Chapter 821 Public Disclosure
Nathaniel looked troubled.
Saskia subtly paused and glanced at his phone. "What's up? Something going on with the Flower Coast District?"
"No," Nathaniel replied, putting his phone away, making sure she couldn't see it.
He didn't say anything more.
With Benjamin around, Saskia couldn't press the issue, so she held back her questions.
Later, when Benjamin went off to play, she tried to read Nathaniel's expression. "You seemed off during dinner. If it's a work thing, I can help."
After all, she was Nathaniel's assistant now.
Ignoring the faint unease in her heart, she convinced herself.
But Nathaniel didn't seem inclined to talk. He rubbed his temples and stood up. "I've stayed long enough. I should go."
When Saskia moved to see him out, he stopped her.
Watching Nathaniel leave, Saskia felt no relief, only growing concern.
Soon, she found out what Nathaniel had been hiding.
Few people knew Nathaniel helped manage the Egan Group, but somehow the news had leaked, and the online gossip, which had just died down, flared up again.
This time, it wasn't about a love triangle.
It was about Nathaniel's identity.
Seeing the trending topic, Saskia rushed to the Egan Group and overheard people talking.
"Mr. Egan seems to be in trouble."
"Will he stay with the company now? If he stops being a lawyer?"
Seeing everyone so nonchalant made Saskia uneasy.
She knew Nathaniel.
Being a lawyer was his long-held career plan, and he never intended to change it.
With his family background, he didn't need to work hard in court; he could just inherit the family business.
Lost in thought, Saskia quickened her pace and pushed open the CEO's office door, breathless.
Nathaniel looked up, his expression as calm as ever, slightly surprised to see her so early.
Saskia was taken aback.
This wasn't what she expected.
"I'll make some coffee," she said after a pause, turning to do just that.
When she brought the coffee, she discreetly studied Nathaniel's face.
"You've been staring at me," Nathaniel said suddenly, startling her.
Thinking of the office gossip and last night's online uproar, she was sure he knew. "I saw the news online. Are you okay? We should have the PR team take down the video."
"I've already had them do that."
"Good. Maybe we can contact that paparazzo. She might know who leaked the news."
Saskia had learned that the paparazzo they met knew many others in the same line of work.
With rumors flying, cutting off the source was better than just managing the fallout.
But Nathaniel fell silent at her suggestion. "I already know who did it."
"Who?" Saskia asked instinctively.
Then she noticed his troubled expression.
In an instant, Saskia's face changed.
Nathaniel valued his work as a lawyer.
His involvement with the Egan Group was kept secret, at least from the legal community.
The Egan Group employees wouldn't leak it, so it had to be someone close. It couldn't be her, and Jade wouldn't do it. That left Robbie.
Robbie had always wanted Nathaniel to take over the family business and disapproved of his legal career.
"I'm going home today."
"It might be a misunderstanding. It doesn't have to be your father."
Nathaniel cut her off, his face calm.
It was this calm that was frightening.
Saskia sensed a storm brewing but didn't know how to comfort him.
In such situations, anything said seemed wrong.
Thankfully, Nathaniel noticed her discomfort and spoke gently, "So you'll have to tell Benjamin I can't see him today."
"I'll go with you," Saskia said, surprising herself.
But she quickly resolved.
"Benjamin can be picked up by the staff, or we can get him and then go to your parents'. I'll go with you," she repeated.
"This is different from last time."
"That's exactly why I need to go with you."
Seeing Saskia's determined look, Nathaniel sighed and agreed.
That afternoon, they picked up Benjamin and left him with the staff.
Saskia told him they'd be back late.
Benjamin didn't fuss.
On the way to the Egan Estate, Nathaniel called Jade.
Jade asked, "If you're coming, what about Benjamin?"
When she learned Benjamin wasn't coming, she sounded disappointed.
It wasn't right to bring Benjamin, as both Saskia and Nathaniel knew the purpose of this visit.
But Jade didn't know.
From her tone, Saskia could tell she was unaware of the situation.
She hesitated. "Your mother seems unaware of this."
Nathaniel, now leaning back in the car, replied, "She might not know."
Seeing his expression, Saskia knew he had made up his mind and said no more.
Nathaniel rarely visited the Egan Estate.
Busy with work, he sometimes went half a year without visiting, mostly keeping in touch with Jade by phone, and even less with Robbie.
But they were still family.
This time, Robbie was home.
Jade, happy to have the family together, had the staff prepare a meal.
When they arrived, Jade greeted them. "Finally! You said you were on your way, but you took so long. The food almost got cold."
"There was a delay," Saskia replied politely.
Jade's attitude towards her was warmer than before, though not overly friendly.
Robbie, seeing Nathaniel with Saskia, snorted. "Is the company so busy? I thought managing it would be easier than your job, but you still don't come home often."
The atmosphere tensed.
Nathaniel didn't respond, and Robbie's face darkened.
Jade, sensing the tension, was about to signal the staff.
But Nathaniel put down his utensils and said, "So you leaked the news to force me to quit being a lawyer?"
Robbie slammed the table. "Is that how you talk to your father?"
"Enough, Robbie. Nathaniel rarely comes home. Don't do this," Jade pleaded.
But both father and son were stubborn.
And Nathaniel had come prepared to confront Robbie.
