Chapter 905 Illegitimate Child
As Lyra listened, an image of a woman with a child inexplicably flashed through her mind.
But she quickly dismissed it as unlikely.
The next second, Violette leaned in with a conspiratorial whisper, "I didn't believe it at first either. Mr. Gray doesn't seem like that kind of person. But I really saw it!"
Lyra, startled by Violette's excitement, felt her nerves fraying. "Saw what?"
"An illegitimate child."
"Mr. Gray doesn't have an illegitimate child. You must have been mistaken."
Lyra was determined to defend Jeffery's reputation. As far as she knew, he didn't even have a girlfriend, let alone a child.
Seeing Lyra's disbelief, Violette became more insistent, claiming she would show her proof.
Lyra found herself being dragged along.
"Look, over there. I wasn't lying. This morning, I saw that child looking for Mr. Gray. And now there's a woman with him. Who knows, maybe she's Mr. Gray's wife."
Following Violette's pointing finger, Lyra saw someone she recognized.
It was Pearl, the woman she had seen before.
Pearl hadn't noticed her yet.
Violette was already buzzing with excitement. "Everyone's secretly watching them. Aren't you close with Mr. Gray? She's heading to the director's office. Why don't you go ask her?"
Lyra's gaze shifted from the elegant Pearl. "What would I ask? Even if it's true..."
What right did she have to ask?
The thought startled Lyra, but Violette didn't notice. Lyra quickly calmed herself, chiding her wild imagination.
Lyra pulled Violette away.
Seeing Lyra's lack of interest, Violette was puzzled. How could anyone not be curious?
Since Jeffery had joined their hospital, he had always been a mystery, handsome, well-off, and with many secret admirers. Yet, no one had ever heard of him being involved with anyone, let alone having a woman by his side.
"It's so strange. You're really not curious? Do you know something?" Violette pressed.
Lyra sat down, picked up a pen, and kept her head down, hiding her expression. "What could I know? You're all just speculating. I've met her. She's just a friend of Mr. Gray."
Violette got a response, but not the one she wanted, leaving her disappointed.
Lyra had work to do and no time to worry about Violette's disappointment.
But Lyra didn't have to seek out Pearl; Pearl came to her. When Pearl knocked on the door with a smile, Lyra was taken aback. "Ms. Harris?"
Pearl entered with Christopher, her demeanor graceful. Even the simple act of sitting down was done with elegance.
With a warm smile, Pearl said, "Sorry to bother you. I was looking for Mr. Gray, but he wasn't here. I don't know anyone else here, so I thought I'd come to you."
Hearing the slight apology in Pearl's voice, Lyra felt uneasy. "It's no trouble. As Mr. Gray's friend, you should be welcomed."
But she had nothing to offer as hospitality. The hospital had no coffee, and all she had were two leftover oranges. She awkwardly held them, unsure of what to do.
"Can I have one of those oranges?" Christopher asked, saving her from the dilemma.
Lyra sighed in relief, grateful for the timely intervention. She didn't consider that Christopher might be intentionally helping her out, as he was just a child.
But Christopher was indeed that clever.
Pearl watched Christopher take the orange, gently ruffling his hair. "You always want snacks. We're not here to find food."
Lyra quickly waved her hand dismissively. "It's fine, really."
The atmosphere grew quiet.
Pearl, with her serene demeanor, seemed like the embodiment of autumn leaves—calm and gentle.
Lyra, sitting across from her, felt increasingly self-conscious in the presence of someone so effortlessly poised.
She lowered her head. "I'm sorry, I should have prepared something for your visit. Let me go out and buy something."
Pearl stopped her with a gentle tone. "No need. I just came to see a friend."
After that, Pearl seemed at a loss for words.
Lyra, with her eyes downcast, subtly observed Pearl, her fingers twisting nervously.
Unbeknownst to Lyra, Pearl was also observing her closely, though her gaze was discreet.
Pearl's smile grew warmer.
Lyra felt inadequate.
But Pearl thought Lyra was lovely—beautiful and kind.
She had heard about the recent events at the hospital. It wasn't that Pearl was nosy, but Jeffery's actions had caused quite a stir. He had asked Oscar to help manage the situation and clear things up, making it hard for her not to know.
Pearl quickly typed on her phone, her actions hidden under the table. "Actually, I wanted to meet you out of personal curiosity."
"Me?" Lyra was surprised.
They had no real connection. Why would Pearl want to meet her?
Lyra grew nervous.
Pearl seemed to sense her anxiety and smiled, glancing at the group chat messages she had stirred up. "Don't be nervous. I'm just curious about you. We all care about Jeffery, but you know how he is."
Pearl shrugged.
Lyra relaxed a bit, her shoulders easing. "Mr. Gray isn't very talkative."
"But he's a good person. He'd be happy to know he has friends like you who care about him."
As soon as she said it, Lyra regretted it. This was between Jeffery and his friends. Was it her place to comment?
Lyra's thoughts were written all over her face, making it hard for anyone to miss.
Perhaps it was this straightforwardness that had touched Jeffery, making him, a typically aloof and proud person, open up to Oscar and his friends.
Pearl smiled knowingly. "Now I understand why he was willing to ask Oscar for help because of you."
Lyra looked puzzled.
Before she could ask, Pearl stood up, taking Christopher, who still had half an orange. She took the remaining half from him, raising an eyebrow. "What, I can't have an orange?"
