Chapter 724 You Only Love Yourself

"She's really sick. Even if she gets surgery now, she'll probably be stuck in bed for the rest of her life." Harold sighed about Ember, "She did this to herself."

At first, Desiree was super nice to her, always caring and thoughtful, visiting often and making all kinds of healthy soups.

If Ember hadn't stirred up trouble, the family would be happy now, looking forward to a new baby. But life didn't work with 'what ifs,' only karma.

Desiree was quiet for a while. "How did it get to this point?"

When they were still married, Ember was in pretty good health. How long had it been?

"She was faking being sick, but now she's really ill, and it's getting worse fast. She's already missed the best time for treatment," Harold explained briefly.

Desiree almost said, "She had it coming."

But since Ember was Harold's mom, she held back.

After hanging up, Desiree stayed in her room, thinking a lot. Ember was now struggling to take care of herself. Even if she wanted to keep messing with their relationship, she couldn't. So, should she get back with Harold?

Desiree really didn't know.

Then she heard voices outside. Opening the window, she saw Daryl standing in front of Tessa.

"We made it clear last time; there's no need to meet again. Why are you still coming over?" Tessa sounded annoyed.

The proof was right there, but how could Daryl still be so stubborn?

As a mom, would Tessa be swayed by sweet talk and force Desiree to be with Daryl? No way.

"Mrs. Sandvik, I know you don't want me with Desiree, and I don't expect that. I'm here to take back the stuff I sent over," Daryl said humbly.

His head was slightly lowered, and from this angle, Tessa couldn't see the intensity in his eyes.

She nodded. "Alright, come with me to get them. I haven't touched any of it."

They weren't selling their daughter, and they didn't need those things. Since Desiree and Daryl couldn't be together, clear boundaries were necessary, and everything Daryl had sent needed to be returned. The unused gifts would go back to him, and they would compensate him for the ones already used.

The more Tessa acted this way, the more extreme Daryl's thoughts became. They wanted to draw a clear line, but he didn't agree!

After entering the house, Daryl didn't leave right away but kept pleading with Tessa, "I also want to invite you all to a meal, just one last meal."

"I don't think it's necessary, and besides, I usually don't eat dinner to stay fit," Tessa politely declined.

Daryl still wouldn't give up, saying all the right things, "It's just one meal. We can meet outside. Let me see Desiree one last time. I promise, after this meal, I'll delete her contact info and never come back."

"My mom's made it clear; there's no need for that," Desiree said, coming downstairs. There were things Tessa was too polite to say, but Desiree wasn't. With someone like Daryl, after this meal, he'd definitely come up with more tricks to bother them.

So it was better to shut him down right from the start.

Tessa agreed with Desiree, "You should go now. I'll transfer the money to your account directly. These things are too heavy for you to carry alone. I'll have the bodyguard help."

Hearing the word "bodyguard," Daryl felt even more bitter.

Her words were a subtle warning that if he tried anything, the bodyguard would step in and toss him out.

He gave Desiree one last look, "Then I'll go. Desiree, take care of yourself."

'You'd better not go out' Daryl secretly thought.

He had followed Desiree before and would keep it up. Once he found the right moment, he would forcibly take her away.

When intimate photos of them hit the internet, what could Liam and Tessa do but agree to their relationship?

This world was always harsher on women than men. Unless they didn't care about Desiree's reputation at all, even a little concern, with his instigation, they'd have no choice but to nod in agreement and accept him as their son-in-law.

Watching Daryl walk away, Desiree had a bad feeling. But she couldn't pinpoint what was wrong.

"Sweetheart, everything has been returned. From now on, do whatever you want. We'll always be your strongest support," Tessa encouraged her.

Desiree hugged Tessa. No matter what, being cautious was better than not.

The next day, when she went to work, she put a bottle of pepper spray in her backpack. It had various ground peppers, and just a little could make someone cry.

The whole day passed without incident. In the evening, Desiree and her colleagues planned to go to a nearby restaurant. There were several alleys around, and as Desiree walked by one, a hand reached out and pulled her in.

Looking up, she saw Daryl standing in front of her.

He had shed his usual dignified demeanor, his eyes filled with madness, and he tightly gripped Desiree's arms. "I love you so much. I'm willing to do anything for you. Why won't you be with me? Desiree, do you even care at all?"

Desiree never recognized his good qualities, nor did her parents. They treated him this way first; everything he did was out of desperation.

"Daryl, do you love me? You only love yourself. Everything you do is to get me and to find a perfect wife for yourself. You don't care about my well-being!" Desiree was utterly disgusted with him.

She sternly warned, "There's a police station within a mile, and there are vendors and customers around. If I scream, someone will be here soon. I don't want to escalate this."

Daryl wasn't afraid at all; instead, he laughed maniacally.

He let go of Desiree's arms, took two steps back, and never really believed she could get away. "Why don't you take a look outside? All those vendors have closed up and gone home. There's no one around anymore."
