Chapter 267 I Wore It Out of Habit
They went in first, with Jeffery following, who hesitated for a moment as he stepped in.
Janetta entered, set her bag aside, and sat on the sofa.
Pearl headed to the kitchen to make three bowls of spaghetti.
Jeffery stood at the door, surveying the room with a slight smile.
Seeing him standing, Janetta said, "Don't just stand there, come sit."
Jeffery looked at her and then walked over.
Janetta poured him some coffee.
She was curious about him. He was so handsome. Pearl always had good luck with guys.
"What do you do? How old are you? How many people are in your family?" Janetta asked while sipping her coffee.
"I'm a doctor," Jeffery replied, only answering the first question, then took a sip of his coffee.
Janetta noticed a unique bracelet on his wrist and sensed a mysterious vibe. "Is that bracelet because you're a Christian?"
Jeffery squinted slightly, "No, I just wear it out of habit."
Sensing he didn't like the questions, Janetta stopped asking. Maybe he didn't want to reveal too much on their first meeting. Not everyone was as outgoing as she was.
Janetta quickly walked to the kitchen and saw Pearl busy. "Sorry for making you so busy this morning. I almost forgot you're pregnant. Let me help."
She wanted to take over Pearl's work, even though she hadn't cooked before, it shouldn't be too bad.
But Pearl refused, "I can still cook spaghetti. I usually cook for myself. You just need to sit down. I'll handle it."
Seeing Pearl's reluctance, Janetta asked, "Has Oscar come to see you?"
"Yes."
Janetta asked again, "He did even though you're getting divorced? That's not typical CEO behavior."
She knew their marriage was rocky, but Oscar's persistence showed he still cared.
"Pearl, haven't you divorced yet?"
The divorce hadn't been scheduled. "We haven't had the chance. We were supposed to go, but something came up, and then we never mentioned it again."
"You've been dragging it for a while," Janetta said. "You two are entangled, hard to separate."
It also affected her starting a new relationship.
By this time, Pearl had finished making the spaghetti.
They brought it out, and Jeffery was sitting there, so Pearl called him over to eat.
Janetta saw the strawberries on the table. "What kind of strawberries are these? They're so dark red. I've never seen them before."
"Jeffery brought them. They're called Black Pearl strawberries," Pearl said.
"The name sounds uncommon," Janetta looked at Jeffery. "But it suits you."
Jeffery smiled without saying a word.
"Can I have one?" Janetta asked.
Pearl said, "Go ahead."
Janetta ate one and said, "So sweet. These strawberries are delicious. Pearl, you should try one."
Pearl also ate one. The strawberry was rich in flavor, mostly sweet with a hint of sour, much better than common ones.
"These strawberries are really good," Pearl said, eating another. "They're the best strawberries I've ever had."
Janetta nodded in agreement.
Seeing Pearl enjoy the strawberries, Jeffery smiled. "If you like them, I'll bring more when the next batch is ready."
Pearl looked at him. "No need to trouble yourself."
Jeffery replied, "I don't eat fruit. They'd just go to waste. Better to give them to you."
Janetta eyed Jeffery, sensing something was off. He seemed to care a lot about Pearl.
"Let's eat the spaghetti," Pearl said.
They ate together. Jeffery stared at his bowl for a long time before starting and ate slowly. By the time Pearl finished, he still had half a bowl left.
Pearl took her bowl to the kitchen, and Janetta followed, nudging her shoulder. "I think he likes you."
Pearl almost choked. "Impossible. We've only met three times and barely talked."
Janetta was also pondering, it seemed she had never met such a person either. "But it feels like you two have known each other for ages. And he brought you strawberries, your favorite. Isn't that too much of a coincidence?"
"It's just strawberries."
"Some things seem simple but aren't. Every time he sees you, doesn't he try to meet your needs?"
The first time they met, he picked up something for her. Then he helped her find evidence of Haley's hearing loss. This time, he brought strawberries. It seemed like he was always trying to please her.
Pearl glanced at Jeffery in the living room. When he saw her looking, he smiled.
"Don't overthink it," Pearl told Janetta. "Maybe it's just a coincidence."
"Having someone who cares about you is better than someone who harms you," Janetta said.
"How do you know he won't harm me?" Pearl asked.
Janetta observed Jeffery. "I don't think so. He seems to want to please you. Maybe you haven't noticed, but he pays a lot of attention to you."
"Janetta, I've been having strange dreams lately. Dreams that don't belong to me. I feel like I've seen him in my dreams," Pearl said, looking at Jeffery.
"What kind of dreams?"
"I dreamt I was locked in a small dark room. It was very dark, and I was scared. There was a boy with me, telling me stories to comfort me. When I tried to see him clearly, I woke up."
"You didn't see him clearly, so how do you know it was him?" Janetta asked.
"His voice is very similar," Pearl said, puzzled. "If it was a dream, and there really was a boy comforting me, I should feel warmth. But why do I feel scared when I think of him?"
"You've always been afraid of dark, confined spaces," Janetta noted.
Seeing the complex look in Pearl's eyes, Janetta worried she might overthink. "Don't stress about it. Maybe it's not as bad as you think."
By this time, Jeffery had finished his meal. He brought his bowl over to Pearl. "I'm full, it was good."
There wasn't even a drop of soup left in the bowl.
