Chapter 714 Forced Marriage
"Desiree, do you really not like me at all?" Daryl asked, still not ready to give up. "Just a little bit would be enough."
He had tried everything he could think of. But he still couldn't get through to Desiree.
"And we've already slept together. I genuinely want to take responsibility for you. I don't want to disrespect you, Desiree. Think it over before you decide. We did make love!" Daryl added.
"What era are you living in? I really can't understand your mindset." Desiree was beyond frustrated.
The more he clung to her, the more determined she became. They wouldn't even be able to stay friends in the future.
She patiently explained one last time, "That night is in the past. Let's not keep bringing it up. According to what you said, if we've had sex, we must be together. Then Harold and I have a child together, so does that mean we have to be together for life?"
Daryl clenched his fists, his teeth grinding. "Desiree, don't say things to provoke me."
The thought of them getting back together made him feel terrible.
Desiree corrected him, "I'm not trying to provoke you, I'm just giving an example. You should leave now and stop knocking on my door. I don't want what just happened to repeat itself."
"Desiree! Are you really so heartless that you won't even offer me a cup of tea and just kick me out? At least let me sit and rest for a while. I've been standing outside for so long, so I'm really tired." Daryl lowered his stance even further.
A cup of tea was nothing, but Desiree didn't want to give him any hope. To Daryl, a small gesture might appear as the beginning of a compromise that could lead to more concessions.
Better to rip the band-aid off quickly, she thought firmly. "No, you don't lack a cup of tea. I'll see you out."
Daryl watched as she opened the door. The moment the cold wind blew in, his heart grew colder and colder.
Before leaving, he asked one last question, "Desiree, were you serious about what you just said? Are we really not even going to be friends?"
"At least for now, we shouldn't be in contact. When you get married, I'll send a generous gift." Desiree's meaning was clear.
Whenever he could let go of all this, they could talk about being friends again. Daryl gave her one last look and turned to leave. He didn't need a gift from Desiree for his wedding. All he wanted was Desiree herself.
If she didn't want to marry him, he could let her parents make it happen. Daryl first went to the bank to withdraw money, then went to a nearby mall and found a jewelry store to buy some jewelry.
"Sir, where is your fiancée?" The clerk was puzzled to see him alone. "Usually, couples come together to buy jewelry."
"She's busy and couldn't come. I'll buy it myself. I want something heavy and luxurious," Daryl stated his requirements.
He wanted something big and flashy to show Liam and Tessa his sincerity. The clerk showed him a few options. Necklaces and earrings were easy enough, but when it came to bracelets, the clerk threw him a curveball, "Sir, do you know your fiancée's wrist size?"
Daryl and Desiree had barely held hands, so how would he know that?
"Do you have any adjustable bracelets?" he asked.
"We do, but the styles are pretty limited. The popular ones come in specific sizes," the clerk said, giving him a skeptical look. If he wasn't paying attention to his fiancée, why was he splurging on jewelry? But if he was attentive, how could he not know her wrist size?
They were supposed to be engaged, even if they hadn't lived together, they should have at least held hands. But they seemed like complete strangers.
"No problem, I'll take this one." Daryl picked up the heaviest bracelet and placed it on the tray. "And a tiara."
The Fields Family wasn't short on money. He hoped that his extravagant choices would convince Liam and Tessa of his sincerity.
By the time he left the jewelry store, the clerk's face was stiff from smiling. This single purchase had hit her monthly sales target.
Next, Daryl bought some more gifts, then drove to the Sandvik Family. Seeing him with bags of stuff, Tessa was surprised. "Daryl, why bring so many things?"
"Mr. Sandvik, Mrs. Sandvik, I'm not just here for a visit today. I want to set the engagement. These are my gifts for you." Daryl laid out the gifts one by one.
He had prepared gifts for both Liam and Tessa, along with a box of cash and gold jewelry, which glittered brightly.
Liam and Tessa exchanged a glance, momentarily at a loss for words.
Daryl had clearly put thought into this. He genuinely loved Desiree, and they would surely have a good life together after marriage. But marriage was a personal matter. Even if they were satisfied with Daryl, they couldn't make the decision for Desiree.
"Daryl, we appreciate your gesture, but you should take these things back." Tessa politely declined with a smile. "Spend more time with Desiree. Marriage shouldn't be rushed. I only have one daughter, and I want to give her a grand wedding."
"But Mrs. Sandvik, Desiree and I have already made love. I want to give her a wedding as soon as possible. If we delay, I'm afraid we'll end up getting married when she's already pregnant," Daryl said earnestly.
As long as he could win over them, he wasn't worried about Desiree's agreement. She had such a good relationship with her parents that she would surely compromise to avoid worrying them.
Tessa was even more shocked. Just a few days ago, Desiree had shown no interest in dating, and now she had slept with him? And if something like that had happened, why hadn't Desiree told her?
"Mr. Sandvik, Mrs. Sandvik, Desiree is shy. And if we get engaged soon, it will also make Harold give up. He still hasn't stopped harassing her," Daryl continued to persuade them.
But today, Liam and Tessa didn't agree as quickly as he had hoped. He talked until his mouth was dry, but Tessa was still hesitant.
