Chapter 279 Why Is She More Important Than Your Life?

Pearl said, "It's not just me helping you. You've got the skills, and we came up with this idea together. If it were someone else, you would achieve the same result with your idea. Plus, helping you helps me too."

Eileen laughed. "I couldn't have done this without you. It's fate. Anyway, I gotta get to work. Let's catch up later."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Emma leaned on the table and winked at Pearl. "Pearl, you're amazing at everything. You could even be Eileen's agent."

"You're giving me too much credit," Pearl replied modestly. "Eileen's success was bound to happen. Traditional media might not do it, but short videos definitely can."

There was no need to rely on traditional media to get exposure anymore.

Things are different now; the first to try something new always stands out.

At quitting time, Pearl turned to Emma. "Time to go home, let's go."

"Okay." Emma packed her things. "We don't live in the same direction, or I'd go home with you."

Pearl smiled. "See you tomorrow."

Emma waved. "See you tomorrow!"

They parted ways.

Pearl walked alone for a bit, not hailing a cab right away. She needed to stretch after sitting all day.

Lately, she noticed her belly getting a bit bigger.

She touched her belly, smiling. Growing with the baby inside her was a happy experience.

Not far away, a car quietly followed her.

Pearl occasionally brushed dust off her shoes and took a few photos with her phone.

These actions amused him.

Jeffery watched with a smile, the tear mole at the corner of his eye adding to his charm.

He glanced at the fresh strawberries on the passenger seat and slowly followed her.

After a while, Pearl decided to hail a cab home.

The taxi pulled up. She got in and gave the address.

The taxi drove off.

Inside, Pearl smelled perfume and looked at the driver.

Barbara turned her head slightly, trying to hide.

This made Pearl suspicious. "Hello."

"Hello," the driver, a woman, replied.

Pearl had seen female drivers before, but Barbara, with her face covered, made her wary.

If she wore perfume, she must care about her appearance, but covering her face made the perfume pointless.

Moreover, why would a driver wear perfume? Pearl felt uneasy.

"I suddenly have something to do. Just drop me off here," Pearl said.

"Aren't you going home? The trip's started, it can't be cancelled. I'll get you home quickly," Barbara replied.

Pearl's face changed. "How do you know I'm going home?"

Barbara stiffened, then smiled. "It's late, you must be going home from work."

Pearl didn't buy it. What kind of driver ignored the customer's request? "Stop the car, I want to get out now!"

Barbara didn't budge.

As the car sped up, Pearl's sense of danger grew. "Can't you hear me? I want to get out!"

Barbara refused to let her out.

Pearl knew she couldn't predict what dangers lay ahead with Barbara.

Pearl boldly reached for the steering wheel. "Let me out!"

Barbara, ready for this, struck Pearl's shoulder, who immediately passed out.

Barbara took off her hat, a smug smile on her face. Mission accomplished!

But before she could celebrate, she noticed a car following her closely. She sped up.

The road was busy, and as she accelerated, the other car followed recklessly.

Barbara was in a tight spot. She couldn't go faster without risking an accident.

The car behind caught up.

They were in a standoff. As they neared a bridge, Barbara's car was forced to the side.

In the next second, she would fall into the river.

She had to slam on the brakes.

The car behind did a drift, blocking her path.

Jeffery got out without hesitation.

Barbara, after adjusting herself, also got out and questioned, "Why did you follow me? Didn't you say you had an urgent matter? You're always punctual, never early or late. Are you more anxious than me?"

Jeffery looked at Barbara, eyes narrowed with hidden danger. "Is the pregnant woman you mentioned her?"

Barbara adjusted her hair, messed up by the hat. "Are you questioning me?"

Jeffery looked at the unconscious Pearl in the car. "What did you do to her?"

Barbara's smile widened. "Just knocked her out, no drugs."

Jeffery didn't ask further. He opened the car door and carried Pearl out.

Seeing this, Barbara was shocked and grabbed his hand. "Jeffery, what are you doing? The boss wants her dead and all her organs sold. This is our mission!"

Jeffery looked at the unconscious Pearl in his arms, shook off Barbara's hand coldly. "I don't need you to tell me what to do!"

Barbara's expression darkened. "Are you insane? Do you want to die?"

Jeffery looked at her, no longer hiding. "Barbara, she can't die!"

"Why?" Barbara didn't understand. "We are never allowed to fail. Are you willing to fail the mission for her?"

Jeffery's eyes were cold and determined. "You can take my life if you want!"

Barbara's face paled, her tone growing more intense. "Jeffery, where's your ruthlessness? You never hesitated to kill before. How can you suddenly become so weak for her?"

She glanced at the basket of strawberries in his car. "You used your hard-earned commission to buy a farm just to grow strawberries for her?"

Jeffery remained silent.

"Jeffery, no!" Barbara became serious, warning him, "She's the boss's target. She must die. If she doesn't, we will!"

Jeffery's blue eyes were indifferent, life and death seemed unimportant to him. "Just put the blame on me."

With that, Jeffery put Pearl in his car.

Barbara said, "I should have disfigured her so you wouldn't recognize her. Then you could focus on your work. Jeffery, I despise you!"

She had planned to do that, so Jeffery only needed to handle the dissection.

She knew Pearl was special. Her death would cut off all of Jeffery's escape routes.

However, she was too slow. Before she could disfigure Pearl, Jeffery had already noticed.

"Why?" Barbara didn't understand why Jeffery showed mercy towards her. With red eyes, she asked, "Who is she, Jeffery? Why is she more important than your life?"
