Chapter 863 What Origin

Saskia had been looking after Jade in the hospital for several days now.

Jade glanced at her and couldn't help but say, "I never realized before..."

Saskia, sensing where this was headed, quickly cut her off with a smile, "Mom, the past is the past. Let's leave it there."

"Alright, alright, I won't bring it up," Jade nodded, her eyes misting up as she sipped her warm porridge, feeling like things were finally looking up.

Nathaniel took a break at noon to visit, and seeing the two of them so happy together, he felt a wave of relief.

"Of course, my daughter-in-law is like a daughter to me," Jade said with a smile.

Saskia glanced at Nathaniel and added, "Mom's wound isn't serious. She'll be fine in a few days. With me here, you don't need to worry."

"Of course, I'm not worried," Nathaniel said, looking at her with concern. "Just don't overdo it."

"Mrs. Egan, how are you feeling today?" A voice called out before the person even entered the room. It was a well-dressed woman from the VIP room next to Jade's. There were only a few occupied rooms on the entire floor, and she often stopped by to chat when she had nothing else to do.

"Anais, come in and have a seat," Jade invited.

"I hope I'm not intruding. Your son is here too?" Anais said as she walked in, giving Nathaniel a once-over, a hint of surprise in her eyes.

"Your son is quite the looker, like a movie star. Have I seen him somewhere before?"

Jade beamed with pride. "Maybe you've seen him in a magazine. He's been interviewed a few times."

"Oh, right! He's the famous Lawyer Egan. I remember now. Such a young and accomplished man, truly a rare talent," Anais said, her admiration growing.

"Thank you, Anais," Jade replied with a smile.

Saskia stood up. "I'll walk him out."

Jade seemed to sense that the young couple wanted a moment alone and just waved her hand.

Saskia walked Nathaniel out.

Nathaniel hugged her. "Thanks for everything, Saskia."

"Alright, enough with the mushy stuff," Saskia said, gently pushing him away.

Nathaniel looked at her seriously. "Now that things are more stable, have you thought about going after what you once wanted to do?"

Saskia was taken aback. The upheavals in her family had crushed her dreams early on. For years, she had wanted to hold the law book, step into the courtroom, and shine with brilliant debates.

But time had flown by, and Saskia wasn't sure if she still had that same ambition.

Nathaniel looked at her earnestly and said firmly, "If you want to, I'll help you."

Saskia smiled and nodded. "Let's talk about it later. You should get back to the firm."

Nathaniel didn't press further and quickly left.

But his words had planted a seed in Saskia's heart.

When Saskia returned, Jade and Anais were chatting happily.

Anais was peeling an orange with a smile. "By the way, what's the story with your daughter-in-law?"

"She doesn't have much of a background. Nathaniel liked her since he was young. After many trials, they're finally together," Jade said with a smile.

"I see. In the business world, strong alliances are often formed between families with powerful backgrounds to strengthen their enterprises. Your daughter-in-law doesn't seem to fit that mold," Anais said, twirling her cross necklace.

"As long as she's good to us, that's all that matters. We don't pursue those things," Jade said with a faint smile.

"Can love put food on the table?" Anais lowered her voice. "You should find someone with a matching background, someone well-versed in culture and art. Like my daughter, for instance. She was raised in a scholarly family, and now she's grown into a beautiful young woman."

"Really? I haven't met your daughter yet, but judging by you, she must be very beautiful," Jade complimented.

Anais didn't want to be too blunt, and seeing that Jade wasn't taking the bait, she felt a bit disappointed.

Just as she was about to continue, she saw Saskia coming back in and had to stop, throwing in a casual remark.

"Back so soon?"

"Nathaniel's firm is busy," Saskia replied coolly, tidying up the room.

As she was leaving, Anais followed her out.

"Saskia, do you have a moment?"

"Do you have something to say?" Saskia turned back coolly.

Anais looked around. "Let's talk in my room. It's more spacious."

After a moment's thought, Saskia nodded in agreement.

Once inside, Anais's demeanor changed. She scrutinized Saskia.

"I've heard that you come from a humble background."

Saskia narrowed her eyes. "So what?"

"If your mother-in-law didn't look down on you, why would she say such things to me?" Anais sat up straight, exuding the arrogance of the wealthy. "Rich people, you know, they play around with a few girls like it's nothing. In the end, the one who stays by their side is someone who can stand shoulder to shoulder with them."

Saskia chuckled. "What are you getting at?"

"While you still have some benefits, why not take a sum of money from me and leave? Make room for someone else. I guarantee this will be the best deal you can get," Anais said arrogantly.

"Do you think everything is up for trade?" Saskia scoffed.

"Girls like you who latch onto wealthy families are all after money, aren't you? I've seen plenty like you. What's the point of acting all righteous here?" Anais sneered.

Saskia didn't say anything more. "Do you know why my mother-in-law is in the hospital?"

"Does it have anything to do with what we're discussing?"

"Of course it does," Saskia said, giving her a cold look. "My mother-in-law saw a madman with a knife trying to kill me and stepped in to protect me. If she didn't approve of me, why would she do that?"

Anais was stunned. "You, this..."

"I don't think we have anything more to discuss. If you think your daughter can make Nathaniel fall for her, go ahead and try," Saskia said with a faint smile, standing up to leave.

Anais was left speechless, unable to say a word.

Saskia filled a pitcher with water and returned to find Jade sitting up. "Staying in this hospital is so boring."

"Mom, your wound hasn't healed yet. Stay a couple more days," Saskia urged.

"Anais was fine before, but today she was saying all sorts of strange things," Jade sighed.

Saskia chuckled. "Do you want to be discharged? If you do, I'll handle the paperwork."
