Chapter 712 Doing Homework
When Pearl got in the car after school, she noticed her bag's zipper was open. She casually zipped it up. "Hey, Christopher, are we heading straight home, or do you want to go out for a bit?"
"Let's just go home, Mom. I'm kinda tired and need some rest. Got classes tomorrow," Christopher said, buckling his seatbelt.
Pearl nodded in agreement. They chatted while the driver took them home, and before they knew it, they were there.
Once inside, Christopher took off his coat, changed into his slippers, and ran over to Pearl. "Mom, I'm going upstairs to do my homework. I'll finish before dinner."
"Homework?" Pearl found it odd. Christopher was only in preschool; he shouldn't have homework.
She knew the teacher meant well, but she worried it might be too much too soon.
"Yeah, the teacher said we need to get used to doing homework now, so we don't struggle in elementary school. It's not hard, so I can finish it quickly," Christopher explained.
Even though he seemed fine with it, Pearl decided to follow him upstairs to check it out.
In his room, Christopher pulled out a notebook and showed it to Pearl. "Mom, we have two assignments: one for writing and one for math."
Pearl flipped through the notebook. The writing assignment had simple words, and the math was basic addition and subtraction.
"Christopher, can you handle this homework? If you need help, I can explain it now," Pearl said, pulling up a chair.
Christopher quickly finished a page of math problems and said, "Mom, I got this."
"Alright, take your time. I'll be downstairs. After dinner, I'll check your work," Pearl said, trusting him and not wanting to hover.
Pearl didn't want to disturb Christopher, going downstairs to the living room and playing with Emily for a while. Later that evening, Oscar came home with a cup of milk tea, Pearl's favorite.
"Emily, Daddy's home. Say hi to Daddy," Pearl said, lifting Emily's little hand.
Emily waved and smiled.
"Emily, you know Daddy?" Oscar said, taking her from Pearl.
While soothing Emily, he apologized to Pearl, "Sorry, I was swamped today and couldn't pick you up, so I sent the driver."
"No need to apologize. It's fine. Whether you're home early or late, it's okay that we're together," Pearl said, not upset at all.
Oscar was busy with important stuff, not goofing off.
She wasn't that petty.
"I always knew I hit the jackpot with you. Being with you is my greatest fortune," Oscar said, holding her hand.
He suddenly noticed Christopher wasn't around and asked, "Where's Christopher? Is he napping in his room?"
"No, he's doing his homework," Pearl replied.
Oscar felt a mix of emotions and sighed. "Christopher is really growing up. Feels like just yesterday he was a tiny baby, and now he's doing homework. Soon, he'll be going to school on his own."
"That's a good thing. He's serious about learning and doing well. Besides, it's just homework. Why are you getting all sentimental?" Pearl teased, patting his shoulder.
Emily then touched Oscar's chin and handed him her favorite toy. She loved the toy, but she loved Oscar even more, so she wanted to share it with him.
Oscar took the toy, squeezed it, and felt its soft texture. But he still felt a bit melancholic. "Emily is so small now, but one day, she'll grow up. Just thinking about her getting married and having kids with another man makes me feel reluctant."
Pearl laughed at his words.
If Emily were an adult with a boyfriend, he might have a reason to feel this way.
"But Emily is so young, not even a year old. It's way too early to worry about her growing up and starting a family. Let's make dinner first. Christopher should be done with his homework by now. I'll go check on him," Pearl said as she got up to leave.
Watching her walk away, Oscar remembered the pain she endured during childbirth.
He thought, 'No matter how rich or how good the medical care, childbirth is still painful because of biology.'
If Emily found a good partner, it would be fine. But if she ended up with a bad guy, he would be heartbroken.
So he decided that when Emily was older, he would tell her stories about strong, independent women instead of traditional prince and princess tales, to prevent her from becoming too obsessed with romance.
Meanwhile, Pearl didn't enter the room directly but knocked on the door. After getting a response, she went in. "Christopher, how's your homework going? Dad is making dinner, and we'll eat in about half an hour."
"Mom, I'm done. Come see how many points I can get," Christopher said happily, handing the notebook to Pearl.
Pearl looked it over carefully. Though the writing was a bit messy, it was clear he had put in a lot of effort. The math problems were all correct, not a single mistake.
"Christopher, you're amazing," Pearl said, giving him a thumbs up, "Take a break, and then we'll have dinner."
"Mom, I want to go downstairs to see Emily," Christopher said, not wanting to stay in his room alone.
He held Pearl's hand as they went downstairs and ran to Emily, holding her hand tightly.
Pearl went into the kitchen to help Oscar as usual.
Suddenly, Christopher's voice came from the living room. "Mom, where did we put our red flowers?"
"In the bag. I'll get them for you now," Pearl answered.
