Chapter 686 Not Classy

After finishing the grilled fish, Daryl wanted to hang out on the first floor a bit longer, but Desiree looked exhausted.

She said, "I didn't sleep well last night. I need to go back and catch up on some sleep, or I'll be too tired."

Seeing the dark circles under her eyes, Daryl, even though he didn't want her to leave, nodded. "I'll take you back. You need to rest."

They didn't have time to pick out skincare products, so he bought every set from the brand suitable for middle-aged people, including individual serums.

The sales clerk's smile was huge. "Sir, you are so generous. These sets are more than enough for three people."

"These are for your mom. I don't know which set she would like, so I bought them all. She can try them out herself," Daryl said, his eyes on Desiree.

The sales clerks got the hint.

One even went up to Desiree and said, "Your fiancé is really great. He's so considerate to your family."

"He's not my fiancé." Desiree shook her head. "Charge these sets to my card."

After all, they were for her mom.

She and Daryl were just friends, and it didn't make sense to spend so much of his money.

The sales clerk was surprised, realizing it was one-sided affection from the man.

But for them, as long as the products were sold and counted towards their performance, it didn't matter whose card was used.

She then took out the card machine, and Desiree quickly paid the bill.

When Daryl came over with the packaged sets, he immediately noticed the receipt in Desiree's hand. "Why did you pay for it yourself?"

"These are for my mom, so I should pay for them, especially since there are so many." Desiree couldn't carry them all by herself.

She picked up one large box and handed the other to Daryl. "Could you help me with this?"

Then she walked straight out.

Daryl quickly followed with the bag. "Desiree, how much did you just spend? I'll transfer it to you. I promised to buy gifts for your mom, and now you ended up paying. That's not right."

"Why do you want to buy gifts for my mom?" Desiree stopped and asked him.

Without waiting for Daryl to reply, she answered herself, "Because in my mom's eyes, you're her future son-in-law. It's normal for a son-in-law to buy her things. But we're just pretending, and I can't get too involved and spend your money."

From the beginning, she had decided that there shouldn't be too much entanglement between them.

Moreover, she wasn't short of money.

Daryl was left speechless.

He couldn't argue against his own words about pretending, so he could only smile bitterly. "Neither of us is short of money, so there's no need to be so calculative."

"Even family keeps clear accounts. Not being short of money doesn't mean I can use your money casually. Let's get in the car quickly, these things are too heavy for me to carry." Desiree quickened her pace.

They had parked their car in the underground garage, and from a distance, they could hear Harold's voice.

He was trying to reason with someone. "Yeah, I rear-ended your car, and I've taken photos. Let's just go through insurance."

"No way, you think you can just go through insurance? I don't have time for that. My car is so expensive, and you should compensate me $10,000, not a penny less." The guy was being a jerk. Then he added, "Are you in a hurry? Driving like that, are you blind?"

"I'll take responsibility, but please watch your words," Harold said, trying to keep his cool.

Desiree watched from a distance, feeling uneasy.

She suddenly remembered when the company had just started, Harold had to go out socializing every night to get business and investment.

Facing clients, he must have been like this, no matter how impatient he was, he had to endure it.

Desiree's mom was wrong about one thing: Harold never intended to use her. Otherwise, instead of spending time with clients, he could have asked the Sandvik Family for help.

"You've damaged my car, and I can't even say a few words to you? You and your wife must be really unreasonable!" The man retorted.

"We're not married," Harold replied.

"If you're not married, then you must be lovers. Otherwise, why are you walking hand in hand? I can tell you two are not decent, probably sleeping together every night," The man shouted.

Just as Harold was about to lose his temper and call the police, the man suddenly turned to Daryl.

His attitude changed completely, and he greeted obsequiously, "Hi, Mr. Fields, what are you doing here?"

"I'm here with my friend to buy some things. What's going on here?" Daryl walked over.

He glanced at Harold, chuckled, and then took out a bank card from his bag. "I'll pay for him. The money on this card is more than enough to fix your car, even to buy a new one. Let's just drop this matter."

"Alright, since Mr. Fields said so, I won't hold it against them. Mr. Fields, you're so generous!" The man gave a thumbs up, implying, "The difference between people is so great."

"How much is on that card? I'll pay you back," Harold said coldly.

He believed in taking responsibility for his actions, but the man's insulting words needed to be addressed.

However, Daryl's intervention had changed the situation.

It now seemed like he was so short of money that he needed Daryl's help.

Especially with this happening in front of Desiree, what man could stand losing face in front of the woman he loved?

That was exactly Daryl's intention. He looked Harold up and down. "No need. That's my company's employee. Mr. Lewis, in the early stages of your startup, you should save your money."

Then he leaned closer to Harold, patted his shoulder, and whispered, "Don't take women to eat street food in the future. It's embarrassing and not classy."
