Chapter 88 The People That Night
He was reminding Pearl to take care of her husband and not let him be taken away by someone else.
Pearl didn't want Felix to worry while he was sick, and she also worried about her relationship with Oscar. She smiled and said, "I know, Oscar has already told me. Felix, it's late and it's chilly outside, let's go inside."
"Okay." Felix didn't say anything else.
Pearl took Felix to the ward and said goodbye to him. She was hesitating whether to go to the obstetrics and gynecology department.
But then Seraphina called her, "Ms. Harris, can you come to the hospital? I have something to tell you."
Pearl decided to go.
Harold was standing at the door, and when he saw Pearl coming, he was a bit shocked.
He seemed afraid of her being there.
"Secretary Pearl, why are you here?" Harold said.
Pearl remained calm and asked, "What happened?"
"I'll call President Oscar first and ask him to come over," he said cautiously, which made Pearl suspicious.
"Is there something I can't know?" she asked.
Harold hesitated whether to say it or not, but looking at Seraphina in the hospital room, he sighed and said, "You should go inside and ask her yourself."
Pearl turned her head and looked at Seraphina inside. Her complexion was not very good, but she had a smile on her face, seemingly happy.
Seraphina looked up and said, "Ms. Harris, you're here." She wanted to get out of bed but then pulled her feet back. "Ms. Harris, I can't get out of bed now. President Oscar told me to rest well, so I won't get out of bed to greet you."
Harold listened to her words and felt the innuendo. Why didn't he realize it before?
Pearl was displeased with what she heard, but she didn't show any emotion on her face and calmly asked, "Where did you fall?"
"I just got a minor injury," Seraphina replied as she smiled faintly. "It's nothing serious."
Pearl couldn't help but wonder, 'Is it necessary to be hospitalized for a minor injury?'
Suddenly, Seraphina burst out, "Actually, Ms. Harris, the truth is, I'm just pregnant!"
Hearing this, Pearl was shocked. She couldn't believe her eyes as she looked at Seraphina.
She's pregnant? How is that possible?
Seraphina observed Pearl's shocked expression and anticipated such a reaction, yet she remained resolute in her truth: she was indeed pregnant. This was the unvarnished truth. "I've been pregnant for over a month. The doctor said my health is not good and I lack nutrition, which could affect the baby in my belly. That's why President Oscar had me hospitalized to protect the baby."
Harold knew about this situation and hesitated whether to tell Pearl or not.
Oscar had fathered a child with another woman, a fact that would inevitably come to light for Pearl, his wife. Harold reasoned that it was best not to conceal the truth from Pearl to spare her from greater pain in the future. Pearl needed to brace herself mentally.
Pearl looked at Harold, who looked hesitant, and said, "Ms. Brooks… she is indeed pregnant."
Pearl was puzzled. How could she and Seraphina be pregnant at the same time? Did Seraphina really sleep with Oscar?
Seraphina interjected, "This time, I'm pregnant with President Oscar's child. Ms. Harris, you shouldn't stop me now, right?"
She always saw Pearl as her love rival. Seraphina thought that Pearl was the one getting in their way, causing her to grow distant from Oscar.
Getting pregnant with Oscar's child might make Pearl less wary of her. Seraphina had already been checked in the hospital, so it definitely wasn't a lie.
Pearl looked at Seraphina again and asked, "How... how long have you known Oscar?" Seraphina being pregnant with Oscar's child must have had some kind of catalyst. She must have slept with Oscar.
Seraphina didn't understand yet, but when Pearl asked her like this, she replied, "Ms. Harris, even though I can't compare to you, I've known him for a while too."
She looked at Harold and smiled, saying, "Assistant Harold, can you leave? I want to have a private conversation with Ms. Harris."
Harold glanced at Pearl.
Pearl nodded and said, "You can leave."
Harold closed the door, leaving the two women in the room alone.
Seraphina lifted the blanket and sat on the edge of the bed, eagerly touching her belly.
"Ms. Harris, I know that President Oscar has someone he likes."
Pearl clenched her fist.
Seraphina lowered her head and slowly spoke, "President Oscar's pity toward me is also because of that person. I have to be like her for President Oscar to like me. Even so, I'm content. I don't ask for much; just to have President Oscar's child is enough."
Saying this, Seraphina looked at Pearl and said, "Ms. Harris, you are well aware that the person's name is Haley."
Pearl's face turned pale. Even Seraphina knew about this.
"Has Oscar ever shown favor toward you, Ms. Harris?" Seraphina asked again.
Her question was a disclosure of truth.
Pearl stared into Seraphina's eyes. There was a blind confidence in her eyes as if Pearl had never received any favor.
"Does it matter?" Pearl responded evenly.
Seraphina persisted, "I believe it does."
Pearl started laughing.
"It doesn't matter. The world can go on without anyone. Maybe even without Oscar..." Pearl reflected on the challenges she had faced over the years and continued, "I can become the best version of myself."
Her words surprised Seraphina. She didn't expect her reaction to be so indifferent.
When she liked someone, she would do whatever it took to get him. That was the true meaning of liking someone for Seraphina.
How could Pearl give up?
Seraphina doubted that Pearl was trying to deceive her again.
Now, Seraphina was satisfied. With a child on the way and security, the only thing she doesn't believe was Pearl's claim of being so open-minded. "I hope you can say that in the future too," she said.
After saying that, Seraphina looked up and called out, "President Oscar."
At some point, Oscar stood at the door.
His expression didn't look good as he walked in.
He didn't look at Pearl, but asked Seraphina, "Are you feeling better?"
Seraphina replied, "I'm much better."
"Hmm," Oscar added, "The doctor said you need to supplement your nutrition, so I'll have the maid make you some more food later."
Seraphina said happily, "Okay, thank you."
Upon hearing this, Pearl felt a slight unease and couldn't bear their conversation, so she said, "I'll leave first."
She turned and pushed open the door, wanting to leave immediately.
Harold, concerned, called out, "Secretary Pearl."
"President Oscar," he prompted, urging Oscar to follow after her.
Oscar didn't do anything and coldly said, "Hasn't she said that she can be the best version of herself without me? Let her be herself!"
He walked out of the ward, displeased.
"President Oscar," Seraphina called out once more, realizing she hadn't had the chance to show him the ultrasound image of their child before he left.
Feeling a twinge of disappointment, she couldn't shake the sense that Oscar's departure was somehow linked to Pearl. Was his mood influenced by her?
After all, Pearl was not just his secretary; did he also value her opinions?
Seraphina didn't want to dwell on it.
She still wanted to share this good news with her mother, to tell her that she had finally made it.
Dialing her mother's number, she greeted, "Hello, Mom..."
"Seraphina, there's something I wanted to tell you." The person on the phone sounded anxious. "You mistook the person, that night, he wasn't President Oscar..."
