Chapter 898 White-eyed Wolf
Jeffery thought for a moment after hearing her out. "I'll go with you. Don't be so quick to refuse. You know what happened last time you went back. If it weren't for me, who knows if you could have even left the Hill family."
Lyra couldn't argue, remembering Aaron's aggressive behavior last time.
She took a deep breath and smiled, "I'll be troubling you again."
Jeffery gave a faint smile.
True to his word, Jeffery took her to Aaron's house that very day.
Lyra paused at the door. "You stay here. If things go south, you can come in."
Jeffery glanced at her phone. "We'll stay in touch by phone."
Lyra showed him her phone. She had already set him as her emergency contact, ensuring he would be the fastest to respond if anything happened.
Lyra had a key, and after preparing herself, she pushed the door open and walked in.
Heath's face immediately fell. "You have the nerve to come back? I thought you were dead out there. Aaron said you didn't answer his calls and wouldn't give him money. Now that you're in a big hospital with a promising future, you want to kick us to the curb, huh?"
"I didn't come back for that. Where's Aaron?"
Elowen emerged from the kitchen, hesitating as she looked at Lyra. She seemed to want to talk to Lyra and express some closeness, but Heath's glare stopped her.
Elowen nervously wiped her hands. "He's in his room. He couldn't reach you these past few days, so he's been in a bad mood. Don't blame him; you know how he is. He'll grow out of it."
Lyra couldn't help but laugh at the familiar words. "He's twenty-three. If he hasn't grown up yet, when will he?"
Elowen mumbled in agreement.
Seeing this, Lyra felt a pang of disappointment and frustration, despite being prepared for it. She was the Hill family's adopted daughter and had never been valued much. Heath always favored Aaron, and Elowen was too weak to defy her husband and son. But at least they hadn't treated her this poorly before.
Everything changed after that car accident.
She took a deep breath. "I'm here to see him. Can you call him out?"
Heath cursed under his breath.
Elowen nodded and called out, knocking on the door. She had barely knocked once when a furious voice came from inside.
"Stop bothering me! I said I don't want to eat. Leave me alone."
Elowen stepped back, looking at Lyra awkwardly. "See? That's how he is. Maybe you can talk to him. He might be willing to see you."
Lyra didn't bother correcting her.
Aaron wasn't willing to see her; he was willing to see her money.
She stepped forward. "Forget it, I'll do it. Aaron, come out. It's me."
The door slammed open, and Aaron sat in his wheelchair, his face twisted with anger. "Lyra, you bitch. I didn't come looking for you, and you still showed up."
Seeing her silent, he sneered.
"I know why you're here. It's because of that matter, isn't it?"
Seeing the smug look on Aaron's face, Lyra's knuckles tightened, and her lips turned pale from biting. "What good does it do you? Exposing me, what do you gain?"
In her mind, as long as she was the Hill family's adopted daughter, she was tied to them. Their fortunes were intertwined.
This was one reason Lyra had hesitated to cut ties before.
They had raised her, and she did bear some responsibility for the car accident, so she had tried to compensate them as much as she could.
But Aaron didn't see it that way. "Of course, it benefits me. Look, you're back, aren't you? Regretting not giving me that $200,000? If you had given it to me earlier, none of this would have happened."
"You!"
"Now, it's $500,000. Not a penny less. Otherwise, I have more dirt on you."
A blatant threat!
Lyra tasted blood in her mouth; her lower lip was bleeding from her bite, but she didn't care. All she felt was anger and overwhelming disappointment.
This was her family.
Twenty years of family, never giving her anything, only taking.
Lyra thought of the occasional glimpses she had of other families.
Other families were always harmonious, with loving parents and children. Why was her family like this? What had she done wrong?
"I won't give it to you. Forget it. If you don't take down the trending topic, I'll find another way. I'll take it to court if I have to, and make you return all the money I've given you over the years."
Lyra wasn't without a backbone.
The Hill family had been heartless first, so she had no reason to hold onto any sense of obligation.
She'd rather go down fighting.
Heath threw a cup at her feet, the shards exploding and cutting her leg. The sharp edges left a long trail of blood down her calf.
Lyra cried out, looking down at the blood. She nearly fainted.
Heath pointed at her, cursing. "We raised you for twenty years, and this is how you repay us? Fine, go ahead and sue. Let's see if you can walk out that door today."
Lyra braced herself, the pain intense, but she refused to show weakness, especially in front of them.
She pressed on her leg and straightened up. "Then watch me walk out."
Heath was furious, not expecting Lyra to stand up to him.
"You dare!"
Lyra quickly walked towards the door, but Elowen grabbed her after a few steps.
She turned back, her eyes stinging, her vision blurring with tears. "Mom, even you?"
Elowen avoided her gaze. "We're doing this for your good. You know Aaron's temper. If you leave, he'll only get worse. I can't stop him. You might as well give him what he wants. It's just $500,000..."
Elowen thought it was just $500,000. Lyra was working at a big hospital now; she could get the money somehow.
Even if her salary wasn't that high, she could borrow it.
Look at before, when she wasn't working at the hospital, she still gave them a lot of money. So this time, it should be no big deal.
Hearing this, Lyra's heart turned cold, and any lingering attachment vanished. She shook off Elowen's hand. "$500,000? Do you think $500,000 is a small amount? Or do you not know how I got the money before? I saved every penny, eating only one meal a day, to give it to you!"
