Chapter 822 Let Me Hold You

Nathaniel didn't back down; instead, he lifted his gaze. "Wasn't it you who did it? Or are you just too scared to admit it?"

Robbie was fuming.

Nathaniel's face was cold, but he felt just as bad inside.

When he first learned the truth, he couldn't believe it.

Even though their father-son relationship was strained, Nathaniel thought that family would never betray each other. But this incident slapped him hard, telling him he was wrong.

Robbie was so angry he started coughing.

Jade, caught between them, didn't know what was going on. She tried to comfort Robbie while also urging Nathaniel to stop. "Please, stop. Your dad has high blood pressure; this could make him sick."

Saskia saw Nathaniel clench his fists and reached out to him.

Feeling her silent support, Nathaniel felt a bit better.

Robbie's face only started to look better after a while.

But the way the father and son looked at each other was still icy.

Robbie took a few breaths, his eyes heavy as he looked at Nathaniel. "Did you come back just to accuse me?"

"More than accusing you, I want to know what you were thinking. How could you do something so ruthless to your own son? Is the family business really that indispensable to me?" Nathaniel asked in a deep voice.

"You're my son. Who else but you can inherit the Egan Group?"

"There are plenty of cousins. Surely one of them can take over."

Robbie let out a cold laugh.

He had been a dominant figure in the business world for half his life. There was no way he would hand over his life's work to someone else.

"Given the situation, you have no choice but to stay with the Egan Group," Robbie said, straightening his collar and making his stance clear.

Jade was stunned. "Robbie, what do you mean by that?"

"It means the rumors online about me lacking professional ethics and violating lawyer regulations were spread by him."

"Robbie, is what Nathaniel said true?"

Robbie didn't answer.

Jade's eyes gradually filled with disbelief, realizing Nathaniel was telling the truth. She was furious. "How could you do this? He's your son! Even if you're unhappy with his career choice, you shouldn't use such tactics against him."

Robbie pointed at Nathaniel, his tone helpless. "Then tell me, if he had the choice, would he stay with the company?"

Jade was at a loss for words.

It was indeed unlikely.

Nathaniel's decisions were beyond their control as parents.

When Nathaniel decided to leave the family business and become a lawyer, Jade couldn't understand why he made such a choice.

Over the years, they had tried to persuade him countless times, even scolded him, but nothing worked.

"I think even if Mr. Nathaniel Egan has his reasons, he shouldn't use such methods. Maybe businessmen can lack morals, but father and son are different," Saskia suddenly interjected.

Robbie's displeased gaze turned to her.

Nathaniel stepped forward, blocking Robbie's view of her.

Seeing how protective he was, Robbie snorted coldly. "You must be Saskia Fuller. The Egan family isn't an ordinary family. Being born into the Egan family means he has responsibilities, and the Egan Group is that responsibility."

"But..."

"What do you, an outsider, know? He shouldn't have brought you here today."

Before Saskia could respond, Nathaniel declared coldly, "She's not an outsider. Saskia is the one I want to marry. I won't marry anyone else in this lifetime."

Saskia looked at him in surprise.

Nathaniel's gaze was more serious than ever.

Anyone could see that Nathaniel's words were sincere.

Jade felt a mix of complex emotions and relief as she watched.

A few years ago, she would never have imagined that someone she once looked down on would not only be brought home by Nathaniel but also be accepted as her daughter-in-law.

Two out of three people accepted Saskia, leaving only Robbie dissatisfied.

He frowned critically at Saskia, then looked at Nathaniel. "Is this why you reject other women? What does she have? Her family background doesn't match yours, and her job is just fine."

Nathaniel narrowed his eyes. "Did you plant someone in the company to spy on me?"

Otherwise, it didn't make sense how Robbie, who was semi-retired, knew so much.

Robbie didn't seem flustered at all. "Is that spying? I was just worried you wouldn't manage the company well."

Nathaniel couldn't hold back any longer.

He stood up, his face icy as he looked at Robbie.

Robbie stared back at his towering son. "What, now that you're capable, you won't listen to your father anymore?"

"I don't need your guidance. I can't take it," Nathaniel said coldly, taking Saskia and leaving.

Robbie was furious.

"If you leave, don't come back!"

But Nathaniel didn't look back.

The car was parked by the roadside. Nathaniel stopped halfway, staring outside with an unreadable expression.

Saskia tried to comfort him. "Don't be too upset."

"Saskia, I want to hold you," Nathaniel suddenly said, his deep voice tinged with a hoarseness that made it inexplicably sad.

Saskia was stunned for a long time.

She wasn't hesitating; she had just never seen Nathaniel so upset.

Seeing her not respond for a while, Nathaniel let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Forget it. Pretend I didn't say anything."

But the next second, Saskia hugged him.

The autumn wind beat against the car windows, and everything around was quiet.

She felt no sadness, no worries, just the warmth spreading from her embrace.

"Is this okay?"

"A little tighter."

Nathaniel took a gentle breath. If it weren't right by her ear, Saskia wouldn't have heard it.

She tightened her embrace, and as if in response, Nathaniel held her tighter, as if trying to merge her into his very being.

When they parted at her apartment building, Saskia looked at him for a moment and said, "Why don't you stay over tonight? There's a guest room. It's no trouble to have one more person."

As soon as she said it, she felt nervous.

Saskia hadn't thought it through.

She just felt that Nathaniel, standing by the car watching her leave, looked too lonely and desolate.

She didn't want him to leave alone.

Before Nathaniel could respond, Saskia hurried to his side, pulling him inside.

For a moment, Nathaniel seemed to forget to resist, and this tall man was easily led into her home.

Saskia peeked into the bedroom. Benjamin was already asleep.

He was curled up in the blankets, his little face flushed.

She quietly took out an extra blanket from the closet, closed the door softly, and made up the guest bed for Nathaniel. "You can sleep here tonight."

Nathaniel didn't refuse.

The simple bed didn't bother him; he never had high demands for such things.

But in the middle of the night, Nathaniel fell ill.
