.

Nathaniel seemed to come to terms with it. After a few days of silence, he went to the Egan Group.
