Chapter 211 Betrayed by Pearl
Daniel and Pearl chatted for a bit. They seemed pretty familiar with each other.
Oscar vaguely remembered Daniel, probably one of his employees.
After Pearl left, Daniel started digging through the trash.
Oscar frowned at Daniel's behavior, but only Daniel knew what he was up to.
Daniel was racing through his programming tasks.
At a big company like Brown Group, competition was cutthroat. Back at his old job, he was a big deal.
Here, he was just one of many programmers.
To get ahead, he had to stand out.
Leaving his old job was a step toward bigger dreams, and Daniel couldn't afford to slack off.
He worked tirelessly, barely taking time to eat. He'd grab a quick bite of bread and get back to work.
Just as he was about to take a bite, he noticed a bunch of people standing around him. He looked up and almost dropped his bread. "Mr. Brown!"
Oscar's tall figure loomed over him, radiating authority. Daniel jumped to his feet. "Mr. Brown, do you need something?"
Oscar eyed Daniel, who was about the same age as Pearl, and asked calmly, "Are you Daniel Wright?"
"Yes," Daniel replied, unsure why Oscar was asking. "Did I do something wrong?"
Daniel loved working at Brown Group and didn't want to get fired.
Oscar didn't say anything and walked toward the general manager's office. The general manager urged Daniel, "What are you waiting for? Get in there."
"Okay," Daniel said, hurrying to the office.
Inside, it was just Oscar and Daniel. Daniel didn't dare breathe too loudly. He knew Oscar's reputation—a man who commanded respect.
Oscar sat casually on the sofa, his eyes fixed on Daniel. "Do you know Pearl?"
"Pearl and I were college classmates. I know she's your secretary," Daniel replied.
"Why did Pearl go to the hospital?" Oscar asked.
Daniel was stunned. Was the boss really this concerned about his employees? Even a hospital visit needed such scrutiny?
Oscar's eyes never left Daniel, waiting for an answer. He wanted to verify the truth himself.
Under Oscar's intense gaze, Daniel hesitated, caught off guard by the question. Then he remembered seeing Pearl at the hospital.
Could it be about that?
Daniel quickly confessed, "Pearl is pregnant. She's pregnant!"
Oscar's face turned cold, his eyes darkening with anger. The air seemed to freeze around him.
Seeing Oscar's expression, Daniel felt scared. He didn't want to lose his job, so he continued, "I took a photo. It's torn and not clear, but you can see it's an ultrasound report showing pregnancy."
He handed his phone to Oscar.
The photos were fragmented, but it was clear Pearl was pregnant.
Oscar clenched his fists, his jaw tight, trying to control his anger.
He finally understood why Pearl wanted to leave.
She was pregnant!
He didn't know whose child it was, but she clearly didn't want to stay with him. She wanted to be with her lover.
Feeling betrayed, Oscar asked no more questions. He stood up and left with determined strides.
He came in a hurry and left just as quickly.
Daniel was left scratching his head. He thought Oscar was there to grill him, but all he got was a question about why Pearl went to the hospital.
Then Oscar just left.
What did Pearl's pregnancy have to do with Oscar?
Daniel didn't get it, but as long as he kept his job, he was good.
Oscar stepped into the elevator, shoving his hands in his pockets to hide his rage. "Find out where Pearl is right now!" he barked coldly.
How dare she betray him?
Even if she ran to the ends of the earth, he'd drag her back!
Harold had never seen Oscar this furious, like he was ready to tear someone apart.
When Oscar started asking about Pearl's whereabouts, Harold shivered, guessing Pearl was in for it once found.
He could only hope she'd get a bit lucky.
Meanwhile, Pearl sneezed, tears welling up in her eyes.
She wiped them away with a tissue and kept working on her document.
Who was thinking about her?
Maybe Kittie and Evans?
She had just called them a few days ago, so probably not.
"Pearl, the editor-in-chief wants you to revise this news article," a colleague said, handing her a document.
"Okay, I'll get right on it," Pearl replied, taking the paper.
Pearl worked as an editor at a TV station.
She loved news, so this job was a perfect fit.
Her friend Jennifer had recommended her for the position.
Even though she was starting fresh, her rich work experience meant she didn't start as an intern. She was already handling the TV station's Instagram, editing texts, and turning reader submissions into posts.
This job seemed like just typing, but it wasn't something just anyone could do.
If the writing was dull, Instagram might lose followers.
It required good writing skills, interesting topics, and the ability to connect with readers.
Pearl adapted quickly.
She had been the president of the literature club in college, so she hadn't lost her touch.
One of her articles even got over ten thousand views. Not viral, but a nice little win.
Pearl revised the editor-in-chief's news article, and it was almost time to clock out.
"Pearl, it's time to go. See you tomorrow!" a colleague waved.
"Okay, see you," Pearl smiled back.
She had only been there a few days but had prepared to join the TV station before leaving Oscar.
So she started the job the next day.
Pearl was efficient and got along well with her colleagues.
But she didn't have many friends there yet. Adapting to a new place took time, and after work, she had no other plans.
Her apartment was close to the company, less than ten minutes away.
She passed through a residential area on the way.
At the entrance, there was a large square where people walked, chatted, and kids skated.
Pearl rested there for a while, feeling at ease watching the lively scene.
She touched her belly, a slight smile on her lips. Soon, she wouldn't be alone anymore.
She got up and headed home.
The road was pretty deserted, with almost no one around, just dim streetlights casting long shadows.
Suddenly, she noticed another shadow.
She took a step, and the person behind her took a step.
She stopped, and they stopped too.
A sense of unease crept over her, and she quickened her pace.
As she sped up, the person behind her did too, closing in.
Just as she was about to swing her bag in defense, the person grabbed her hands.
Pearl kicked, but the person wrapped his arm around her waist and lifted her up.
Pearl screamed in fright.
