Chapter 249 I Didn't Mean It

"Oscar." During her argument with Magdalen, Hathaway noticed Oscar and was shocked.

Pearl saw him too, standing behind them, looking indifferent and unsurprised.

He seemed to accept it calmly.

Magdalen was stunned by his reaction.

She regretted blurting out that he wasn't Hathaway's biological son. It was a blow to him.

She stared at Oscar, dazed. "Oscar!"

Oscar stayed silent.

He had come to the cemetery, worried their visit might lead to conflict.

Hathaway was furious. "Magdalen, what are you saying? You're just trying to hurt me. You deserve a terrible fate!"

She shoved Magdalen hard.

Magdalen, focused on Oscar, didn't see it coming and fell down the steps.

Pearl, still shocked by the news about Oscar, saw Magdalen tumble and screamed, "Magdalen!"

Everyone turned to look.

Oscar's face showed a hint of fear and concern.

Magdalen rolled down several steps, getting scrapes, the worst on her head.

Pearl rushed to her side, too scared to move her. "Magdalen, wake up!"

Magdalen was unconscious.

Hathaway was terrified, staring at Magdalen at the bottom of the stairs. She looked at her hands, panicked. "I didn't mean it! She provoked me! It's not my fault!"

Oscar quickly lifted Magdalen. "Magdalen!"

Unable to wake her, he said, "We need to get her to the hospital now!"

He carried her out without looking at Hathaway withPearl following closely.

Hathaway called out, "Oscar!"

He ignored her.

Hathaway hurried to catch up.

Haley, in shock, followed too.

Magdalen was taken to the hospital.

Oscar waited anxiously outside.

When Hathaway arrived, she looked at Oscar, uneasy. "Oscar."

She was scared. With Magdalen revealing the secret and Oscar hearing it, she felt guilty.

Oscar glanced at her, coldly. "Anything else to say?"

His indifference chilled her. She explained, "Don't listen to Magdalen. She's trying to make things hard for us."

"I remember Magdalen taking care of me, not you."

These words hit Hathaway hard. Her eyes reddened. "It's not like that. It's your father's fault. Even if I brought you back, he ignored me. I had no choice. Life in the Brown family was hard for me too. You should understand, Oscar. I didn't mean to neglect you."

Oscar wasn't moved at all. He coldly replied, "I was just a pawn for you to win back your husband. Since he didn't care, I became useless to you."

"No!" Hathaway cried. "You're still my son. I regret it now and I'm trying to make it up to you."

"I don't need it," Oscar said, his gaze icy. "Calling you 'mom' was my biggest concession. You should be grateful!"

Hathaway stepped back, her voice trembling. "You can't treat me like this. Don't be like your father. Otherwise, I shouldn't have brought you back!"

Oscar's voice was cold. "Having me was supposed to win back your husband, but it was all for nothing!"

Each word cut deep into Hathaway.

Speaking of which, she actually forced Alfonso to marry her.. He never loved her; he despised her.

She thought marriage would make him hers, that they could overcome anything together.

But Alfonso stayed out all night, leaving her alone.

She tried everything to win him back.

She knew Alfonso wanted a son, so she thought giving him one would make him love her and stay.

But she couldn't have a son, so she brought back an adopted one—Oscar.

Alfonso was ruthless. He didn't love her or care for Oscar.

Living in constant disappointment, Hathaway blamed Oscar.

She mistreated him, even trying to starve him to death.

Hathaway never cared about Oscar.

Luckily, Magdalen found out and took Oscar away, saving him from that environment.

"I regret it. I shouldn't have treated you that way." Hathaway had come to her senses. With her husband indifferent, she focused on her son, hoping he'd be good to her. "I know I was wrong. It won't happen again. Please don't hold a grudge!"

Tears streaming, Hathaway clutched Oscar's arm, seeking forgiveness.

But for Oscar, the time he needed her most had passed. He knew who his true savior was.

He gently removed her hand and said, "Even without me, you have Haley. Focus on being good to her."

"No, you're my only son!"

Haley arrived, seeing Hathaway's humble demeanor, pleading with Oscar.

It was the first time she saw Hathaway so helpless.

Whether she heard their conversation or not, she immediately said, "Oscar, don't blame her. It's my fault. I should have stopped her, then Magdalen wouldn't have fallen. It's all my fault."

She slapped herself.

"Haley."

Hathaway grabbed her hand. "It was my impulsiveness. It's not your fault. Don't do this to yourself. Don't make your condition worse."

"It's my fault for involving you," Haley cried.

This made Hathaway even more heartbroken.

"Of course, you are at fault!"
