Chapter 897

Lyra's grip loosened instantly, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What did you just say?"

How could they know?

Could it be that intern? But she had already left the hospital.

The nurse waved her hand and sneered, "You haven't heard? Check online. Someone's already spilled all your dirty secrets."

Lyra stumbled back a few steps, her face pale, barely managing to stay upright.

She quickly pulled out her phone.

Her movements were swift, tinged with urgency and caution. Before opening it, she silently hoped countless times that it wasn't what she feared.

But reality was cruel.

As soon as she unlocked her phone, a flood of information and trending topics popped up.

The word "spy" stung her eyes, and she felt as if all the strength had been drained from her limbs. She nearly collapsed to the ground.

The nurse's voice was dripping with sarcasm. "If anyone's Mr. Gray's favorite, it's our Dr. Cole. Too bad all that loyalty was wasted on a backstabber. Who would've thought someone who looks so decent would secretly sell others' photos?"

Lyra's nails dug into her flesh, but she felt no pain.

The surrounding mockery and ridicule drilled into her ears, tormenting her conscience. In her mind, all she could see was Jeffery's disgusted look when he discovered she had drugged him.

His face overlapped with those around her, and their words seemed to come from his mouth.

"Lyra, how could you be such a traitor? After everything I've done for you, this is how you repay me. I really misjudged you!"

"If I had known, I wouldn't have given you special treatment."

"Leave now, don't stay here and be an eyesore."

Suddenly, a steady and powerful voice interrupted the crowd's jeers. "What's going on here?"

"Mr. Gray, we weren't... It's her, yes, Lyra came to cause trouble."

"Lyra?"

Jeffery's gaze fell on Lyra.

At this moment, she no longer had the brilliance that once caught his eye. She was dull and lifeless.

She didn't even dare to lift her head at the sound of his voice, let alone let her eyes light up as they usually did.

Realizing what he was thinking, Jeffery frowned.

Why would he think that?

Jeffery's expression grew colder as he looked at the nurses. "Abandoning your posts during duty hours, I'll make sure you're properly disciplined."

The group turned as pale as paper.

After sending them away, Lyra still stood there, dazed.

Jeffery waited for a long time, but didn't hear the familiar voice from his memories. He frowned and looked over.

Unexpectedly, he saw her red-rimmed eyes and the tears she was trying to hide by keeping her head down.

Jeffery's heart skipped a beat. When he spoke again, his tone was unexpectedly gentle, even to himself. "Why are you crying? Just because of a few words from others? If you can't handle this, how will you face debates with other top doctors in the future?"

"I'm not."

"Then wipe away your tears. The Lyra I know wouldn't be defeated by such a small setback."

Lyra sniffled, turned away, and used a tissue to dry her tears before turning back.

But her eyes were still red, and Jeffery couldn't help but think she looked like a rabbit.

Lyra felt the need to explain, "I'm not upset because of what they said. It's something else."

She didn't say the rest.

But Jeffery had already seen the trending topics online. He had known everything for days, ever since she told him.

The internet had not only exposed her spying but also her past of working multiple jobs day and night. There were videos and photos.

The person who posted claimed she came from a poor family and only got into the company by clinging to a big shot.

That big shot was him.

No one at the hospital knew about Lyra's past, not even Jeffery, until she explained it to him.

So, the only ones who could expose this were her family.

Thinking of this, even Jeffery's gaze softened with pity.

She had worked tirelessly to earn money for the Hill family, but they didn't appreciate it. Once they had squeezed her dry, they turned their backs on her.

Lyra was like a ball, kicked around by everyone.

Jeffery's eyes darkened. "You don't need to care about what people say online. Just do what you need to do. If you're worried about my opinion, let me be clear—I don't care. It's not your fault."

Lyra stared at him, her nose tingling, and the tears she had just held back threatened to spill again.

"Really?"

"Yes." Jeffery's face showed a hint of helplessness.

One sentence moved her so much. How bad had her life been before?

This helpless experience made Jeffery feel a bit of empathy. He had felt the same way when he was under RavenWing's control, powerless.

Back then, he longed for someone to understand him, even just to talk to him.

Instead, he was treated like a tool, only useful for testing drugs, less valued than a pet.

Jeffery squinted, recalling unpleasant memories, adding a rare touch of coldness to his demeanor.

Lyra was a bit scared of this Jeffery and asked cautiously, "Mr. Gray, what are you thinking about?"

"Nothing."

Jeffery snapped out of his memories, returning to his usual calm.

Seeing this, Lyra didn't ask further. After a moment of silence, they both spoke at the same time.

Seeing Jeffery hesitate, she relented, "You go first."

Jeffery's eyes flickered. "What are you planning to do?"

Even he didn't even know why he asked. Maybe it was their shared experiences that made him feel a bit of sympathy for Lyra.

Jeffery felt an urge to intervene.

Since coming here, Jeffery had always maintained an outsider's perspective, observing but not interfering.

He appeared gentle but was actually out of place, like a misfit.

But at this moment, he wanted to help Lyra.

Lyra thought for a few seconds, her eyes shifting from confusion to determination. "I'm going back to the Hill family."

Jeffery was surprised. "You're going back? I thought after all this, you'd want to avoid them."

Lyra's mouth curved into a bitter smile. "Yes, but it was once my home. And I want to ask them..."

She wanted to ask the Hill family what she had done wrong, where she had fallen short.

But most importantly, Lyra knew Aaron couldn't have done this alone. Someone must have conspired with him.

She needed to find out who!
