Chapter 306 Today Is the Happiest Day of My Life
"Who are you calling? Why's it taking so long?" Pearl asked, noticing Oscar had been on the phone for a while.
Curious, she couldn't help but ask.
Oscar put his phone away, took her hand, and pulled her close. "It was a conference call. Had some urgent stuff to handle. Sorry for the wait."
Pearl shook her head and smiled. "Urgent stuff is important. I don't mind. I just saw you frowning and thought you were upset."
Pearl always paid close attention to Oscar, worried if he had tough issues to deal with.
"I'm not upset," Oscar said, smiling. "Today’s the day I proposed to you. How could I be upset? It's the happiest day of my life!"
He kissed her cheek.
Pearl wrapped her arms around his neck. "I have some exciting news for you."
Oscar held her waist, pressing his forehead to hers. "What’s that?" he asked softly.
Pearl blushed and looked down, genuinely happy.
Keeping their child was the right choice.
"We've been married a while; it's time for a baby. Didn't Magdalen always want a grandchild? We..."
"Oscar!" Elijah interrupted, his serious eyes on Oscar. "We found something in the suburbs..."
Elijah hesitated, not wanting to scare Pearl.
Oscar could tell it was serious. "I'll be there soon!"
He let go of Pearl. "I'll be right back."
Pearl nodded. "Okay, I'll tell you when you get back."
Oscar patted her head affectionately.
He left with Elijah.
Pearl watched him go, fully understanding his situation. She knew he had a lot on his plate but still worried about him.
She feared Oscar might be in danger.
Since Elijah showed up, Oscar seemed less relaxed.
He was not only the CEO of the Brown Group but also Elijah's admired captain.
Pearl was already in a military vehicle, ready to head home. But as she got in, she saw Sophia stepping out of another vehicle. Sophia spotted Pearl and waved excitedly. "Pearl!"
Pearl smiled. "Sophia."
Sophia jumped into Pearl's car and hugged her. "Pearl, I missed you so much. It's been ages since I last saw you."
Pearl hugged her back. Sophia was still young and innocent, something Pearl lacked.
Pearl was always calm and not very lively, so she wished she could be more like Sophia.
That's why she was more indulgent with Sophia.
"I've been busy with work and haven't visited Hunter much. What brings you here?" Pearl asked.
Sophia linked arms with her and leaned in. "I bugged Elijah to bring me. He said you and Oscar were here, so I had to come see you. Finally, I get to see you."
Sophia snuggled into her. "What's up? You seem thinner."
"Am I not fatter?" Someone had said she gained weight recently.
She was pregnant, so she couldn't have lost weight.
Sophia touched her face and pinched her waist. "You really are thinner. Have you not been eating well?"
"I've been eating well," Pearl said, thinking about recent stress. "Maybe I'm just tired."
"Then you need to take care of yourself," Sophia insisted. "I told Grandpa I'd stay with you for a few days. I even brought my luggage!"
Someone was loading luggage into their car.
"Alright, then let Oscar cook for you," Pearl suggested.
"Really?" Sophia said excitedly. "That would be awesome. He should cook!"
Pearl returned to the villa. It had been a while, but it felt like just yesterday.
Sophia, a snack lover, had already bought a ton before they even got home. She really planned to stay for a while and eagerly shared food with Pearl.
They watched TV together, which reported a body found in the suburbs, which had its internal organs removed.
Sophia's face turned pale. "There are so many bad people nowadays, they even removed all the organs!"
Pearl thought about what Elijah had mentioned. He had said something about the suburbs.
'Could Oscar have gone to the crime scene?'
The body was a woman's,which made both Sophia and Pearl felt a chill.
"Didn't you hear this news when you and Elijah came over?" Pearl asked.
Sophia shook her head. "No, even if they did, they wouldn't say it in front of me."
Though from a military family, Sophia knew nothing about such cruel matters, which were far removed from her life.
Pearl didn't ask further but still worried.
'Organs removed—were they sold?'
Pearl felt increasingly cold, a sharp pain gripping her heart.
"Pearl, are you okay?" Sophia asked, concerned. "Are you feeling unwell?"
Pearl composed herself. "I'm fine. I just want to rest for a bit."
"Okay, I'll help you upstairs." Sophia dropped her snacks and quickly helped Pearl upstairs.
Pearl stayed in the bedroom, waiting for Oscar to come back or call.
Late at night, she finally heard a car.
She knew Oscar was back.
She immediately got out of bed, not even bothering to put on her shoes, then quickly went back to put them on.
At the top of the stairs, she saw Oscar coming in. He took off his coat, looking tired, and handed it to the servant.
"You must be tired. I'll get you some water. Do you want me to run a bath for you?" Pearl asked, debating whether to pour him some tea or run a bath.
Oscar stopped her. "No need, I'll do it myself."
Pearl watched him walk past her and go upstairs, feeling he was a bit cold. He had been fine during the day.
Was it her imagination?
She thought she shouldn't overthink and followed him upstairs.
She waited in the bedroom, staying awake for Oscar despite being sleepy.
When Oscar came in, she immediately opened her eyes, trying to shake off her drowsiness.
Oscar threw his phone on the nightstand. "I'm going to take a shower."
"Okay."
After Oscar left, Pearl fell into deep thought. Something felt off; he wasn't supposed to be like this.
She looked at the phone on the table.
She hadn't asked where he went today, but she couldn't help feeling sensitive and suspicious.
She picked up Oscar's phone and opened the contacts, only to find that the call earlier wasn't a conference call—it was to Haley!
