Chapter 658 Not Accepting Any Woman
Ember saw Wesley backing down and couldn't take it anymore. She nudged him with her elbow. "Come on, it's just Jack Daniel's. Didn't your old buddy give you a bottle last year?"
She was trying to say it wasn't a big deal and wanted him to stop acting like it was.
Wesley thought for a second and then said seriously, "This is premium Jack Daniel's, it's different."
Ember's face fell.
Seeing her reaction, Wesley reluctantly shut up.
But after that, Ember couldn't bring herself to tell Desiree to take the gift back. She just cleared her throat. "Alright, we'll take it. Harold's dad doesn't have many hobbies, but he likes this stuff."
As she spoke, she gave Desiree a knowing look, half-smiling. "You did your homework, huh?"
Desiree's face stiffened. Anyone would feel awkward having their good intentions misunderstood like that.
She clenched her fist. "I just thought it was polite to find out what the elders like."
Ember sneered.
Maybe because Desiree's gift was spot on, Wesley couldn't just stand by and watch Ember keep treating her badly. He suggested, "Come on, even if you're not happy, their marriage is still a fact. She came all this way, so cut her some slack."
Ember frowned, clearly annoyed. "Whose side are you on?"
Wesley sulkily shut his mouth, obviously scared of her.
But his advice wasn't totally useless. At least Ember didn't kick Desiree out and even let her stay for dinner.
But that was it.
After dinner, Ember sent her off, saying before she left, "If it's not important, don't come again. Our family isn't for someone as special as you."
Then she shut the door.
After that, Desiree came by a few more times but never saw Harold's parents.
She felt pretty down and was always distracted when she got back.
Over time, Harold noticed something was off. He didn't ask but quickly figured out why she was so down.
One day, Desiree was about to drop off some documents at the office when she heard Harold's angry voice from inside. "I've said it before, I won't accept any woman other than Desiree."
His tone was icy. "So, Mom, stop trying to set me up with your friend's daughter. I'm not interested."
"Harold! Why are you so stubborn? What's so great about her? She could be flirting with other men right now. Do you want a kid that's not even yours?"
This instantly set Harold off.
His eyes blazed with anger, making him look even more intimidating. "What if I told you Desiree and I already have a child?"
He glanced at the ongoing call and hung up.
"What? Wait, don't hang up, explain what you said." Ember called again right after he hung up.
He didn't answer any of her calls.
He just tossed his phone aside, put it on Do Not Disturb, and ignored how many times Ember tried to reach him.
"Ms. Sandvik, why aren't you going in?"
Desiree was startled to see Magnolia Belle, one of the employees, behind her. She forced a smile. "Oh, it's nothing. Can you take these documents in for me? I just remembered I have something to do."
Handing the papers to Magnolia, Desiree quickly left before she could react.
She ran out of the administrative building, feeling a wave of sadness wash over her.
She wandered aimlessly through the streets, not knowing where to go.
The endless stream of cars and people made her feel lost. Watching them, she felt a sense of confusion.
Just then, her phone rang.
She instinctively answered, surprised to hear Ember's voice. "Desiree, are you free now?" Her voice sounded normal. "If you are, I'd like to take you somewhere."
Fifteen minutes later, Desiree found herself standing in front of a gynecology clinic, stunned.
There were fewer people in the hospital on a weekday, especially in gynecology. The nurse quickly called her, "Next, Desiree."
Desiree stood up but hesitated.
Ember kindly took her bag, smiling gently. "Go for the check-up, I'll hold your things."
Desiree was puzzled.
'Why did Ember suddenly bring me to gynecology? Why did her attitude change so quickly?'
But in the end, Desiree didn't ask anything.
The results came out quickly.
The doctor glanced at the lab report, smiling warmly at Desiree. "Congratulations, you're pregnant."
Ember's expression instantly became complicated, a mix of happiness and disappointment. She frowned, unwilling to accept it. "Doctor, is she really pregnant?"
The doctor simply handed her the lab report. "See for yourself, you can even see the fetus on the ultrasound. It's developing well."
The image on the report left Ember speechless.
Leaving the hospital, she personally drove Desiree back, even buying some supplements on the way, and offered to cook for her.
But Desiree refused, "Mrs. Lewis, you really don't have to do this," she said cautiously.
Someone who hated her suddenly being so kind was hard for her to accept.
Ember knew it was hard for her to accept in such a short time, so she said, "It's okay, take the supplements home and have the maid cook them for you. It's getting late, I'll head back."
Watching Ember leave, Desiree struggled to carry the two bags of supplements home.
When Harold came back that night, he saw the supplements in the living room and asked who brought them.
Desiree hesitated. "It was from your mother. She accompanied me for a check-up today."
Harold was stunned, his brows furrowing instantly, but he couldn't say anything bad about Ember. He just said, "If you feel uncomfortable, you can refuse next time."
"No." Desiree shook her head, not wanting him to worry, and smiled at him. "Don't worry, I think she is being nice to me. Look, she even brought all these things for me today."
Harold glanced at the supplements again, his frown finally easing.
Desiree lowered her head to eat but was distracted.
The next day, Ember came to visit personally.
When Natalia opened the door and saw her, she was stunned. "May I ask who you are?"
