Chapter 572 The Art of Provocation
Pearl never thought Magdalen would show up at the crack of dawn, especially to borrow clothes.
What kind of clothes could Magdalen possibly need from her?
Pearl gave her a once-over, trying to figure out what was up, but found nothing. And even if it was for money, she wouldn't hesitate for a second.
Pearl set down her teacup, flashed a smile, and got up. "Alright, let's head upstairs and pick out something for you to wear."
Magdalen looked surprised. "Aren't you gonna ask why I need to borrow clothes?"
Pearl was curious, but since Magdalen didn't spill, she didn't push it.
They headed to the dressing room, where the sheer number of clothes made it tough to choose. But no matter what Magdalen picked, she wasn't feeling it.
She sighed, "I don't think any of these are right for me."
"Well, duh. These are for someone my age. You're a bit older, so you need something more mature," Pearl said.
She stared at Magdalen for a moment and then asked softly, "But you've got a closet full of clothes. And if you don't have the right ones, you could always go shopping. Why come to me?"
Magdalen blushed, a little smile creeping onto her face like she was remembering something nice.
Pearl wasn't slow; she got it right away.
She leaned in close and teased, "So, making moves with Mr. Davies, huh? Spill the tea, how far have you gotten?"
"What do you mean? I just think he's decent and wanna get to know him better. I haven't agreed to date him yet, so don't tease me."
Even if she hadn't agreed, Magdalen must already like him.
Pearl got it. "You came to borrow clothes 'cause you think you're older than Mr. Davies and wanna wear something younger to match him, right?"
"Exactly, but I don't think I can pull off your clothes." Magdalen sighed, thinking she might have to buy some new ones, but she already had plans to go shopping with Archie at noon, so there wasn't enough time to buy anything now.
If she didn't snag something new, sticking to her own wardrobe would blatantly reveal the age difference between her and Archie, sparking gossip for sure. Magdalen wasn't aiming to be the town's main topic of conversation.
"How about this outfit? I've seen you wear it, and it looks pretty good. It doesn't age me, does it?" Magdalen picked out a denim outfit, though she didn't really like it. Time constraints forced her choice.
Pearl put the clothes back and picked out a white dress for her. When Magdalen tried it on, it immediately brought out her elegance and gave her the youthful look she wanted.
Magdalen was super satisfied and changed into the dress right there.
Their figures were similar, so the dress fit well. Looking at herself in the mirror, Magdalen's smile grew even wider.
Pearl helped her with her hair and gave her some heartfelt advice. "Even though we think Archie is a good guy, you still need to keep your eyes open. If you sense anything off, make sure to pull back promptly."
"I know, but he really is a good person. Not only is he knowledgeable, but he's also genuinely kind." Talking about Archie, Magdalen's words were sweet, only saying good things.
Pearl wasn't sure if it was true, but seeing Magdalen all starry-eyed, she realized that Magdalen was too captivated to consider anything else at the moment, so she decided to let it pass.
After changing clothes and heading downstairs, Oscar came back from his workout. He walked over, gave Pearl a hug, and gently asked if she had eaten breakfast.
Then he noticed Magdalen and asked, "Why are you wearing Pearl's clothes? Don't you have any of your own?"
As he spoke, he pulled out a bank card and handed it to her. "Buy whatever you want. Don't worry about saving money on my account."
"If I spend it all, what will Pearl have left?" Magdalen tried to joke.
Oscar just smiled and hugged Pearl tighter, replying, "All my money is with Pearl. What I'm giving you is just my pocket change."
"Is that really true?" Magdalen found it hard to believe that Oscar, the president of a corporation, would hand over all his money to Pearl.
Seeing they weren't joking, Magdalen was even more surprised. "If Archie gave me all his money, I wouldn't dare accept it."
Pearl remarked, "Why not? Just take it. If he doesn't give it to you, that's the problem."
Pearl's words made sense, but Oscar hadn't actually put all his money in her name. His personal stash was with Pearl, but the company's assets were still under his control.
"Oscar, what are you thinking? How can other men live up to this?" Magdalen inquired.
She found it hard to believe. While couples should be united, giving all assets to the other half seemed too risky.
"I never plan to divorce Pearl. Who else would I give it to?" Oscar kissed Pearl and said with a grin, I want to make everyone else jealous."
Pearl nodded and affectionately nuzzled his chin.
Magdalen quickly left, grabbing her handbag and heading out. She'd rather go spend time with Archie.
After Magdalen left, they immediately got serious, each sitting on opposite ends of the sofa, not speaking to each other.
"Are you really not going to let Christopher participate in the sports meet?" Oscar frowned, clearly unhappy about it, but he knew he had to compromise for Pearl's sake.Pearl nodded, sipping her tea seriously. "Yep, he's not participating. If Christopher wants to exercise, I can create a training plan for him myself. He doesn't need the school's activities."
Oscar said, "This event isn't about molding the children into something specific; it's about fostering physical activity and camaraderie among classmates. You got it?"
"There's no need to explain. I won't let what happened last time happen again." With that, she went upstairs.
Oscar caught up and grabbed her, saying, "You're lacking confidence. Let me guess, you're afraid of losing to other parents. Yes, that must be it. You won't lose in sports, but other activities might be different."
This sports meet wasn't just about parents and kids competing in sports; there was also a cooking event. It wasn't just about cooking for the kids but making a dish for everyone to taste.
Pearl glared at Oscar angrily. "You're trying to provoke me."
Oscar retorted, "No, I'm just telling the truth. Is that not the case?"
"No. The sports meet, right? We'll participate," Pearl stated firmly.
She was determined to show Oscar how foolish it was to doubt her cooking skills. She had already decided she wouldn't need the other parents to cook; she could handle all the dishes herself.
