Chapter 937 Using Connections
Despite Lyra's attempts to brush it off, the gossip around the hospital didn't stop.
No one knew where the rumors started, but people speculated she had something going on with Jeffery.
Mia was livid. "Seriously, those people are just jealous. Why can't they say it to your face instead of sneaking around behind your back?"
Lyra, trying to calm her down, handed her a cup of coffee. "Don't get worked up. Here, have some coffee."
She had just bought some coffee beans online, supposedly authentic Brazilian beans, though she wasn't sure. She hadn't tried it yet, so it was a good chance to taste something new.
Mia took a sip, then frowned. "They're talking about you! Aren't you even a little bit angry?"
Lyra shook her head. "What's there to be angry about? I've seen it all before."
When she first heard the rumors, she even felt a bit nostalgic. Back at Willow Creek Hospital, people said she had connections with Jeffery, and the gossip was even nastier. So, she wasn't angry. She was used to it.
Mia felt a pang of sympathy. She patted Lyra's head. "Poor thing, you've been through so much, sweetheart."
"Cut it out," Lyra rolled her eyes, annoyed. They were close enough now to drop the formalities.
"Isn't today the day your results come out?"
It really was! If Mia hadn't mentioned it, Lyra would have forgotten. She quickly opened her laptop to check her email.
Sure enough, there was an email in her inbox.
With a mix of nervousness and excitement, she clicked on it and then cheered. "I passed, I passed!"
Lyra was overjoyed. All the rumors were nothing now.
What could be better than passing an exam?
Mia was genuinely happy for her, too. Thinking about the gossipers, she snorted. "They should all take a good look. Saying you don't have what it takes—huh, can someone without talent get into grad school?"
Lyra tried to calm her down. "Alright, alright, don't bother with those people. By the way, stay here, I'll be right back."
With that, she hurried out, ignoring Mia's calls.
Lyra was in such a rush because she wanted to share the good news with Jeffery. Half of her success was thanks to him. The notes Jeffery gave her were incredibly helpful. At this moment, Lyra's heart was burning with excitement, and she didn't even notice the strange looks from others.
But as soon as she pushed open the office door, she saw a nurse in a suggestive pose, getting close to Jeffery.
She froze, and the warmth in her heart instantly cooled.
The nurse turned and saw her, showing a panicked expression that seemed somewhat deliberate. She pretended to hide behind him. "Dr. Cole is here. What should I do? She saw us."
"Dr. Cole looks so angry. Is she mad? Will she hit me?"
Lyra's knuckles turned slightly white.
"Sorry, I was being presumptuous..."
Before she could finish, there was a loud "ouch."
The nurse was pushed to the ground.
Not only was the nurse stunned, but Lyra was, too.
Only Jeffery remained cold, his eyes like ice shards, cutting through the nurse. "Don't touch me with unsterilized hands."
The nurse's face turned pale.
His words were basically calling her dirty.
But Jeffery really just had a thing about cleanliness. He couldn't stand people touching him after they'd touched other things. He had a sharp tongue, and his words often caused misunderstandings.
But he wouldn't explain himself.
In fact, he preferred the misunderstanding.
The nurse looked at Lyra, then at Jeffery, and ran off, unable to bear the humiliation.
Lyra stepped aside to avoid being bumped.
"Just now... I thought I was interrupting you," she hesitated.
She had to admit, after Jeffery's reaction, she felt relieved. The suffocating feeling from earlier was gone, and she could breathe easily again. But there was still a lingering bitterness in her chest, making her wonder why the nurse acted that way.
Jeffery glanced at her and explained, "I don't know her. She knocked and came in on her own. Shortly after, you came in."
Lyra's face looked much better. "It might be related to the recent rumors in the hospital."
Jeffery frowned.
He didn't say anything, but he had already decided to deal with the spreading nonsense.
"Did you come to see me for something?"
Lyra nodded. But after the earlier incident, her excitement had cooled down. "I passed. Now I just need to publish my thesis."
Jeffery's frown relaxed, and he showed a warm smile. "Do you know how to write it?"
Lyra shook her head.
He then had her come over and open his computer, showing her his thesis as a reference.
Accidentally brushing his sleeve, she remembered Jeffery's cold attitude towards the nurse and his cleanliness obsession. She had touched many things and hadn't disinfected her hands yet.
She quickly pulled back her hand. "I forgot to disinfect. I'll go do it now..."
"No need for that. Come here, look at this section." Jeffery pulled her hand directly.
Lyra was stunned, being pulled into his chair. From this angle, Jeffery was almost hugging her from behind.
Her heart felt like it was about to leap out of her throat.
So close that she could clearly smell the cool cologne on him. What was the base note? It was heavy, old-fashioned, instantly painting a picture of a steady, reliable man in her mind.
It suited him well.
Jeffery's large hand gently patted her head, reminding her, "Focus, you inattentive student."
Lyra quickly gathered her thoughts, silently chanting to stay calm.
But it was useless.
In the end, Jeffery asked, "Did you understand?"
She turned her face slightly, meeting his deep gaze. His presence enveloped her, and Lyra wanted to ask, understand what?
She hadn't heard a thing.
But facing such a direct gaze, how could she say no? "I... I understood."
A light sigh came from above her head, followed by a gentle tap, a mix of helplessness and a bit of indulgence, like a strict teacher with a favorite student.
"I'll explain again. Pay attention, don't get distracted."
His deep voice was elegant and rich, close to her ear, with an unimaginable impact.
Even dry knowledge, coming from his mouth, seemed to carry a hint of allure.
Lyra used all her self-control.
When she finally let go, her face was flushed, and she kept her head down, not daring to look at him. "I understand. I'll go back and study it carefully!"
