Chapter 545 With a Do-or-Die Determination

If Charles was on the hunt for someone to take the reins, he could snag one in a heartbeat.

Oscar smelled a trap. Outta nowhere, Mackenzie rolled back into the scene.

Mackenzie, looking all flustered, blurted out, "Oscar, things are going south in Serenea. Charles rang me up and told me to fetch you. I get it, you wanna stick around with Pearl. But if it wasn't for Charles saving your hide and looking out for you, you wouldn't be standing here all chill."

Mackenzie had a point.

But ever since he came to, he'd been neck-deep in Serenea's mess.

He did think about giving himself one last year, but Pearl spotted him.

"Hold up."

Oscar just couldn't shake it off.

Mackenzie stayed quiet, waiting it out.

Given how tight Oscar and Pearl were, Oscar would definitely make sure to say goodbye if he had to bounce.

Even though Charles said to bring Oscar back, he never said to force him.

Oscar then headed to Pearl.

Hearing Oscar and Mackenzie chat, Pearl chimed in, "If you're going back to Serenea, I'm coming too. I'm done waiting around for you."

She'd waited five long years, suffering solo, and she wasn't about to go through that again.

No matter what, she wanted to face it all with Oscar.

Oscar knew what Pearl was thinking, but Serenea was a hot mess, and dragging Pearl along was a no-go. He didn't want to risk it.

"Pearl, you and Christopher are here with me now, and I still want you to give me a sweet little daughter. Don't stress, this time I won't let anything happen to me. Wait for me in Willow Creek, okay? If I don't make it back, raise Christopher right."

If it wasn't for Charles, Oscar would've been fish food in the Eldorians river ages ago.

This time, if he had to lay down his life, it was to pay Charles back.

But it was brutal for Pearl.

He'd promised to always keep Pearl close, and never hide anything from her, wanting to be a real family.

"Oscar, what the hell are you talking about? Not coming back? You better come back to me!" Pearl yelled, losing it.

She was a mess, tears streaming down her face.

Oscar hugged her, and Pearl pounded his chest with her fists. "I was a war correspondent for five years, and I was never scared. Oscar, you're selling me short. I wanna face it with you, but you won't let me. You always make choices for me, never asking what I think. I hate you for that. If you don't come back this time, I'm telling you, I'll remarry, and Christopher won't have your last name anymore!"

She was hurting, but she couldn't blame Oscar. Oscar had his reasons for saving her back then. She just felt it was unfair; she hadn't done anything wrong, so why was fate so harsh on her?

"Alright, if I don't make it back, you can remarry. I won't hold it against you. Heck, I'd be happy knowing the guy is someone who treats you right and someone you can count on. Pearl, it just sucks that I've got so much on my plate in this life."

Even if Charles wasn't his real dad, he owed him big time for saving his life.

Pearl was pissed, feeling all sorts of ways, but hearing Oscar say that just made her feel worse.

She cupped Oscar's face. "I get that you've got a lot on your shoulders, so this time, I wanna be by your side. Oscar, take me with you."

"I swear I won't slow you down. If anything goes down, I can handle it. You're my husband, and we've got a kid. We should face stuff together!"

Oscar saw the hope in Pearl's eyes. He remembered all the promises he'd made to her and the look on her face now.

In the end, he couldn't say no.

He hugged Pearl and kissed her. "Alright, I'll take you with me. Stick by my side, and no matter what, I'll keep you safe."

Even if he had to die, he wouldn't let Pearl go down with him.

But since they were heading to Serenea, they had to let Louis know first. Louis wasn't cool with Pearl going to Serenea. "Oscar's going back to handle business. If you go with him and something happens, what about Christopher?"

Oscar wasn't going back for a vacation; he was going to deal with serious stuff. Serenea was a mess, just like Eldorians was at the start. Eldorians had him, and he recognized Pearl because of the cross bracelet she wore.

But what did Serenea have?

Even Charles wasn't a fan of Pearl, let alone anyone else.

If things went south, Oscar could escape alone. If he took Pearl, he'd have to look out for her too.

"Christopher's with Dad now. Maybe we're being selfish, but no matter what, we should stick together as a couple. And we're ready for this, nothing's gonna happen." Pearl was dead set on sticking with Oscar through this.

This way, Charles wouldn't have a reason to come after them again, and they could finally be together.

Once Pearl made up her mind, no one could change it.

But for Louis, he couldn't lose Pearl. They'd just reunited, and he couldn't let anything happen to her.

"I'll go with you. No matter what, at least there'll be someone to watch your back. I'll ask Giovanni for backup. Oscar, you better get things done this time. If you die like five years ago, I'll find your bones and grind them to dust. And Christopher won't have your last name anymore!"

They were definitely siblings; Louis's last words were just like Pearl's.

Oscar couldn't help but laugh. "Grinding my bones to dust is something that happens after I'm dead."

'How would I know what happens after death?'

But as soon as he said that, Pearl shot him a fierce glare. "Oscar, are you going with a death wish?"
