Chapter 81 Telling a Lie
She didn't politely address him as "President Oscar" but called him by his name.
She stood in front of him, blocking his way.
Oscar asked coldly, "Ms. Edwards, what do you want?"
Kelly looked at him arrogantly. She still didn't really believe it. "Is what you just said true? Are you really married?"
She had never heard any news about his marriage.
She doubted that he was using it as an excuse to avoid her.
Oscar's face remained cold. "I have no reason to lie."
"I haven't heard that you are married, and no one knows who your wife is. I suspect you are making excuses," Kelly remarked.
"That's none of your business," Oscar retorted.
The colder he became, the more interested Kelly became in him. She looked at him like she was looking at prey, with a desire to conquer him.
She liked people she couldn't have.
With a slight smile, she boldly approached him, exuding confidence in her demeanor and actions. "So what if you're married? You can get a divorce. I don't mind that you're married."
Pearl listened, her face changing.
Oscar didn't like women who thought highly of themselves and still bothered him.
Kelly happened to be that kind of person.
In consideration of Eric's face, Oscar didn't mind her abrupt behavior.
However, as she pressed closer, trying to flirt, a sense of digust overtook him.
His face turned dark and he was about to push her away, but Pearl stood in front of him and grabbed her arm.
"Ms. Edwards!"
Pearl intervened to stop Kelly, surprising Oscar and causing a slight change in his expression.
Kelly looked at Pearl again. "You're just Oscar's secretary."
Pearl's gaze turned cold. "This is a hospital, and there are many people watching us. Are you not afraid of being gossiped about for openly flirting with President Oscar? You are just a subordinate."
Kelly didn't regard her highly. "Others would think that Oscar and I are a good match. They wouldn't meddle like you do."
"President Oscar is my superior, it is my duty!" Pearl stared at her, her words sharp. "But, Ms. Edwards, you openly tried to seduce him after meeting him only once. You should have some self-respect. After being overseas for so long, you seem to have forgotten about etiquette and morals. Eric is a rule-abiding person. He would be very upset if he knew that you lost your dignity for a man."
Pearl's words made Kelly angry and embarrassed.
After Pearl's remark, even passersby looked at her with strange eyes, as if she shamelessly flirted with a man in public.
Kelly forcefully withdrew her hand and retorted, "I didn't."
"Well, that's great, Ms. Edwards. You must know what self-respect means then," Pearl replied politely with a smile.
Kelly glared at Pearl, feeling displeased.
Oscar was in a good mood, a smile playing at the corner of his mouth. "Let's go."
He held Pearl's hand, not caring whether others would see.
Pearl was still slightly reserved, instinctively wanting to hide the fact that they were holding hands.
She looked up at Oscar and found him smiling. She didn't know what could make him so happy.
She asked again, "I haven't heard you mention Felix and Grandpa being comrades, so I was quite surprised today. I didn't expect to meet someone from the Edwards family."
"Yes, Felix and Grandpa had a good relationship," Oscar murmured. "He treats me well too. Now that you've met him, he is a respected elder for me, and he quite likes you."
Pearl asked again, "Why haven't I seen him before?"
"To avoid suspicion," Oscar replied.
Avoid suspicion?
They were just visiting Felix, there shouldn't be a need to avoid suspicion.
Oscar smiled. "You did well just now!"
Pearl thought he was referring to her confrontation with Kelly.
With the lesson learned from last time, he blamed her for not understanding her own responsibilities. Of course, she would immediately clarify for him to avoid any misunderstandings.
Oscar said again, "Let's go to the gynecologist."
Pearl's face turned stiff, her chest tightening with emotion, and she stopped in her tracks.
Oscar turned back and saw that she wasn't moving. "What's wrong?"
"Don't you need to go to work? You can go to work first," Pearl suggested tentatively.
Oscar put his hand in his pocket and told her, "I don't need to go to work now."
This left Pearl with no good excuse, so she could only say, "It's not time yet, I'm a little tired. Let's go next time."
"You said you came specifically for a check-up today, so why do you want to go next time?" Oscar didn't understand her.
Pearl was trying to find an excuse and suddenly thought of something. She blurted out, "Because I feel like I'm having my menstrual cycle. It doesn't make sense to do these check-ups."
"Really?"
"Yes, I'm having my period. If I do a physical examination today, the results will be inaccurate, so there's no need to check today."
Oscar respected her decision. "You're right, then remember to tell me next time you come to the hospital."
"I will."
Pearl successfully concealed it from him. She also learned from Oscar that the Collins family and the Brown family had not been in contact for a long time.
Despite this, she observed no evident conflicts between them.
It occurred to her that their lack of interaction might stem from political affiliations, perhaps making it inconvenient for them to engage too closely in business matters.
However, Felix had retired and was very easygoing, not much different from an ordinary elderly person.
Oscar went home with Pearl.
Back in the bedroom, Pearl changed into comfortable pajamas and lay down on the bed pretending that she was having her period.
Normally, when she had her period, she would lie weakly as soon as she got home.
However, she didn't want Oscar to suspect anything, so she forced herself to rest.
As footsteps approached and the door opened, Pearl saw Oscar enter. Subconsciously, she lay flat, closed her eyes, making him think she was having her period.
Oscar stood beside the bed, observing her pale face as she lay sickly in bed.
It seemed that her menstruation was making her uncomfortable.
He sat on the edge of the bed and whispered, "Go back to sleep later. Here, have some hot chocolate."
Hearing the voice, Pearl finally opened her eyes and saw Oscar sitting beside her, watching her all the time.
And there was a cup of hot chocolate on the bedside table.
She slowly sat up.
Oscar adjusted the pillow and asked, "Does it feel comfortable like this?"
Pearl looked at him intently and replied, "Yes."
Oscar brought the hot chocolate to her and placed it in front of her.
Pearl held the cup and asked, "Why did you make hot chocolate for me?"
"You're going through your period," Oscar explained. "During this time, girls often experience discomfort and weakness. Drinking hot chocolate can help alleviate your pain."
