Chapter 622 Even Fate Can Make Mistakes

"Janetta, don't freak me out," Damian said, stepping closer. He wanted to hold her hand but hesitated, worried he'd scare her.

Janetta giggled, "I'm not Janetta, I'm Janie."

She got out of bed, walked over to the sofa, and grabbed a cup of water from the table.

Damian quickly snatched it away, not knowing how long it had been there or who had drunk from it.

Janetta stared at him, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Damian fetched a fresh cup and gently said, "Here, this one's for you. You want some water, right? Let me pour it for you."

"Water, Janie wants water." Her childlike behavior seemed genuine, and Damian's heart ached.

He deeply regretted not stopping Savannah back then; it was his fault Janetta ended up like this.

Tenderly brushing the hair from Janetta's forehead, Damian decided to keep her by his side.

With that in mind, he immediately told his assistant to make arrangements to take Janetta away before Pearl could.

Unexpectedly, the assistant and Pearl ended up arguing in the doctor's office.

When Damian got the news and rushed over, he saw the evaluation report on the table, and his heart sank.

Pearl shouted, "Damian, haven't you done enough to Janetta? You still want to keep her with you? Don't you think you're being unreasonable?"

If it weren't for her own health issues, Pearl would have punched Damian.

Damian picked up the evaluation report, confirming his worst fears.

He wished it were all fake, but the report clearly stated that Janetta had lost her mind.

She was driven insane by excessive stress.

Pearl snatched the report and mocked him, "If you had let her go earlier, would she have ended up like this?"

"I'm sorry," Damian said weakly.

It seemed like saying it would lessen his guilt, but it felt heavy, especially seeing the disdain in Pearl's eyes.

Pearl thought he was up to his tricks again and coldly exposed him, "Damian, no need to scheme anymore. I'll take care of Janetta myself."

"Mrs. Brown, have you looked at your own condition? You need someone to take care of you, let alone Janetta," Damian said.

As Pearl's pregnancy progressed, her mobility became increasingly limited.

She had come in a wheelchair today, making her unsuitable to care for Janetta.

But even so, she had to fight for it.

Clearing her throat, Pearl spoke slowly, "I can hire someone to take care of her. Whatever she wants to do or eat, I'll arrange it."

Damian wasn't backing down and retorted, "Anyone can hire help. Do you think you're the only one with money, Mrs. Brown? But I believe personal care shows more sincerity."

"Are you saying I'm insincere?" Pearl snapped.

The tension between them was thick, and the doctor knocked on the table to remind them, "The patient should decide who she wants to go with. Given her current condition, she needs someone she is willing to be with, or it could worsen her illness."

Damian looked at Pearl, feeling uncertain.

Janetta had long wanted to leave him, but he never let go. Maybe deep down, Janetta also wanted to stay away from him.

Pearl smiled, taking the evaluation report, and said, "Mr. Clark, sorry. Oh, by the way, don't contact us anymore. Just pretend Janetta doesn't exist."

She was confident that Janetta would go with her.

Damian watched her leave, frowning.

The assistant quietly reminded him, "Mr. Clark, if it doesn't work openly, we can always do it secretly. Then..."

Before he could finish, Damian shot him a glare, and he obediently shut his mouth.

Damian didn't want to use any shady methods anymore; he wanted Janetta to stay with him willingly.

After getting some advice from the doctor, Damian went out and bought a small cake.

When he got back, he saw Pearl trying to feed Janetta, who was refusing, while Pearl patiently coaxed her.

Damian walked over, took away the food in front of Janetta, and placed the small cake on the table.

Janetta's eyes lit up at the sight of the cake, and she clapped her hands, exclaiming, "Cake!"

Damian was pleased but pretended to be surprised, "You like cake? I'll buy you cake every day, okay?"

Janetta nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, cake! Janie wants lots of cake."

Pearl pulled Damian aside and reminded him, "If you do this, she won't eat properly."

Damian chuckled, "Don't worry about that. I'll make sure she eats on time."

He then returned to Janetta's side like a victor, carefully wiping her mouth.

"Janie, do you want to go home with me? I'm Damian. Or do you want to go home with Pearl?"

Damian understood Janetta. The doctor had said that in her condition, even if she was mad, her preferences wouldn't change. She would act like a child, insisting on what she liked.

Damian had hit the mark.

Janie grabbed his hand, saying, "Janie goes with Damian."

Pearl was anxious and said, "Janetta, he's a bad man."

Janetta ignored her, eating the cake and smiling foolishly at Damian.

And so, Janetta was taken away by Damian, and Pearl could only wish her well in her heart.

To take care of Janetta, Damian bought a villa in the suburbs and installed a playground.

He planned to raise Janetta like a child. But trouble arose on the first day.

Something triggered Janetta, and she locked herself in a room, crying and screaming, even throwing things.

Worried she might hurt herself, Damian climbed up to the third floor and entered the room from the balcony.

The room was a mess, but Janetta was nowhere to be seen.

Damian searched for a long time and finally found her in the closet.

"Janie." Damian didn't dare speak loudly, afraid of scaring her.

She didn't respond.

Damian called again, "Janie."

Janetta looked up, saw him, and immediately tried to close the closet door in fear.

Damian hugged her, and she bit his shoulder.

The physical pain was sharp, but the ache in his heart was even greater.

"Don't be afraid, Janie. I'm here," Damian said softly.

After a while, sensing that Janetta had let go, he turned to see that she had fallen asleep. He breathed a sigh of relief.

Carrying her back to bed, Damian contacted the doctor to ask about the cause of such episodes, knowing he had much to learn.

Fortunately, after that day, Janetta didn't have any more episodes. She trailed Damian wherever he went.

Pearl, worried about Janetta, had Oscar take her to the villa.

From a distance, she saw Janetta holding onto Damian's shirt, clutching a stuffed toy in her other hand.

Damian patiently fed her, but Janetta didn't like vegetables, spitting them out as soon as he fed her.

Pearl sighed, "Do you think I should have encouraged her to leave back then? Maybe she wouldn't have met Henry."

Oscar shook his head and said, "It's her fate. Even if she had left, something else would have brought them together."

Pearl looked up at him and asked, "So, even fate can make mistakes, putting two people who don't love each other together, right?"
