Chapter 657 Agreement

It took Daryl almost fifteen minutes to come out.

He looked exactly the same as when he went in, no clue if the deal was done or not.

Everyone was buzzing with guesses.

"I bet it didn't happen. You know how Mr. Lewis is. He's chill most of the time, but once he's made up his mind, forget about it."

"Who knows? Maybe it did go through."

"Why don't we bet on it?"

Until Harold made it official, all they could do was guess.

But Desiree had a different approach—she could just ask.

In the office, there was an unopened file on Harold's desk, with a pen that looked like it had just been used.

Desiree's heart skipped a beat.

'Could it be true? Did the deal go through?'

"Harold, did you agree to the deal with Daryl?" Desiree asked straight up.

Guessing would only make her more anxious.

Desiree liked to get straight to the point.

After all, it wasn't a huge deal. If the deal went through, it just meant she might see Daryl around the office, which she wasn't thrilled about.

Harold looked at her, then at the file. He didn't say a word and just tore it up.

Desiree was shocked. "You tore it up?"

"Yeah, it was the transfer deed for the Silverlight City property," Harold said calmly, like it was no big deal, "I didn't agree to it."

Desiree was even more stunned. She knew how valuable Silverlight City was. The company had just had a meeting about targeting Silverlight City as their next big move.

They were determined to get a piece of land there, no matter the cost.

This would not only help them break into the Silverlight City market but also boost the company's reputation—a win-win.

The only downside was the high auction price.

Harold was ready to spend billions, and now there was a transfer deed on the table, but he didn't want it.

Seeing how chill he was, Desiree felt a pang in her heart because she knew who Harold was doing this for.

She turned to leave. "I'm going to find Daryl and get another transfer deed."

"Desiree," Harold called her back.

Desiree turned around and hugged him without a word.

"We don't need that," Harold said gently, "The company has already sent people to the auction. We'll have news soon. There's no need to insist on that particular piece."

Desiree didn't say anything, just hugged him tighter.

As they were having their moment, Harold's phone rang. She started to let go, but Harold gently held her in place.

He freed one hand and answered the phone right there, "Mom."

That one word made Desiree freeze.

Harold's hand stayed on her back, gently soothing her.

Just as Desiree was calming down, she heard Ember's voice faintly through the phone. "Harold, when are you going to divorce that Desiree?"

Desiree felt a wave of disappointment wash over her.

Harold frowned. "Mom, why are you still saying this? The rumors have already died down."

"Even if they have, those photos are real, aren't they? Don't tell me they were photoshopped. I've been around long enough to know better! Besides, I asked my student, and he said there were no signs of editing. That clarification was fake." She then urged, "Hurry up and get divorced, got it? Don't make me come to your office. It's bad enough you don't come home anymore..."The voice on the other end kept going on and on.

Desiree suddenly went limp in his arms, sliding to the floor.

Harold couldn't take it anymore. "That's enough, Mom. I'm hanging up."

He quickly ended the call and helped Desiree up from the floor. "Desiree, don't listen to what my mom says. She doesn't know the whole story, and she doesn't know you either."

"But she's your mother. Can you really go against her?" Desiree looked at him and asked.

Harold was silent for a moment, then looked at her steadily, his lips parting slightly. "I can."

Desiree was stunned; she hadn't expected that answer.

Harold pulled her into his arms and gently kissed her forehead. "Alright, don't think about it. I won't let anyone come between us. Right now, the most important thing to me is you and the baby."

His gaze fell on her still-flat belly, filled with tenderness.

Desiree's anxiety melted away in that tenderness.

But she wasn't planning to sit idly by when it came to Ember.

She couldn't rely on Harold to solve all her problems. She was pregnant, not incapacitated.

So, while Harold was busy with work, Desiree made an excuse to stay home. Once she got permission, she quietly went to the Lewis family home and rang the doorbell.

"Coming. Who's ringing the bell so urgently?" Ember opened the door, and upon seeing Desiree, her face instantly turned cold. She raised her hand to close the door. "Desiree. We don't welcome you. Please go back to where you came from."

"Wait, Mrs. Lewis, don't close the door, please!" Desiree, in her haste, used her hand to block the door.

Ember was closing the door quickly.

Desiree's hand got caught, and she gasped in pain, her eyes instantly reddening.

Ember showed only a slight hint of concern and didn't apologize, "I've made my stance clear. I don't think you and Harold are a good match. We do not support your marriage. Therefore, there's nothing more to discuss between us."

Desiree was hurt and humiliated; she had never been treated like this before.

But she took a deep breath, thinking of Harold's gentle care, and persisted. She held onto the iron door. "Mrs. Lewis, I just want to talk to you, please.."

"You..." Ember was taken aback.

"Mrs. Lewis, please let me in." Desiree softened her tone, pursing her lips. "I actually have something important to tell you."

Ember eyed her suspiciously but eventually let her in.

Desiree didn't immediately say what she had come for. Instead, she headed straight to the kitchen and started unpacking the gift box she had brought.

"What are you doing? We don't need these things!" Ember hurried to stop her.

Desiree still took out two bottles of Jack Daniel's and placed them on the table, along with two boxes of tea.

Wesley's eyes lit up at the sight of the Jack Daniel's.

He picked up a bottle, examining it closely. "Is this genuine Jack Daniel's?"

"Knowing you like it, I brought some," Desiree said with a slight smile.
