Chapter 969 Pregnant

Lyra nodded to show she understood. After the nurse left, she tiptoed over to Philip's desk.

She crouched down, watching Philip intently as he played with his building blocks. "Hey, I know how to put these together," she said softly. "Wanna learn?"

Philip's hands paused.

Lyra pretended not to notice and continued, "Building blocks can be tricky, huh? And it looks like this one is just a single piece. Do you have more?"

Philip glanced up at her.

Lyra had expected him to ignore her.

But to her surprise, he spoke, "Yeah, there are more in the room."

Even though it was a brief response, it was enough to make Lyra's heart leap with joy!

Any form of communication was a good sign! It meant his autism wasn't the most severe type.

Lyra followed him to the room to get the blocks and spent the afternoon quietly playing with him.

Midway through, the nurse brought in their lunch.

Philip showed little interest in the food, even though his stomach was growling. He didn't seem to care about his own well-being.

Lyra couldn't let this continue.

She gently took one of the blocks from Philip's hand. "I've got a new way to build that I want to show you, but I haven't finished yet. Want to keep learning? How about we eat first?"

"I'm not hungry," Philip said, just as his stomach growled again.

Lyra didn't call him out on it. She nodded and said, "But I'm hungry. How about eating with me?"

Philip thought for a while.

It was heartbreaking and surprising to see such a mature expression on a five-year-old's face.

But Lyra wasn't surprised at all.

Some children with autism are incredibly smart, even geniuses, but they often struggle to connect with the outside world.

Philip's silence showed he was seriously considering whether to listen to Lyra.

This was a very good sign! It meant he still had basic logical thinking skills.

Lyra waited patiently, not rushing or interrupting his thought process.

Soon, she got the result she hoped for. Philip put down the blocks and picked up his spoon.

After lunch, they continued building. With Lyra's expert guidance, they finally completed a complex castle model by evening.

Applause came from the doorway.

Philip jumped in surprise and turned to see that a crowd had gathered outside without him noticing!

The director, nurses, and even other children were there, their eyes filled with joy and admiration.

One child couldn't help but exclaim, "Wow! What an amazing castle!"

"I want to play too! Can I join?" a little girl asked eagerly.

Mary looked at Philip kindly and smiled, "You can, but you need Philip's permission first."

The little girl ran over to Philip.

Philip was like someone who had shut himself in a room for years, unaware that it was wrong to do so, just lost in his own world. Then one day, the door to that room was opened.

The change was overwhelming for him.

Lyra worried he might have a stress reaction and wanted to ask the girl to leave, but she saw that Philip only clenched his fists nervously and paused. He didn't run away.

Lyra decided not to intervene and let the change happen naturally.

More children gathered around, their eyes full of curiosity and kindness.

Lyra quietly stepped back, slowly leaving the children's world and giving them the stage.

After that, Lyra often came to play blocks with Philip.

As the other children got to know her, they seemed to understand that Philip wasn't ignoring them; he just didn't know how to interact.

So, every time they played with blocks, one or two children would join in.

Gradually, Philip started to communicate with others! Though he still spoke little, it was a huge step forward.

Mary was overjoyed and excitedly held Lyra's hand. "It's all thanks to you, Dr. Cole! We've tried for so long without success, but you got Philip to speak again!"

Lyra humbly waved her hand. "It's mostly because Philip is very smart. He just needed the right guidance."

She picked up her water glass, about to say more, when she suddenly smelled the food wafting in from outside.

It was lunchtime for the children at the center.

She often smelled the food before, but this time it made her stomach churn. Lyra quickly ran to the trash can and dry-heaved.

The director followed her anxiously. "Dr. Cole, are you okay? Are you feeling unwell?"

Lyra was about to say she was fine when a thought struck her—was her period late this month?

The idea made her tense up, her hand instinctively resting on her abdomen.

Lyra's period was always punctual unless there was a special reason. But this time, it was late.

"Dr. Cole, if you're really feeling unwell, maybe you should go to the hospital for a check-up?" Mary's concerned voice brought Lyra back to reality.

Lyra shook her head and forced a smile. "I'm fine, probably just tired."

But because of this incident, she couldn't stay at the center as if nothing had happened. Soon, she said goodbye to Mary and left.

Back at the hospital, Lyra, feeling anxious, didn't go to see Jeffery but quietly went for a check-up.

The doctor who attended to her was a colleague she knew well.

When the results came out, the doctor beamed. "Congratulations, Dr. Cole! You're pregnant, three weeks along!"

The news hit Lyra like a bolt from the blue, leaving her stunned.

She gently touched her abdomen, her eyes filled with disbelief. "Really? Am I really pregnant?"

With the report in hand, the result was undeniable.

But as Lyra walked out of the clinic, she still felt like she was walking on air.

She and Jeffery hadn't used contraception since their marriage.

After all, they weren't young, and Lyra had always longed for a complete family due to her own childhood experiences.

But she hadn't expected this day to come so soon!

After calming down, she thought about how to share the good news with Jeffery.

Lyra decided to give him a big surprise.

So, as soon as Jeffery left the operating room, he received a message from Lyra saying she was feeling unwell and going home early.

Jeffery immediately frowned and handed off his two afternoon surgeries to someone else.

His colleague grumbled, "Mr. Gary, you're not doing the surgeries?"

"You can handle them. They're not difficult, and you're fully capable," Jeffery explained as he took off his white coat. "I'm taking the afternoon off. My wife isn't feeling well."

Jeffery practically sprinted home, full of worry.

But when he opened the door, he found a completely different scene—Lyra was not only fine but had prepared a feast, with flowers and cake in the living room, making the whole house feel festive.

Seeing him, Lyra calmly took off her apron and wiped her hands. "You're back? Wash up and get ready for dinner."

Jeffery stood at the door, not moving, just looking at her deeply.

"You have something to tell me?" His tone was certain.

Lyra met his gaze for a moment, then sighed and smiled wryly. "Alright, I can't hide anything from you. I wanted to surprise you. Look at this."

Jeffery took the report she handed him.

At first, he frowned, but as he read the contents, his confusion turned into immense joy and emotion.

He hugged Lyra tightly, his body trembling with uncontrollable excitement.
