Chapter 672 Taking Root and Sprouting
"Hasn't Emily's fever already gone down?" Lila glanced at the bundled-up Emily, feeling a surge of jealousy.
Emily had already stolen everyone's attention, so why did she have to take Christopher's too?
She just wanted to play games with Christopher, but he wouldn't even agree to that!
"Yeah, the fever's down, but I'm still worried." Christopher's patience was wearing thin, and he shot Lila an annoyed look. "I told you, if you want to play, play by yourself. Stop bugging me. Emily is my sister, of course I'm worried about her!"
He didn't like Lila as much as he used to.
Even though Emily was his sister and not Lila's, they were supposed to be a family and live together forever.
So if Emily had a fever, shouldn't she be worried? How could she still want to play and even drag him along?
"Christopher..." Lila was stunned.
Christopher had just pushed her away. He had never been so harsh with her before.
Her eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have bothered you. I shouldn't have asked you to play with me. Can I help you take care of Emily instead?"
"Sure, you can. I didn't mean to be harsh. I just don't feel like playing games." Christopher moved aside.
Although Emily was very young and didn't understand much, she didn't know that Lila was the one who caused her high fever and almost killed her.
But kids had a pretty good sixth sense.
The moment Lila got close, Emily started crying loudly, and the crying got worse and worse.
"Emily, don't cry. I'm here, don't cry," Christopher gently patted her, trying to soothe her.
But it was no use. As long as Lila didn't leave, Emily kept crying.
Soon, the rest of the family was drawn by the crying and gathered around, leaving Lila standing there helplessly.
Tears streamed down her face. "I didn't do anything."
She hadn't even spoken loudly. She just wanted to check on Emily and help Christopher take care of her. Why did Emily suddenly cry so hard?
No one answered her.
Pearl finally managed to calm Emily down and put her back in the crib.
Lila wanted to go over again, but Christopher stopped her in time. Seeing her confused look, he told her, "Don't go near Emily for now. Go play with the blocks or other toys."
"Why?" Lila had a suspicion in her heart. "Do you dislike me? You said before that you considered me your sister and would protect me forever. It hasn't been that long, and I'm not a dangerous person. Do you really need to guard against me like this?"
She wasn't planning to hurt Emily now!
Christopher quickly wiped her tears with a tissue. "That's not what I mean. It's just that whenever you go near, Emily cries, and I can't calm her down. I have to get Mom, and she's already very tired. I want her to rest more."
Earlier at the hospital, he had learned from the nurse that Pearl had given Emily a lot of blood. Even though Pearl got a blood transfusion afterward, the whole ordeal must have left her super weak.
He really didn't want to burden her any more.
"Everyone else can go near her, but not me. Isn't that just excluding me? What kind of family is that? You never really wanted me to be part of it." Lila felt more and more upset.
'If Emily disappears from this world, then Christopher will only have me as a sister. He will only be good to me, and all his attention will be on me. He will never be harsh to me because of someone else.'
She should have given Emily more medicine earlier.
Right, the small bottle of medicine was still in her backpack. Those bad people said it was very potent. Just half a bottle could kill an adult, and for a child, half the dose would be enough.
Just a few more drops, and Emily would be gone forever.
Then she could not only see her biological mother but also have Christopher all to herself.
"Don't overthink it. We are a family. Because of it, we need to take care of Emily and be considerate of Mom," Christopher continued to explain.
But no matter what he said, Lila couldn't understand.
If they were a family, why did Emily cry when she saw her but not others?
And why could everyone else see Emily, but not her? If they were a family, they should be treated equally.
"Anyway, you play by yourself for now. I'll help Mom take care of Emily. When Emily gets better, I'll play with you. We can even go to the aquarium together," Christopher added.
"Will Emily come with us?" Lila asked.
Christopher thought for a moment. "She probably will."
"What if Emily cries and fusses and doesn't want to go?" Lila asked.
"Then we'll go another day," Christopher answered quickly.
Because they had plenty of time, no need to rush.
The more Lila listened, the more disheartened she felt. As long as Emily was around, she would always be second.
Even their plans could be changed by Emily's crying.
Lila had an idea.
While Pearl went to her room and Oscar went to the kitchen to cook, she used the same trick to get rid of Calliope. "Calliope, I really want to eat your cake, and Christopher wants some too."
"Mr. Brown is already cooking. Why don't you have dinner first and eat the cake tomorrow morning?" Calliope was reluctant to leave.
Although Emily's fever had gone down, after what happened, she wanted to stay by her side 24/7 to prevent any accidents.
"Calliope, if there's no cake, I won't be able to eat anything tonight. Don't worry about Emily. Christopher and I are here. Can't we take care of her?" Lila patted her chest.
Calliope still didn't move.
Lila's last words hit the mark. She really didn't trust them. They were just kids themselves. How could she expect two kids to take care of another kid?
But seeing the tears in Lila's eyes, Calliope couldn't bear to refuse. Besides, at this age, kids needed to eat well to grow.
