Chapter 454 Unexpected

Carol didn't know what they were really thinking, but she knew one thing: this wasn't simple.

She went to Louis with some stuff.

Louis was cold. "I don't need your stuff."

Carol looked hopeful. "Louis, these are for Pearl. I want to see her."

"She doesn't need them either," Louis replied icily.

If Carol really wanted to be friends with Pearl, she wouldn't have brought her here.

Carol's real aim was to target Pearl. Her friendliness was just an act. Louis saw through her.

"Louis, you're not her. I know what you're thinking. But now that I'm here, I can't hurt her," Carol said.

Louis just gave her a cold look and walked away.

Carol secretly dug her nails into her palm.

Pearl was stuck here; Carol didn't think she'd stay in her room forever. Once Pearl came out, Carol would have plenty of chances.

She imagined all kinds of ways to kill Pearl.

Meanwhile, Oscar was going crazy thinking about Pearl, obsessively studying maps.

He had a nation to serve and responsibilities to bear. But if he were just an ordinary guy? He'd want to die with Pearl, if it came to that.

He couldn't stand the thought of Pearl suffering.

They hadn't reunited as a family yet; he couldn't die so soon.

Just like Pearl thought, she wasn't in immediate danger.

He needed to check on the people he brought out, so he went to see Barbara and Adrian.

Barbara was being cared for by Elijah. She had lost her memory and was covered in wounds.

Elijah noticed she wasn't as agile as before.

Realizing this, Elijah's heart ached.

He had endured all kinds of injuries and hardships in training and battle, but this pain was different and suffocating.

Elijah wanted to hold Barbara, but she resisted.

Oscar arrived and saw this. He quietly left, not wanting to intrude.

He loved Pearl deeply, and as a man, he understood Elijah's feelings for Barbara.

Elijah wished Barbara would call him an idiot like she used to, but that was impossible now.

Adrian, like Barbara, was covered in wounds, showing the torture he had endured.

For Pearl, they had gone through so much.

Nicholas had been watching over Adrian. Seeing Oscar, Nicholas stood up and nodded. "Mr. Brown, Adrian's condition is bad. The military doctor found his kidneys are failing."

Adrian had traveled far and wide to find the antidote. For Pearl, he had persevered.

"Have the military doctor check my body. If my kidneys match Adrian's, I'll give him mine."

That way, he would have repaid Adrian for Pearl.

Nicholas was stunned. "Mr. Brown, are you sure?"

"I'm very sure," Oscar said firmly.

The military doctor arrived quickly. Without hospital equipment, they needed to go to the hospital to check kidney compatibility.

The doctor said, "Mr. Brown, with all due respect, we're at a critical point. If you make this sacrifice now, both allied forces and smaller nations on the Eldorian side might attack. Should our country retaliate or not?"

Not retaliating would be an insult. Retaliating would mean war.

Oscar was silent for a few seconds. "It can be done in secret."

The doctor shook his head. "That's not an option. Too many eyes are on us. Unless the state arranges a replacement for you, this can't proceed until you officially step down."

Adrian started coughing violently on the bed.

Oscar gave the doctor a look, and he fell silent.

Oscar stepped forward. "Adrian, how are you feeling?"

"Are you talking to me?" Adrian frowned, looking serious.

Oscar didn't expect Adrian and Barbara to be so tortured they lost their memory.

"Yes, your name is Adrian," Oscar said.

Adrian asked hoarsely, "Are you my friend?"

"Yes."

Oscar hadn't taken Adrian seriously before because of Pearl. But now, Pearl and he had a child, and Adrian had gone through so much for Pearl.

Adrian looked around, noting the different surroundings. "Did you rescue me?"

"Yes," Oscar replied, making Adrian fall silent.

Adrian didn't remember Oscar, but he remembered a face that appeared in his mind during months of torture.

One name stood out: Pearl.

Adrian hesitated. "Since you're my friend, do you know Pearl? What's my relationship with her?"

Oscar's lips tightened. He didn't know how to respond.

He didn't expect Adrian's feelings for Pearl to be so deep. Even now, Adrian remembered her clearly.

Oscar didn't know how to tell Adrian about Pearl. If he couldn't detoxify the poison in his body, Adrian could take care of Pearl for him.

If he was destined to die, he would save Pearl and let Adrian stay by her side. Adrian would surely love and protect her.

Paving the way for them was the only thing he could do well.

Adrian sensed something from Oscar's silence. "From your expression, it seems my relationship with Pearl wasn't good. Or is she someone I shouldn't love?"
