Chapter 140: Intuition or Disdain

Pearl asked, "If I'm not allowed to spoil your mood nor Magdalen's, and still have to make Hathaway happy on top of that, what’s left for me?"

Oscar was a bit displeased. "Pearl, don't forget, it was you who told Grandpa initially that you wanted to marry me."

Pearl remembered the ten million dollars and remembered those shares.

Her head was pounding and her heart felt like it was being tightly squeezed by invisible hands.

For a moment, Pearl found it hard to breathe.

Pearl didn't want to discuss these matters with Oscar anymore. She leaned against the car window and closed her eyes.

Oscar didn't speak anymore, assuming she was tired.

Before long, the driver parked the car at the entrance of Serenity Haven Estates.

Oscar hadn't planned on asking Pearl to rest a bit longer, but to his surprise, Pearl pushed open the car door.

Watching Pearl walk steadily, Oscar suddenly realized that she wasn't tired, but she just didn't want to face him.

Oscar pursed his lips and followed her, saying, "Go on and check if everything's to your liking. Then we'll get changed and go see my aunt."

"What could go wrong? A villa under Mr. Brown's name must have the most valuable setup," Pearl chuckled.

Oscar pursed his lips. He didn't respond but lit a cigarette. At that moment, all he wanted was a smoke.

Pearl didn't like the smell of smoke, but she couldn't stop Oscar from smoking. Usually, Pearl would immediately help dissipate the smoke and place a mint-scented sachet in his pocket.

This time, the smell of smoke made Pearl instinctively move away from Oscar.

He noticed it. He took a drag of the cigarette and then slowly exhaled.

With a burning cigarette between his slender fingers, shrouded in white smoke, Oscar's face was slightly blurred, but his eyes were fixed on Pearl.

Pearl had changed a lot recently.

She helped Oscar find a replacement so quickly.

She distanced herself from him.

Overall, she seemed somewhat aloof and wasn't as gentle as she was before.

"Let's go." With that thought, Oscar abandoned the idea of continuing to smoke, threw the cigarette down, and crushed it.

He had originally intended to show Pearl the setup at Serenity Haven Estates, but since Pearl showed no interest in it, they didn't linger and headed straight to Magdalen's place to have fun.

Pearl didn't say a word and obediently followed Oscar.

Once in the car, they remained silent. Oscar reached out to Pearl, one hand holding hers and the other around her shoulder.

Pearl leaned against Oscar's chest, listening to his strong heartbeat.

It was the most peaceful moment they had in recent times.

Pearl reminded herself a few more times that sooner or later, Oscar would agree to divorce her and that she didn't have much time left.

Pearl had to get Oscar to agree to the divorce before anyone noticed she was pregnant.

They arrived at Dreamscape Retreats at 11:45pm.

It was brightly lit, with loud music playing.

Oscar led Pearl out of the car, and at the entrance, Magdalen personally came out to greet them.

Seeing Oscar and Pearl hand in hand, Magdalen was very pleased. "It's a masquerade ball, so you guys pick a mask each. The ball is in full swing now, I've invited many friends, so feel free to invite your own."

There were many young people around.

As Magdalen finished speaking, she pushed Oscar aside and personally picked a white butterfly mask for Pearl, saying, "Pearl, I think white suits you. It's beautiful, pure, and noble."

Magdalen held Pearl's hand and left Oscar behind.

Oscar followed, only to be stopped by the security guard at the entrance. "Mr. Brown, this is Ms. Brown's masquerade ball, please respect the rules."

Despite Magdalen's age, she liked to be addressed as "Ms. Brown" like the younger crowd.

Seeing Magdalen leading Pearl away, Oscar chose to respect the rules, picked up a silver-white metallic mask, and put it on his face.

By the time Oscar entered, Magdalen had already taken Pearl to the second floor lobby.

From the second floor, no one could see them, but they had a good view of the entire first-floor hall.

There were many people at the ball, dressed in elegant attire, with the younger ones showcasing their figures.

Pearl didn't understand the purpose of Magdalen hosting such a ball.

"Have some juice. Tonight, I can help you try to cheer Oscar up." Magdalen pushed a glass of juice in front of Pearl, smiling slyly.

Although Oscar said he married Pearl for the shares David offered back then, Magdalen didn't believe that Oscar and Pearl, after three years of marriage, had no feelings at all.

Pearl hurriedly grabbed Magdalen's hand. "Magdalen, please don't. I've been working hard recently. I just attended a banquet earlier and I didn't want to come, but you said not to disappoint you."

Magdalen patted Pearl's hand and chuckled, saying, "Since you came to my place to not disappoint me, you should listen to me and stay here!"

It was Magdalen's party, so Pearl couldn't refuse.

Still, they were indeed  in a good spot.

Pearl saw Magdalen put on a purple mask before going downstairs to approach a man wearing a silver-white metallic mask.

Even with the mask, Pearl recognized at a glance that it was Oscar.

Oscar was also familiar with Magdalen, and he frowned, asking, "Where did you take Pearl?"

"I thought you only cared about those shares. Look, I organized this ball and invited so many people to arrange blind dates for Pearl. As her husband, no, as her soon-to-be ex-husband, you should help her out. If you can't be a couple, being friends should be good enough." With that, Magdalen gestured around.

Under the mask, Oscar's expression was extremely unpleasant, and he coldly replied, "Magdalen, don't test me with such things. I don't like it."

Magdalen didn't care. "Then find Pearl among these people. She's your wife. Can't you even recognize her?"

With that, Magdalen walked away.

There were many people present.

Pearl wore a white butterfly mask and had worn the same professional pink suit that she had worn to accompany Oscar at the Hall Group's banquet earlier.

Since Magdalen had spoken, Pearl must have changed into a different outfit.

Looking around, although there were many people, Oscar was sure that Pearl wasn't among them.

He noticed the second floor.

At that moment, Oscar took a step forward.

Magdalen and Pearl both noticed Oscar's actions.

Ripples stirred in Pearl's heart.

Was this Oscar's intuition or just a coincidence?

"Oscar!"

Suddenly, a clear and melodious female voice called out from not far away.
