Chapter 282 Making a Phone Call

"Oscar."

Oscar was sitting when he heard Pearl's voice. His eyes lit up with emotion. "I miss you," he said hoarsely over the phone.

Pearl gripped her phone tightly but stayed silent.

She'd just narrowly escaped a kidnapping today and was still on edge. Jeffery was next door, and she wasn't sure if it was safe. Talking to Oscar helped distract her.

"Where are you?" she asked.

Oscar saw people training outside, their shouts loud, so he closed the window. "Out of town."

"You went out of town?" Pearl remembered their parting; Oscar had left for business, but she didn't know he'd leave town.

"Yeah, had some things to take care of." He didn't specify what, not wanting her to worry.

"How have you been? Eating on time?" Oscar asked, still concerned.

Pearl thought for a moment. "I'm fine."

Oscar wanted her to say more; just hearing her voice was enough.

He checked the time. "Are you going to sleep?"

"Yeah," Pearl replied.

Oscar didn't want to keep her up. "Then rest well. I won't bother you."

"When are you coming back?" Pearl asked.

Oscar smiled. "In a day or two."

Pearl continued, "Don't you have an interview to do? Finish it when you get back."

She was just talking about work.

Oscar thought she missed him and wanted him back soon. She was still so indifferent.

Despite this, Oscar couldn't get angry. "I know. I won't let you miss your deadline."

Pearl still held her phone tightly, feeling insecure and anxious today.

Talking to Oscar made her feel a bit better.

Oscar noticed she hadn't hung up and wasn't speaking. "Is there anything you want to say?"

Pearl hesitated. "No, I'm going to sleep. I'll hang up now."

She didn't tell him about the kidnapping, afraid of saying too much and relying on him too much.

She knew she'd have to leave him eventually.

Oscar looked at his phone for a while, sensing something was off, then put it in his pocket and went out.

Pearl turned on all the lights in the room. That way, she could see if there was anything unusual. The problem was that it was too dark with the lights off, and she didn't like that feeling.

Actually, she had been much better before. At most, she couldn't stand being in small spaces. Today she might have been frightened, and she didn't like staying in a dark room.

She lay in bed, tossing and turning. Just as she was about to fall asleep, the doorbell rang, startling her.

The doorbell rang twice, and Pearl's heart raced.

She opened her bedroom door, looking towards the entrance. If someone was here to kidnap her, they'd probably break in.

At that moment, her phone rang. It was Janetta.

"What are you doing? Why aren't you opening the door?"

Knowing it was Janetta, Pearl's tension eased, and she quickly opened the door.

Janetta stood there, looking confused. "What's wrong with you? I thought you weren't home."

She was carrying a lot of stuff.

Seeing Janetta felt like seeing a savior. Pearl hugged her. "Thank goodness you came. I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight otherwise."

"What happened?" Janetta asked. "No wonder Oscar called me to check on you. Something must be up."

Oscar wouldn't have asked her to come for no reason, so she was worried and came over.

"He called you?" Pearl was a bit surprised.

Janetta nodded. "Oscar had something to do, so he asked me to keep you company."

She touched Pearl's face. "Look at you, you're pale. Were you scared?"

Pearl held her hand. "I don't know who I offended, but I was almost kidnapped today."

"What?" Janetta was shocked. "Why didn't you tell Oscar? He'd definitely help you catch the kidnapper. And why would someone want to kidnap you? Think about it, who could you have offended?"

Pearl thought about it. Since marrying Oscar, many people had been hostile towards her, both at work and in life. "We'd have to investigate one by one."

"How did you get away?" Janetta asked.

Pearl immediately thought of Jeffery, which troubled her. She couldn't tell if he was good or bad. "Do you remember Jeffery?"

"Of course, I remember."

"He saved me."

Janetta's eyes widened, then she smiled. "I told you, he cares about you. He saved you at a critical moment."

"Don't you think it's strange?" Pearl asked, "How could it be such a coincidence that he lives next door and saved me?"

She didn't believe it at all.

Janetta replied, "But he didn't hurt you."

"What if he's trying to gain my trust?"

"Why would he want to do that?" Janetta asked again.

Pearl shook her head. "I don't know. I just feel it's not that simple."

So, she could never fully trust Jeffery.

Janetta, seeing Pearl lost in thought, quickly said, "You should eat something. You're pregnant, so you need to get the right nutrition for the baby. I see your belly slowly growing."

Pearl followed her gaze to her stomach and gently touched it. "Yes, I can't let anything happen to the baby."

That was her biggest concern.

She wasn't alone now; she had a baby.

"I'll stay with you for the next few days." Janetta was also worried about her. Pregnant women are more vulnerable and tend to overthink.

"Will I be interrupting your work?"

"I'm more worried about you," Janetta said. "I can't be at ease until Oscar comes back."

Pearl bit her lip. "Why did you mention him?"

Janetta said, "Look, you got kidnapped when he wasn't here. The kidnappers must have some power."

Pearl thought she made sense.

And it probably wasn't that simple; otherwise, so many people wouldn't be after her.

Meanwhile, Hathaway was waiting at the door, holding two thermos bottles.

She kept looking inside until Haley's assistant came out. She said with a smile, "Mae, how is Haley? She left my house without saying a word last time, and I've been so worried. I've been calling her these past few days, but no one answered. Is she okay?"
