Chapter 270 It's You

He dropped to one knee, and everyone behind him followed. The pressure was intense.

Kittie, scared, stepped back. Pearl was shocked too.

Kittie, usually confident, felt her arrogance fade. "Oscar, what are you doing? Get up!"

Oscar kept his head down. "Kittie, please let me have Pearl!"

He was tough with others but always gentle with Pearl's family.

Despite Kittie's disapproval of their marriage, seeing Oscar humble himself made her rethink. She was torn.

Maria chimed in, "Kittie, Pearl hasn't divorced yet, right?"

Kittie, embarrassed, replied, "She's about to. I didn't expect this."

Maria, understanding, said, "It's okay. This gentleman seems sincere. If there's a chance to fix things, we won't push. It's up to Pearl. If it's not meant to be, we won't force it."

The Thompsons stood up to leave since they didn't want to get involved in the mess.

Kittie, feeling guilty, said, "Are you leaving? I'm sorry for the trouble."

"It's fine, no need to see us out. Just handle this," the Thompson family said, looking scared of the situation. They didn't want any trouble.

Kittie apologized as she saw them out.

Seeing the scene when she returned, Kittie lost her temper: "Get up, everyone has left."

"If you're upset with me, I'll kneel until you're satisfied," Oscar said.

Kittie, seeing his sincerity, couldn't stay mad. "If you knew this would happen, why didn't you treat Pearl well from the start?"

Pearl added, "Have you thought about my feelings?"

Oscar looked up. "What will it take to make you happy?"

A relationship died out slowly, when it was done, it was done for good.

Pearl, feeling nothing, replied, "Love should be mutual. I've repaid my debt to you. Please don't bother me anymore."

Kittie was surprised. She thought her daughter was dragging out the divorce, but it was Oscar.

Before she could react, Pearl was already leaving.

"Pearl!" Oscar stood up and followed her.

Pearl, expecting this, turned back, her expression cold. "Do you think being nicer will change my mind? I might have been moved when I was younger, but not anymore. I feel nothing."

Oscar, not angry, softly called, "Pearl."

"The marriage certificate is torn. Legally, we're still married, but I consider us divorced. If you don't want a divorce, fine; I don't care about that paper. Just stay away from me and don't disrupt my life. If you ever want a divorce, mail the agreement. Lawyers can handle it. I've said all I need to. Mr. Brown, let's keep things strictly professional from now on."

Oscar's face darkened, his expression complex.

Pearl didn't care how harsh her words sounded.

Once she decided to leave, she was firm; no amount of sweet talk could bring her back.

She turned and calmly left the restaurant.

Oscar stayed rooted to the spot.

As Pearl exited, the weight on her heart lifted.

'Leaving Oscar was the right choice,' she thought.

Despite his declarations of love, how much of it was real?

Trusting Oscar's love would only lead to more hurt.

"Mr. Brown, aren't you going after her?" Harold, seeing Oscar stunned, was more anxious than Oscar.

Oscar replied, "She hates my attempts to keep her. If I chase her, she'll hate me more."

"So what now? Are you really getting divorced?" Harold asked.

Oscar, determined, said coldly, "Isn't Horizon Network supposed to interview me?"

"What?" Harold was confused.

Oscar didn't explain but thought of Kittie in the private room. "Have someone take Kittie home first."

He had just regained some of Kittie's trust; he couldn't lose it again.

--

Pearl returned home and paused in front of Jeffery's door.

She remembered Barbara saying he didn't let anyone touch the strawberries he grew.

He cherished them but never ate them himself. It was odd that he didn't eat them but gave them to her.

She considered knocking to ask but, seeing the time, thought he might not be home.

Pearl hesitated and then decided to head to her own apartment.

As she unlocked the door, she saw Jeffery returning.

"Jeffery," she called out.

Jeffery, looking unwell, immediately raised his head at her voice.

Seeing it was Pearl, he quickly took out a wet wipe to clean his hands. "You're back."

Pearl noticed his face was unusually pale. "Are you feeling unwell?" she asked.

Jeffery finished wiping his hands and tossed the wipe into the trash. "No."

As he approached, Pearl caught a whiff of blood mixed with disinfectant. "You don't look well."

Jeffery smiled gently. "I had a busy day at work, maybe just tired. Rest will help."

Pearl noticed a fresh cut on his wrist. Before she could say anything, Jeffery said, "I'm going inside."

Pearl hesitated. "Alright."

Jeffery opened his door and went in, closing it behind him.

Pearl stood at her door, deep in thought. She had wanted to ask about the strawberries, but now it would have to wait. She went inside her apartment.

Around midnight, Pearl was awakened by a noise from next door.

The soundproofing was good, but the noise was loud. Was someone searching for something?

She listened carefully and realized the noise was coming from Jeffery's room.

Could he be getting robbed? Pearl immediately got out of bed.

Approaching the door, she listened closely, but the noise had stopped.

Curious, she opened her door a crack to see what was happening next door.

To her surprise, she saw Barbara emerging from his room.

Barbara's clothes were disheveled, her hair a mess. Sensing someone watching, she turned and locked eyes with Pearl.

"It's you!"

"It's you!"
