Chapter 720 Revelation of Truth

Hearing Harold's words, Ember freaked out. All of Harold's bending over backward lately was because she was supposedly sick. If he found out the truth, it would be a total disaster, and he'd probably get back with Desiree.

Just thinking about that made Ember's head spin. She blurted out, "Harold, let me explain."

"The facts are right here. What's there to explain? Mom, you're an adult, why are you acting like a kid?" Harold said, clearly frustrated. "This isn't something to joke about."

The medical records were crystal clear, and he'd even talked to experts. This illness couldn't be ignored.

If Ember had surgery and got treatment now, she could at least live a normal life after recovery. But if she kept stalling, even surgery wouldn't help much, and she'd be bedridden.

He couldn't just sit back and do nothing.

"I'm doing this for your own good. If you could make me worry less, I wouldn't have to lie like this." Realizing her explanation was going nowhere, Ember tried to play the mom card to guilt Harold, like she always did.

She went on and on, but Harold didn't react the way she expected. He just stood by the bed, looking at her with sad eyes. Finally, he said, "Mom, haven't you already gotten everything you wanted? Please, follow the doctor's advice and get treatment."

That's when Ember had a lightbulb moment. She thought Harold only knew she hadn't had surgery; he didn't know she wasn't sick at all.

Perfect. She could keep using this lie to make Harold do what she wanted. Clearing her throat, Ember said, "When you completely cut ties with Desiree, I'll accept treatment."

"We've already finalized the divorce. We have nothing to do with each other now," Harold said, trying to stay calm.

In front of Ember, he had to say this. Otherwise, if she got mad, she'd totally ignore her health.

But Ember shot back, "As long as I see you still going to her, I won't be at ease and won't feel like getting treatment."

"In that case, I might as well remarry Desiree. After all, you know your own health condition. You've been in the hospital for so long and had several check-ups. If you don't get treatment, you won't live long." In his desperation, Harold had to lay it on thick.

If Ember wasn't going to live long, why should he care so much? Hearing this, Ember was stunned. Her go-to trick wasn't working today!

If Desiree and Harold got back together and had a kid, after what happened last time, Desiree would definitely be on guard. That would mean Ember could only watch helplessly as Desiree had the baby.

A baby was just an embryo in the mother's womb, but once it was born, it was a person. No matter how much Ember hated Desiree, she couldn't be that heartless.

Thinking of this, Ember said, "Harold, I'm your mother!"

"I know. If you weren't my mother, I wouldn't be here trying to persuade you to get treatment." Harold responded, still unmoved.

In the end, Ember gave in. "Fine, I promise you, I'll get treatment now. But you must cut ties with Desiree. If I find out you two met, I'll stop the medication immediately," she said.

But as soon as Harold left, Domingo walked in and asked, "Ember, are you really going to get treatment?"

"Sick people get treatment to prolong their lives. Healthy people getting treatment are just asking for trouble. I just said that to fool him," Ember laughed.

Domingo initially wanted to mention that Harold had already paid the medical fees, but then he realized it didn't matter. Ember wasn't actually sick and wouldn't go through with the treatment anyway.

And if they refunded Harold's money, it would be a dead giveaway that something was up.

After mulling it over, Domingo came up with a plan. "How about this, I'll bring you the medicine every day, but you don't take it or get the IV. If your son asks, neither of us will be in trouble."

"Fine, I'll listen to you. Domingo, you really are a smart doctor." Ember was still cheerful, completely unaware of the storm brewing.

Meanwhile, on Desiree's end, she went straight home after getting off the plane and saw Daryl at the door. As usual, he was loaded down with big bags and was super attentive to her parents.

Liam and Tessa, however, had shifted from their usual attitude, being polite but distant.

Liam said, "Daryl, you don't need to bring us these things."

Tessa added, "We appreciate the thought, but you should take them back."

Hearing this, Daryl got the hint. They didn't want him around anymore and definitely didn't want him as a son-in-law.

The more he tried to make amends, the more resolute Tessa's attitude became. She continued, "You should go back."

"Mrs. Sandvik, if there's anything I'm not doing well, please tell me directly. I'm willing to change. Please don't just send me away," Daryl said.

He said, "If you won't tell me anything and just want to get rid of me, then I won't go."

"Daryl." A clear voice suddenly came from behind. It was Desiree.

Daryl, hearing her voice, turned his head and reached for Desiree's hand.

Desiree pulled back and asked him, "Did you spread those rumors online?"

Daryl replied, "I don't even know what rumors you're talking about."

"The rumors about us getting married. Daryl, if you did it, just admit it. Don't treat everyone like fools. Even if you don't say it, we can find out," Desiree said, not believing him for a second.

On the way back, she had pieced a lot together.

Why did Daryl always show up at such convenient times? So many coincidences couldn't just be coincidences; someone had to be pulling the strings.

Daryl wasn't the innocent guy she had once thought he was.

"Desiree, do we really have to come to this? Don't you have any trust in me?" Daryl tried to dodge the question and change the subject.

Desiree's lips curled into a mocking smile.
