Chapter 904 I Want You to Perform the Surgery

Jeffery noticed her hesitation. "You think you can't handle it?"

Lyra instinctively wanted to refuse. She felt Jeffery had already helped her a lot, but before she could speak, she heard a faint voice in her mind.

It was the voice of ambition.

Some people, once they settled into a comfortable environment, just coasted along, taking each day as it came. It was not that they couldn't get by that way.

But Lyra had ambition. Deep down, she couldn't accept mediocrity. It was this drive that had allowed her to work multiple jobs over the past few years and earn a total of six million dollars.

Some bosses were reluctant to let her go even after she had finished working for them.

Lyra hesitated for just a second before decisively following her heart. "No, I can do it. I might not be as meticulous with other things, but I can handle this."

Lyra had been studying that medical case for a long time. She had previously specialized in researching such clinical symptoms.

She didn't want to give up this opportunity.

Jeffery's indifferent expression softened, and a slight smile appeared on his lips. "Alright, you said it. I'll leave this surgery to you, but I won't help you."

Lyra had been prepared for this.

The condition was very rare. The patient's cells divided so quickly that they aged slowly. When they felt something was wrong, they came to the hospital for a check-up.

But the hospital had never seen such a condition before.

Word spread quickly in the medical community, and the hospital added the case to their research project, treating and studying it simultaneously.

It's worth mentioning that the project had faced multiple obstacles initially. It was unclear who was behind the opposition, but someone didn't want the patient to be cured; they just wanted to study the condition.

Rumor had it that Jeffery had brought in someone to ensure the project's approval.

So the project was now in his hands.

Jeffery flipped through the medical records. "I know you've studied similar cases internationally. You've gone through all the hospital's records."

Lyra felt a bit embarrassed. "Was I not supposed to look at those records? I didn't know..."

"That's why I'm letting you lead the surgery." Jeffery interrupted her, handing her the medical records and advising her to study them carefully.

Lyra realized that the records she had were incomplete.

Jeffery explained, "Someone in the project didn't want the information to leak. The external records were divided into two parts. Only the first half was given out."

Lyra understood.

They only gave her the first half because she wasn't part of the project yet. Now that she had the second half, she was officially involved.

This realization made Lyra feel both honored and overwhelmed.

Surrounded by experts, she was the only unknown figure.

How could she not be nervous?

Sensing her anxiety, Jeffery's voice softened. "Don't worry, it's just some information. Everyone in the team has seen it. And having it doesn't mean you're guaranteed to lead the surgery."

Jeffery's expression turned serious.

Lyra's demeanor also became serious. She lowered her gaze for a moment. "I understand. I'll work hard to earn it."

Jeffery clenched his fists, feeling a bit uncomfortable as he looked into Lyra's bright eyes. He quickly looked away.

Lyra was about to leave when she suddenly remembered something. "But the rumors about me are still out there..."

"They've been cleared up."

Her surprise was evident. "When did that happen?"

Jeffery's eyes held a hint of amusement, making him seem more approachable than usual. "Just in the past couple of days. I spread the news about Aaron's drug use."

Lyra understood.

Although there were many voices online, drug use was a serious accusation. People wouldn't trust someone with such a stain on their record. Now, if she checked online, she might even see people who had insulted her turning against Aaron.

But Lyra didn't care about that.

What mattered to her was her reputation, and now, someone had quietly restored it for her.

No words could fully express her gratitude. All she could say was, "Mr. Gray, I won't let you down."

From that moment on, Lyra immersed herself in studying the materials. Others thought she was obsessed.

A nurse, Violette, who usually chatted with her, noticed it was almost lunchtime and saw Lyra still working. She couldn't help but call out, "Hey, you need to take a break. Do you know what time it is?"

Lyra was startled and looked up, confused. "Why should I stop?"

"Look at the time. It's lunchtime. Aren't you going to the cafeteria?"

"You go ahead. I'll go when I'm done."

Lyra lowered her head again, her pen never stopping as she listed and crossed out various plans.

Violette leaned over to take a look but couldn't understand.

"I have something to ask you," she said.

Lyra didn't look up.

Taking that as permission, Violette continued, "Everyone's saying Mr. Gray wants you to join that project, the Tree of Life?"

Lyra's pen stopped.

The Tree of Life was the project's full name.

It was a classified project.

She covered her materials, alert. "How do you know?"

Many hospital projects were confidential, and most doctors and nurses wouldn't hear a word about them.

Lyra immediately thought someone might have leaked the information.

She remembered Jeffery mentioning that some people in the project didn't want her to lead the surgery and that she had to prove herself.

That was understandable.

If she were in their shoes, she would think Jeffery was crazy for choosing an unknown doctor over established experts.

She had prepared herself for opposition.

But she hadn't expected it to come in this form. What were they thinking? Leaking information would compromise confidentiality.

Seeing her reaction, Violette quickly explained, "I just heard it. I don't know who spread it, so don't ask me."

Lyra took a deep breath and put down her pen. "Go on."

Violette then shared what she had heard.

People thought Lyra wasn't qualified for the project. It was a classified project, and letting someone with no significant achievements lead it was unacceptable.

"Now they're saying you and Mr. Gray must have some inappropriate relationship. They've even made up stories about him having a child," Violette said, shrugging.
