Chapter 222 You Wouldn't Be So Kind as to Cook Me Chicken Soup
Pearl was about to leave, ignoring Oscar, when he turned around and saw her. "Dinner's almost ready. You hungry?" he asked.
Pearl stopped and faced him. "I just want to know when you're leaving."
Oscar dodged the question. "Dinner will be ready in ten minutes."
He turned back to his cooking, clearly avoiding her question.
Ten minutes later, Oscar brought out a pot of chicken soup.
He set it on the dining table, wiped his hands, and looked at Pearl. "Come on, it's ready."
Pearl eyed the chicken soup he'd spent two hours making, following a pregnancy recipe. It almost seemed like he was accepting the baby growing inside her.
She quietly walked over and sat down.
Oscar lifted the lid, and the steam filled the air with a delicious aroma. "Smells good, right?"
He was pretty pleased with his work.
He sat across from her.
The room was just the two of them, the atmosphere almost like a husband doting on his wife.
Pearl said nothing, picked up a spoon, and asked, "I saw you were making a pregnancy meal earlier."
Oscar looked a bit uncomfortable. Cooking wasn't hard, but this was his first time making something so special. "I made it for you," he said, serving her some soup.
Pearl noticed his attentive attitude, a stark contrast to the anger he'd shown when he wanted her to abort. She smiled slightly. "Have you accepted it?"
Oscar's hand paused, his eyes on her belly, his face darkening as he placed the bowl in front of her.
Pearl looked at the soup but didn't dare drink it. "Are you really okay with this? You were so eager for me to have an abortion before. You wouldn't be this nice just to make me chicken soup."
She had to be cautious. Oscar would do anything to get what he wanted. "You even gave Haley contraceptive pills. You wouldn't have put something in this soup, would you?"
Pearl had found out about the pills by accident.
That day, only Haley had seen Oscar.
The pills were meant for Haley.
If Oscar could do that to Haley, he could do it to Pearl. She felt his kindness had to have a catch.
Oscar's face changed, his eyes cold. "You think I'd do that?"
"Shouldn't I?" Pearl looked at him. It was normal for her to suspect him. If he could do that to Haley, why not her?
Oscar's enthusiasm was doused, and his tone turned firm. "Pearl, I did want you to have an abortion. I can tolerate anything but this child. I won't hold you accountable for the past, as long as you have the abortion!"
He emphasized he couldn't tolerate her child.
Pearl had thought that even if he doubted whose child it was, it didn't matter since they would eventually divorce.
But he couldn't tolerate it, didn't want a divorce, and was still trying to force her.
"I've said it before, I won't abort the child," Pearl said coldly, looking at the soup he had spent hours making without any appetite. "I won't drink this chicken soup either. Don't waste your efforts. If you want to spend your energy on a woman, go find Haley. She'd appreciate it, and I’ll support you two!"
Oscar furrowed his brow and said coldly, "Can we not drag others into our issues?"
Pearl chuckled. " Oscar, I don't get you. I've already given you my blessing, what more do you want?"
"Are you talking about these two plane tickets?" Oscar pulled out the tickets Pearl had left behind.
Pearl had said she was going to Francina with Oscar, but she had booked tickets for Oscar and Haley.
Pearl was pushing her husband away.
Pearl glanced at them. "You didn't go."
Oscar, in front of Pearl, tore up the tickets and placed them on the table, his cold eyes fixed on her. "Your blessing is just an excuse to run away with the child. You're not giving me your blessing; you're giving yourself one, right?"
He looked around, scanning the room, and coldly mocked, "Pearl, what exactly have you gained? Living in this tiny apartment with a father who can't even bother to see his child?"
"Since you left me, that man hasn't come to see you, has he?" Oscar's hand clenched, veins bulging as he suppressed his anger.
Pearl turned her head away, staying silent.
"You don't have to say it; I already know. He never came to see you!" Oscar said angrily.
"What does it have to do with you?" Pearl wanted to avoid this topic.
"You are my wife. What does it have to do with me?" Oscar's tone grew heavier. "I always thought you were smart. How could you fall for someone like him? You don't want an abortion, and you expect me to raise the child?"
Pearl responded, "I'm living alone now. Doesn't that clearly indicate my decision?"
"You can't do that without my consent!" Oscar firmly rejected her unilateral thoughts and actions.
"In that case, there's nothing more to discuss," Pearl said icily. "You already know my terms. I want nothing. It won't be a loss for you or the Brown family."
"Go through with the abortion!" Oscar demanded sternly once again.
Pearl looked into Oscar's sharp eyes, knowing that if she didn't agree, he would find a way to make her have the abortion, leaving her no chance to keep the child.
He had always been like this, never considering her feelings.
She was like a spinning top, with him deciding where she should be, regardless of whether it hurt or exhausted her.
In truth, she had no regrets about any of this.
She had chosen Oscar, and she had fallen in love with him. These past ten years were the consequences she had to bear.
Her price had been high enough. Why couldn't he let her be?
Pearl held back her tears and stubbornly said, "What if I say no?"
Oscar's eyes turned icy. "Don't force me to act against you!"
At that moment, Pearl could no longer hold back, her eyes immediately reddening.
In front of Oscar, she was indeed weak. As long as he gave an order, she had to comply, without even the right to say no.
"Pearl," Oscar called out her name. Observing her reddened eyes and the tears she struggled to contain, a look of deep distress on her face, he softened his expression and his tone.
Pearl raised her head, attempting to halt the tears from cascading down her cheeks, trying to numb some of the pain. "Oscar, perhaps the child doesn't hold the same significance for you, but to me, he's a part of my being. I anticipate his arrival more eagerly than anyone else. I cannot bear to witness him being taken away from within me. I just can't do it."
