Chapter 568 A Familiar Face
"Archie had a run-in here? How the heck did that happen?" Pearl barged into the office, catching Oscar glued to the surveillance footage. She dropped her voice. "What went down? Wasn't it you?"
Oscar shot back, "You think I did it?"
He eyeballed the secretary leaving the break room. The second he saw someone moving, he nudged Pearl. "Keep an eye on that."
Not that he needed to; Pearl was already glued to the screen, feeling like she knew this person.
The guy knew the camera spots, only showing his back and rocking a baseball cap, making it tough to ID him. Still, Pearl had a nagging feeling she recognized him.
The footage showed him strutting into the break room and walking out all cool. Somehow, no one spotted him.
"Doesn't this guy look familiar?" Pearl muttered.
Oscar's face was all business as he switched the feed to outside the CEO's office, catching the guy hopping into the elevator.
"He's got some nerve," Pearl blurted.
Leaving by the elevator like he owned the place, he had to be an insider.
"We gotta call the cops. I don't care who he is, I'm not letting this slide." Pearl shot Oscar a look, worried he'd waver. "If you can't handle this, I'll be the bad guy."
"No need." Oscar didn't want her catching flak.
Knowing she was looking out for him, he planted a kiss on her cheek and grinned. "I'm too good-looking to be the bad guy."
"You're shameless."
"I've always been shameless with you, haven't I?"
They bantered a bit. Then Oscar told the secretary to call the cops, and he and Pearl headed to the hospital to check on Archie.
To dodge reporters, Oscar had the hospital set up a different entrance. When their car pulled into the alley, the hospital director was already waiting.
After some small talk, they headed upstairs.
On the way, the director gave them the lowdown on Archie's condition. It wasn't too bad, but the Davies family was all over it.
Oscar frowned. "What did they say?"
Even though Archie wasn't the heir, he was a standout since he was a kid and the Davies elders adored him. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been allowed to mess around for so long. Other young ones would've been sent off to get experience ages ago, not to mention getting a fat allowance every month.
"No one from the Davies family has shown up. Just Archie's mom called, asking me to take good care of him." The director was puzzled, but Oscar got the Davies family's vibe.
They were worried but wouldn't jump the gun. They'd hold off on making any moves until they had a better grasp of the situation.
Oscar figured the Davies family was waiting to see how Archie felt before deciding their next step.
If he was right, keeping Archie calm was key. Too bad he didn't bring Magdalen. Reflecting on this, Oscar berated himself for always considering using Magdalen to keep Archie under control.
It was straight-up manipulation. Even if he didn't want to admit it, it was the cold, hard truth.
At the ward's door, the director had to bounce for other business but gave them a heads-up not to stir up any drama, or he couldn't back them up.
Oscar nodded and pushed the door open.
"Oscar," Archie's weak voice greeted him. "This must be your wife? You two look like a perfect match, no wonder you guys are so tight."
Archie looked all envious, and Pearl's memory jogged.
She set down the fruit basket, pulled up a wooden stool, and sat by the bed. "A good relationship comes from true love. Mr. Davies, you're such a catch, you'll find the right girl for sure."
She didn't drop any names, hoping Archie would spill about Magdalen.
Archie wasn't dumb. He gave a faint smile. "I'm afraid I don't have that kind of luck. I was too competitive when I was young, and now it's payback time. Maybe I'm meant to be solo."
"If you say that, I really don't know how to respond. Is it because of the drugging incident at our group?" Pearl cut to the chase.
Archie glanced at Oscar, a bitter smile on his lips.
Pearl looked up, exchanged glances with Oscar, and sighed.
Archie said, "Mrs. Brown, what's wrong? Why so glum? No need for that. Don't worry, I know this incident must be all over the place. Once I'm better, I'll clear things up. I won't let Magdalen take any heat."
"Mr. Davies, the one taking the heat now is Oscar. You must be mistaken." Pearl frowned. "We didn't drug you, but it did happen in our group, so we are responsible. However..."
"Pearl, chill. He didn't mean it that way," Oscar saw the displeasure in Archie's eyes and quickly cut in.
He gently patted Pearl's back. "You wait outside. I'll talk to Mr. Davies."
Pearl left the ward and plopped down on a bench in the hallway. She replayed the figure from the surveillance footage in her mind, more and more convinced she knew the person, but couldn't pin down who it was.
A footstep snapped her out of it. She looked up and saw Marvin sneaking around the stairwell.
Pearl's eyes widened, and she jumped up from the bench.
She burst through the door and shouted, "I know who that person is."
"Who?" Oscar looked at her.
Pearl nodded and pointed to the door. "Marvin, it's Marvin. He's outside now. I'm sure he's holding a grudge over Mr. Davies saving Magdalen last time."
"Marvin?" Archie thought hard, and after recalling who it was, he sneered, "If that's the case, leave this guy to me."
"What are you planning to do?" Oscar had let Marvin off once, but he wasn't about to let it slide this time. He needed to make Marvin regret not listening to his warning.
Archie said, "I have my plans, Mr. Brown. Don't worry, it won't affect Magdalen."
"That's good. I'll leave him to you. I won't meddle or inquire further." Oscar handed him the copied surveillance footage, engaged in some courteous small talk, and left with Pearl.
He was curious to see how Archie would handle this. The Davies family was known for their unique ways. Would Archie be like his brothers?
After leaving the hospital, Oscar got a message from his subordinate. RavenWing's crew had kidnapped someone from the Davies family.
With this mess still hanging, they had ticked off the Davies family again. Oscar couldn't waste any time and immediately drove over.
