Chapter 706 Does It Really Have to Be This Way?

"Desiree, do we really have to be at each other's throats?" Harold saw nothing but coldness in her eyes, and his heart grew colder bit by bit.

Right now, he desperately wished he could go back to the past. Desiree used to look at him with such passionate love, like the warm sunshine at noon.

But now, everything had changed.

Desiree sneered, "Look how far we've come. Isn't this all your choice? Harold, you made your bed, now lie in it. You can't have it both ways."

From the moment he chose to listen to Ember and kept meeting with Isolde, there was no going back for them.

She wasn't magnanimous enough to tolerate her husband recognizing a sister outside, let alone his mother constantly trying to push a mistress on him.

Whoever wanted to live this life could have it, she wasn't going to make herself suffer again.

"But Desiree, I chose you. I've already sent people to handle the online rumors, and I can deal with my mom too. Can we go back to the way things were?" Harold pleaded.

Desiree broke a twig from a nearby tree and placed it in his hand. "Can you put it back together? No, just like a broken mirror can't be mended. We're completely over. Take your lover and leave."

She found it all quite meaningless now. Love, marriage, they were all just illusions. Desiree had sworn off men entirely, having grown weary of the tumult and heartbreak they inevitably brought.

Harold wanted to chase after her, but Isolde clung tightly to his arm, using all her strength to hold him in place. "Harold, please don't go. You've already been beaten like this, don't go back for more humiliation!"

Harold forcefully shook off her arm, and Isolde fell to the ground, clutching his leg and crying out in pain.

Liam lost patience and turned to chase after Desiree.

He knew Desiree couldn't forget Harold in a short time, so he feared she would be hurt again by what just happened. And Daryl followed as well.

At the gate, only Harold and Isolde were left.

Harold bent down and gripped her chin tightly, his eyes filled with coldness. "Isolde, you've really gone to great lengths to drive a wedge between us. Did Mom send you?"

"No, this has nothing to do with her. It was my idea. I was afraid you'd get hurt, Harold. Your face is all bruised, which must hurt a lot." Isolde reached out to touch the bruise on his face.

Harold twisted her wrist back, applying more and more pressure.

A sharp pain shot through her, and Isolde could no longer manage her expressions. She grimaced in pain, unable to care about anything else.

For a moment, she even thought her bone might break.

Finally, Harold let her go. "You know my heart belongs only to Desiree. I will never accept you. You'd better stop using those underhanded tactics. My parents may like you, so let them marry you. I will never treat you kindly. You'd better think it through."

He would never marry her, and even if he did, he wouldn't touch her.

So what was Isolde after?

Was she just desperate, enjoying pleasing others, and liked being ridiculed every day?

"Harold." Isolde watched him leave.

She didn't chase after him but silently stood up from the ground. Harold's disgust for her was so obvious that she could clearly see it. Yet, despite the sting of his rejection, Ember's promises lingered in her mind, a seductive lure she couldn't dismiss.

As long as they could get married and she could have a child, that child would be the future heir of the Lewis family, inheriting the entire company.

Oscar also treated Harold like family. With their relationship, Harold's company would surely thrive. If she could endure the initial grievances, a wealthy life awaited her.

Harold was a good man. If she could win him over, there would be endless benefits. Isolde had thought it through, so she would never give up.

Meanwhile, Desiree returned to her room, closed the door, and looked at the scenery outside, tears streaming down her face.

She kept telling herself that Harold wasn't worth her tears, but feelings weren't something one could control.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. It must be Liam.

Desiree composed herself before opening the door, but it was Daryl standing outside.

"Desiree, are you okay? I didn't want to disturb you, but Harold and his lover went too far. You know Mr. Sandvik's character, he loves you so much, he can't take this kind of shock." Daryl sighed. "I know you must be feeling terrible right now. If there's anything bothering you, just talk to me. You'll feel better if you let it out."

"I'm tired. I just want to sleep now." Desiree made an excuse to brush him off.

She was in a bad mood, and she didn't want to interact with him too much. So she really couldn't accept his advances.

"Then get some rest." Daryl's tone was noticeably more disappointed.

Unable to take advantage of Desiree's vulnerability, he didn't idle. After going downstairs, he sought out Liam and Tessa, continuing to sow discord.

He talked until it was late, and only then did he leave.

Tessa saw him out. "Daryl, thank you for being here today. Harold was really outrageous."

"As long as Desiree can get rid of that unfaithful man, everything I've done is worth it." Daryl smiled.

After he left, Desiree stayed in her room for a while longer, still feeling stifled.

So she wanted to go out for a drink to clear her mind.

Liam and Tessa had already gone to their rooms, so Desiree quietly left the villa. She drove towards her downtown apartment, passing by a large bar on the way.

From the entrance, she liked the lighting and atmosphere inside.

Then Desiree stopped the car and walked towards the bar, not noticing the familiar car parked nearby in the night.
