Chapter 253 Everything Was Said Directly

Haley's face tightened, and she said firmly, "No way. I am Haley Garcia now, a big star. I can't do that!"

"Haley," Jeffery said slowly, then smiled. "Even the name Haley isn't spotless. Do desperate people still hope for light?"

He tapped his fingers on the table.

They were all tainted; none could claim to be clean.

Haley's face went pale, her hands clenched. "That's all in the past. We can move on."

She wanted to believe she was clean.

No one knew her past, which she had got rid of.

Jeffery stayed silent.

Haley looked at him earnestly. "I want a normal life. I have a career, and I want a family. You can have that too."

Jeffery looked into her eyes, almost believing her.

But then he smirked. "It's not over."

Haley froze.

"They'll come back."

Haley's body went limp. "Can't I escape?"

"There's one way."

Haley looked up. "What way?"

"Death." Jeffery's face was calm, but there was a hint of sadness.

Only death could free them.

It was their fate, set from birth.

Those in darkness could never see the light, and if they did, it was fleeting.

Death was their end, he didn't know when, but it wouldn't be a peaceful one.

Jeffery touched his cross bracelet, still smiling. He knew their fate.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Haley, already scared, jumped.

Jeffery glanced at the door. "You were followed."

Haley was shocked. "What? Who?"

Jeffery stood up, pulled back the curtain. "Maybe more than one."

"You've been exposed."

"Is it Pearl?" Haley stood up, panicked. "What do I do?"

Public opinion was intense. She knew Pearl was acting for Magdalen.

Pearl probably hired someone to follow her, trying to find out about her deafness.

She had made Magdalen face heavy public scrutiny.

Magdalen hated her and even hit her. This grudge had to be settled!

But Pearl couldn't find out.

Jeffery, hands in his pockets, pointed. "There's a back door."

Haley hurried in that direction. "I'll go first!"

She reached the back door, then turned to Jeffery. "Pearl came to you. This is your chance. She's a threat to both of us. Get rid of her!"

Jeffery's eyes stayed on the outside. "I know what to do."

Haley smiled. She hoped Jeffery would take care of Pearl, which would make her life easier.

That would make her life easier.

Pearl was the biggest obstacle now!

After Haley left, Jeffery slowly opened the door.

Pearl stood there. She had someone tail Haley, waiting for this moment.

Haley wouldn't let herself go deaf; someone must be helping her.

Haley coming here was suspicious, and Pearl hoped to find clues.

When the door opened, she saw Jeffery. "It's you!"

Jeffery replied, "What a coincidence."

Pearl noticed his attire; he was clearly a doctor. It all made sense. She glanced inside, looking for Haley.

Her informant said Haley went in and never came out.

"Are you a doctor?" Pearl asked.

"Yes," Jeffery replied.

"A friend of mine might have been here," Pearl probed.

"Haley?" Jeffery said.

Pearl looked up at him. He didn't seem to hide anything.

It seemed he knew what she wanted to ask.

This info came too easily.

"Did she really come here?" Pearl asked.

"I have the answers you want," Jeffery said. "If you want to know, come in."

He left the door open and walked inside.

Pearl hesitated but then stepped in, seeing Jeffery's openness.

It was a large house, the whole floor was his.

Kitchen, bedroom, and office all in one space.

She'd never seen such an arrangement.

A large space, yet undivided. She quickly scanned the room, seeing a bed, surgical tools, and medical supplies.

He was indeed a doctor.

"Have a seat," Jeffery said, suddenly appearing beside her, making Pearl jump.

"I only have coffee," he said, placing a cup on the table.

Pearl, wary but polite, said, "Thank you."

She sat down, holding the coffee, feeling its warmth ease her chill. Her eyes stayed on Jeffery, scrutinizing him.

Jeffery sat in his office chair. "What do you want to ask?"

"Have we met before?" Pearl asked.

His blue eyes locked onto hers.

He kept rubbing his bracelet, drawing her gaze.

She felt even colder.

Subconsciously, Pearl shrank back.

Jeffery took a remote, turned on the air conditioner, and warm air blew out. "It's always dark here, about ten degrees colder than outside."

After turning on the air conditioner, he put down the remote. "To answer your question, we just met a moment ago."

Pearl felt she was overthinking.

She had thought they knew each other but couldn't recall anything.

"Sorry, I was being presumptuous," Pearl said, feeling warmer. She changed the subject. "You said Haley is your patient. Can you elaborate?"

Jeffery squinted, sipping his coffee. "You want to know why Haley went deaf. Yes, I did it. Haley came to me today, wanting her hearing restored."

Pearl looked at him in shock, not expecting him to tell her.

She had prepared to find nothing. "Why are you telling me this? If Haley came to you, shouldn't it be confidential?"
