Chapter 39 He's Just Using You
She leaned against the wall, feeling extremely uncomfortable, her face very pale, constantly retching, but nothing came out.
Oscar, seeing this, nervously stepped forward to support her. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
Pearl pushed his hand away, tears wetting her eyes. "You just said you wanted a divorce, why are you saying these things now?"
Observing her pale face, Oscar softened his tone, "Let's go home first, we won't talk about this now." He held her waist and led her outside.
Pearl didn't refuse. She didn't want to argue with Oscar at the front door, in case Kittie and Evans saw it and worried about her. Her marriage was unhappy, but she didn't want Kittie and Evans to worry too much.
When they reached the car, Oscar gazed at Pearl's distressed face, sighed, and then hugged her. "Pearl, what should I do with you?"
Pearl leaned against his shoulder, her nose tingling. She had become so fragile all of a sudden. Perhaps because she could get some emotional response from Oscar, she became more willful. Because what she needed from him, she wanted more, and she wasn't as sensible as before.
"Oscar," Pearl muffled against his chest. "Thank you for everything you've done for me."
Oscar gently patted her back. "What have I done for you that you need to thank me for?"
Pearl said, "Thank you for coming to my house, letting my mom and dad know that I'm doing well, so they don't have to worry about me. And thank you for spending two million dollars to save my family. I will always remember these things."
Then, she added, "And thank you for saving me."
Her words carried a hidden meaning, but Oscar didn't notice.
His earlier displeasure dissipated after her comforting words.
He held Pearl tightly, perhaps also afraid of losing her, and said, "I'm your husband, and this is what I should do."
Pearl's lips curled slightly, and she lowered her eyes. She knew that everything wasn't something she deserved, but something that came with a price.
Oscar handed Pearl a bottle of water, and after she drank, he asked, "Are you feeling better now?"
Pearl nodded. "Much better."
"Is your stomach hurting?" Oscar asked again.
Pearl replied, "Not hurting. I'm not sure. I feel a bit nauseous, probably ate something bad."
Oscar fastened her seatbelt and lowered the seat. "Rest for a while, we'll be home soon."
Pearl nodded and obediently lay down. She might have been a little tired, as she fell asleep in no time.
It was Oscar who woke her up when they arrived home, but she felt very exhausted.
After taking a shower, Pearl fell asleep again and slept until dawn.
When she woke up, she was almost late for work.
Oscar didn't wake her up, probably wanting her to sleep a little longer and arrive at the office later. But this was the first time Pearl had encountered such a situation. She had never been late before.
Pearl quickly washed up, didn't even want breakfast, and wanted to arrive at the company on time.
Going downstairs, she saw Hathaway busy in the kitchen, telling the maid, "This soup needs to be stewed well, pay attention to the heat. After it's done, I'll take it to the hospital for Haley."
Hathaway was fond of Haley, so it was natural for her to go visit Haley when she heard she was in the hospital.
After tidying up for a long time, Hathaway had several thermos flasks, all of which were to be taken to Haley.
When she came out and saw Pearl still at home, she said coldly, "Why are you still at home? It's so late, are you sleeping in?"
Pearl slowed her pace. "I'm going to The Brown Group now."
"You're just in time. I've stewed some tonics for you too." Hathaway told the maid, "Quickly bring the soup I cooked for Pearl."
Pearl felt a bit strange. Hathaway was so focused on Haley, would she still cook soup for her?
The maid brought the medicine over, and Pearl sniffed it, feeling nauseous again. Her whole body rejected it, so she asked the maid to take it away. "I can't drink this."
Seeing her refusal, Hathaway's face turned unpleasant. "Pearl, what's wrong with you? Drink it quickly."
The maid brought the medicine to Pearl again. The foul smell made Pearl unable to bear it. "I can't do it."
Pearl rushed to the bathroom, feeling extremely nauseous.
"Pearl!" Hathaway, seeing her heading to the bathroom, angrily said, "Is it that bad? You just don't want to drink it!"
Pearl felt extremely nauseous, and even after retching for a while, nothing came out. She washed her face before coming out.
Hathaway didn't force her to take the medicine again. She was busy going to see Haley, and with many things in her hands, she said, "Don't go to The Brown Group today. Help me take these things to see Haley. She's in the hospital, you should know. I'm sure Oscar has already been to see her."
Upon hearing this, Pearl pursed her lips. "I'm going to be late for work."
Hathaway looked at Pearl, her lips slightly curved. "If you go to The Brown Group, you might run into Oscar at the hospital. It's on the way."
This was not wrong. She was Oscar's wife and also his personal secretary.
She followed Hathaway to the hospital. As soon as Hathaway reached the door of the ward, her eyes welled up with tears. She pushed the door open and choked out, "Haley, oh you poor thing..."
"Hathaway."
Haley and Hathaway embraced each other, both with red eyes. Hathaway held her hand. "Haley, you've lost a lot of weight. It's only been a few days since we last met, why have you become like this? Why are you so upset?"
"I'm fine, Hathaway." Haley's face still looked a bit haggard. "I won't be like this in the future."
Hathaway asked with concern, "If you have something to say, tell me. Don't do anything foolish again. If something happens to you, I'll be very sad. I still hope you can marry Oscar."
Haley just shed tears without saying a word.
Standing at the ward entrance, watching them talk. Their relationship was so close that others might think they were mother and daughter. Pearl couldn't empathize; she just felt awkward standing there. She didn't see Oscar either.
Seeing Pearl there, Haley wiped her tears and said, "Hathaway, I want some water."
Hathaway immediately called Pearl, "Pearl, go get some water for Haley."
Pearl didn't want to stay there, so she went to get the water.
In the water area, Pearl saw Haley standing behind her in the mirror.
"Pearl, you're swallowing your pride to stay in the Brown family. Hathaway treats me as Oscar's wife. What are you in the Brown family?"
"I'm the wife on Oscar's marriage certificate?" Pearl replied calmly, not wanting to engage with her.
Haley's face changed, and she stopped Pearl. "Do you think Oscar can't let you go? He's just using you!"
