Chapter 926 Revenge
Lyra checked the time and quickly motioned for Mia to sit down.
They had barely settled into their seats when a woman strutted over, her eyes fixed on the seat Lyra was occupying. "Get up, I want this seat!"
Lyra frowned. She didn't recognize the woman from the hospital.
The woman was decked out in designer jewelry and carried a Louis Vuitton bag, not the type to squabble over a seat.
Lyra couldn't tell if the woman was looking for trouble or genuinely wanted the seat. She pointed to an empty seat nearby.
"There's an empty seat over there. You can take that one."
She then lowered her head, ignoring the woman.
The woman's eyes widened in disbelief. "I want this seat! Get up, did you hear me?"
She reached out to yank Lyra from the seat.
Lyra was genuinely angry now. She shook off the woman's hand. "I was here first. There are plenty of other seats. Why are you fixated on this one?"
"I want this seat, and you're not willing to give it up. You're just a lowly doctor. Here, take this!"
The woman shoved a card into Lyra's hand before she could react.
With a smug look, the woman said, "There's $200,000 on this card, no password. I'm not fighting for the seat; I'm buying it. How about it? This money is probably more than your annual salary. Now get lost and stop being an eyesore."
Lyra held the card, feeling its cold touch. It was something she had once desperately wanted.
In the past, she might have agreed. But now, as she held the money, she thought about the time she almost made a huge mistake for $100,000 by secretly photographing Jeffery.
Lyra's fingers tightened around the card before she abruptly let go, handing it back to the woman. "Sorry, even though I'm just a low-paid doctor, I can't accept this money without earning it. Please take it back."
"And I'm not giving up my seat. I was here first. Please have some decency. Thank you."
"You!" The woman felt deeply insulted and pointed at Lyra.
"How dare you refuse me! Do you know who I am? A mere doctor dares to defy me? You must not want to work at this hospital anymore!"
Mia tugged at Lyra's sleeve.
Lyra looked down at Mia's eyes, which glanced at the woman with a mix of disgust and fear.
"Lyra, don't argue with her. She's Irene Lopez from the Lopez family, the biggest and most powerful family in the city. You don't want to mess with them."
The Lopez family?
Lyra was stunned, not out of fear, but because she thought of Gregory, the albino patient who also had the last name Lopez.
Irene saw Lyra staring at her silently and grew even angrier. "Give me your seat, and I'll pretend nothing happened. Otherwise, I'll make sure you're kicked out of this hospital. Believe me?"
Lyra didn't understand why Irene was so insistent. "Why do you want this seat so badly?"
Irene hesitated. Of course, it was because this seat was closer to the stage, where she could see Jeffery better!
"I don't have to explain to you. Just tell me if you're giving up the seat or not."
Lyra's eyes were calm. She looked like the type who could be easily bullied, but her words were firm. "No."
Irene was about to explode when steady footsteps sounded from outside. A man walked in, his white coat highlighting his refined demeanor.
Irene glared at Lyra, memorizing her face, then angrily took another seat.
Jeffery's gaze swept over the audience.
Lyra felt his eyes pause on her for a moment, but it might have been her imagination.
"Today, we'll discuss cell structure. Here's my doctoral thesis. Let's take a look." Jeffery operated the projector.
He was surprisingly good at lecturing.
Even better than some university professors, making complex topics easy to understand. Lyra listened intently, occasionally jotting down notes, completely absorbed.
Mia glanced at Lyra's detailed notes and whispered, "Lyra, if you ever get promoted or get a raise, or even pursue a PhD, I won't be jealous. Really."
Who could compete with Lyra's dedication?
Lyra smiled. "If you need them, I can lend you my notes."
"No, thanks. I'm fine as I am." Knowing her own limits, Mia politely declined.
After the lecture, Lyra still felt unsatisfied.
At that moment, a nurse who Lyra wasn't very familiar with approached her to borrow her notes.
Lyra looked puzzled. "Aren't you a nurse?"
Have nurse exams become this advanced? Was she out of touch with the nursing profession or just behind the times?
The nurse's eyes darted nervously.
"Please, Dr. Cole, just let me see them. I promise I'll return them soon."
"Alright, if you don't want to explain, I'll lend them to you. Just make sure to return them soon." Lyra agreed, reminding the nurse.
The notes were important to her and couldn't be lost.
The nurse's eyes flickered with guilt, but Lyra didn't notice.
Lyra packed up and left.
After she left, the nurse handed the notes to Irene.
Irene flipped through them casually, then tore out several pages, crumpling them into a ball and tossing them into a nearby trash can.
Watching the notes' tragic fate, Irene felt a bit of relief.
She told the nurse, "You did well. This card is yours."
The nurse's eyes lit up. It was the same card Lyra had refused earlier.
By the afternoon, Lyra's notes still hadn't been returned. She searched for the nurse everywhere but couldn't find her.
Mia saw her distress and suggested, "I'll help you look. More people, more power."
Lyra thanked her, and they began searching the hospital together.
Finally, they found the nurse hiding in the bathroom. Lyra pulled her out of the last stall, where she seemed to be hiding without doing anything.
Lyra didn't have time to think about it, her face showing urgency and confusion. "Why are you here? I've been looking for you. Where are my notes?"
The nurse stammered, unable to make a sound.
Lyra had a bad feeling.
"Are my notes okay? You promised to return them. Where are they?" Lyra pressed.
The nurse finally admitted that she had accidentally ruined the notes.
Lyra felt like the sky had fallen, her legs wobbling, almost unable to stand.
