Chapter 728 Life and Death Crisis
"Wish you both happiness," the clerk said as he quickly canceled their divorce papers.
As they walked out, Harold pulled out their wedding photo from his bag. The smiles in the picture mirrored the joy he felt now.
"Desiree, let's go on another honeymoon," Harold said, wrapping his arm around her waist. "How about the beach this time?"
"And what about the wedding?" Desiree looked up at him with a radiant smile.
Their eyes met, and both felt a sweetness in their hearts.
The last time they got married, neither of their parents supported them. Although they had a wedding, it left a sense of regret in both of them.
Now, Wesley and Ember still didn't approve, but at least Liam and Tessa had come around, and Desiree was expecting a baby.
"By the way, Harold, I had a dream last night," Desiree said, her voice filled with wonder. "A little boy called me 'Mommy' in the dream."
"He also said he was bringing his sister to find me."
"Could it be twins?" Harold's heart leaped with joy.
Whether it was a boy or a girl, he would love them both. He just wanted Desiree to have this one pregnancy and not go through the pain of childbirth again. Besides, he had already had a vasectomy. Whether they ended up as a family of three or four, this was perfect.
"We'll find out soon enough. When the pregnancy progresses a bit more, we'll know during the check-up," Desiree said, her eyes softening at the thought of their child.
This baby was a miracle, and no matter the gender, it was her treasure.
Even Liam and Tessa were eagerly anticipating the baby's arrival.
"Harold," Desiree hesitated, "now that we've canceled the divorce and decided to stay together, should we tell your parents?"
She worried that if they told Ember, she might come up with more schemes to cause trouble. But if they didn't tell them, could they really cut off contact with Harold's parents forever?
Harold was still pondering when Hermione's call came through.
She sounded frantic, almost in tears. "Harold, you need to get to the hospital. Aunt Ember collapsed and is in surgery. The doctors say she might not make it!"
"Is it that serious?" Harold was skeptical.
It wasn't that he didn't care about Ember, but her past actions had eroded all his trust.
He couldn't help but wonder if Ember was really in surgery or if this was another ploy.
Hermione's sobs intensified. "It's true! I saw her collapse with my own eyes. If I'm lying, may I fail all my classes and never graduate!"
For a college student, that was the most serious vow.
Harold remained silent.
Hermione, thinking Harold was still angry and unwilling to come, pleaded, "Harold, I know Aunt Ember and I were wrong. You can yell at us all you want after the surgery, but please come sign the papers. Uncle Wesley is out of town, and you're the only one who can."
If Harold refused to come and the surgery failed, they might not even get to say goodbye.
She hated herself for getting involved in Ember's schemes for a bit of petty gain. Now, things had spiraled out of control.
"Alright, I'll be there as soon as I can," Harold said, hanging up. He turned to Desiree. "Do you want to come with me or take a cab home?"
"Let's go together. There's no time to waste. Just drive," Desiree said, quickly fastening her seatbelt.
She wasn't about to hold a grudge against someone who was seriously ill.
At the hospital, they rushed to the surgery waiting area. Hermione was pacing the hallway. Seeing them, she found a glimmer of hope. "Harold, you're here! I was so scared you wouldn't come."
"You should be thanking Desiree," Harold said. "She's the one who forgave you."
Hermione felt even more ashamed.
She repeatedly apologized to Desiree, bowing deeply. "I'm so sorry. Please, hit me if it makes you feel better."
"Forget it. Just don't do this again. Focus on your studies," Desiree said, not wanting to hold a grudge against Hermione.
Firstly, Hermione was young, just starting college and not even eighteen yet. Secondly, Desiree knew the real culprit was Ember, and Hermione was just a pawn.
"Okay, once Aunt Ember recovers, I'll go back to school and never interfere in anyone's love life again," Hermione promised, having learned her lesson.
After apologizing, the three of them sat in the hallway, waiting.
During this time, Wesley called via video. Seeing Desiree on the screen, his expression changed, filled with shame.
Their family had treated Desiree so poorly, yet here she was, concerned for Ember. Her generosity made him feel small.
"Dad, I've had a vasectomy, and Desiree is pregnant. This will be our only child," Harold said bluntly. "If it's twins, one will take your surname, and the other will take Desiree's. If it's just one, they'll take Desiree's surname."
"Harold! Are you out of your mind?" Wesley nearly choked on his anger.
He glared at Harold. "How could you make such a big decision without consulting me?"
"Consult you? Would you have agreed?" Harold retorted.
The answer was obvious. Wesley and Ember, with their traditional views, would never have agreed to either the vasectomy or the child taking Desiree's surname.
Rather than waste time trying to convince them, Harold decided to act first and inform them later.
"Respect goes both ways. You never asked for my opinion on the things you did. I'm just following your example. If you can't accept it, then we can cut ties," Harold said, delivering another blow.
Every word felt like a knife to Wesley's heart.
He was furious, but there was nothing he could do through the screen.
